Law guarantees freedom of religious belief in China. Normal activities of different religions can be carried out in China according to their rights prescribed by the Constitution and Law. Buddhism and Taoism (Daoism) are comparatively widespread in China. There are more than 100 million religious followers in China, more than 85,000 places of worship, and 3,000 religious communities with 30,000 clergy to serve the spiritual needs of their followers. Of the top five religions, Buddhism, the most influential, has a history of more than 2,000 years in China. There are now over 9,500 Buddhist temples and monasteries with 200,000 monks and nuns registered at temples throughout China. Taoism, native to the country, has a history of more than 1,700 years. There are over 6,000 Taoist priests and nuns who live in the temples, with more than 600 temples and monasteries open to the public. Islam was introduced to China in the seventh century. There are about 20 million Muslims and more than 35,000 mosques. Catholicism and Protestantism boomed in China with the Opium War in the 1840s. There are about 4 million Catholics, including 2,700 clergymen, and 4,000 Catholic churches, about 10 million Christians or Protestants, including 18,000 missionaries, 8,000 churches and 20,000 simply equipped meeting places in China. China now has 2,000 religious social organizations and 48 religious schools and colleges. All religious organizations operate their own affairs independently, run seminaries to suit their own needs, publish their classical works and other publications and have service organs to serve public interest. Religious scriptures, books and magazines are published by various religions. China's Constitution stipulates that the state protects normal religious activities. No one may make use of religion to engage in activities that disrupt public order, impair the health of citizens or interfere with the educational system of the state. In order to ensure that Chinese citizens really enjoy the freedom of religious belief, religious bodies and religious affairs are not subject to any foreign domination. President Jiang Zeming said at a three-day national work conference on the subject, which ended on December 12, 2001. China will effectively implement the policy of "freedom for religious belief" and conduct religious work according to law. Religious work enjoys an important status in the country's affairs. Under the new situation, the Party's leadership over religion should be strengthened The work on religion is closely linked with the comity between different ethnic groups, social stability, national security and reunification, as well as China's relations with foreign countries. The influence of religion on political and social lives in today's world should never be underestimated. Communist Party members do not believe in any religion but treat religion with a scientific point of view. Freedom for religious belief is a basic right enjoyed by all citizens according to the Chinese Constitution, and to respect and protect such a right embodies the Party's commitment to protect human rights. On the one hand, each person enjoys the freedom of believing or not believing in religion, while on the other; religious work should be conducted within the scope of the Constitution and Laws. Religious works should not obstruct social work, working order and living order. Any religion is not allowed to interfere in the country's administrative, judicial and educational works. Religion should never be allowed to be used for opposing the Party leadership and socialist system, destroying national reunification and ethnic unity, as well as harming national interests. Religious people should love their country, support the socialist system and Party leadership, and obey the country's laws. China adopts the principle of separating politics from religions, stressing no religion has the right to override the Constitution and laws. The principle of independence must be followed and foreign interference in China's religious work should be absolutely prohibited. This news from Xinhua on the Chinese gold-medal winning women's quad kept me captivated. I thought I would share. It feels like it should be presented in a big, heavy-paged fairy tale book. With gilt-edges and illuminated pages. Partly it's the poetic way the two languages meet, and partly it's the fatefulness of each person's place in life that comes across, as opposed to the individual drive of will and zeal that you get from American athletes (or reporters).

European demand supports Lenovo

Chinese PC maker Lenovo has reported upbeat quarterly profits as it improved market share in Europe. The firm, which is one of the official partners for the Beijing Olympics, said net income grew 65% to $110.5m (£56.8m) in the three months to June. Sales rose 10.5% to $4.2bn, with sales in Greater China up 22% to $1.7bn, while sales in the Americas fell 4.8%. The firm saw sales in Europe, the Middle East and Africa rise to $904m from $755m the year before. Broad-based growth "Lenovo is growing across geographies and product lines, continuing to bolster its already strong position in both developed markets and the fast-growing emerging markets," said Chairman Yang Yuanqing. Best known for its Thinkpad slim-line computers, it said demand for these type of laptops continued to be the largest contributor to total sales. Lenovo is the fourth biggest computer manufacturer in the world behind Taiwanese computer firm Acer and Hewlett Packard and Dell of the US. It established itself as a global player in 2005 when it bought IBM's PC operations.

Christina is in Minnesota doing the same. Its hard being away from her. I've decided I very much do not like it. But how can I be blue when I've moved back in with my wonderful parents . . . my . . . my wonderful . . . oh-so wonderful . . . puuuuuh . . .OK, so it has been difficult. I'm not the most patient person when I'm around my parents. It's just . . . good lord do I not want to live with them anymore! I enter their house, and once again I'm in high school. I suppose that's how it goes with most parents, right? Guuuuuh.An upside is they hadn't seen The Dark Knight, so I got to see it with them, bringing my total viewings to 三。 <-- that would be "san1," or three in Mandarin. Oh yeah. I've been rockin' the Chinese lessons. Though I'm fairly useless when it comes to the doodles. I would be lying if I didn't say I had to look that one up. Doodles, though. Seriously, China? What kind of a country develops thousands and thousands of doodles instead of a much smaller number of letters? Maybe it's the bull-headed American culture talking, but letters are clearly the better way to go. Friggin' doodles. And it's not like China doesn't know about letters now. Yet they insist on the doodles. Sigh . . .That was, of course, sarcasm for any Chinese official who might be reading. I greatly respect China's rich and wonderful culture and all of their . . . doodley goodness . . . yay, China (can I have a visa now, please?)!

As I write these lines, somewhere in US Bush and Co are giving final touches to intended action plan against Iran . Indicators are that US is very much likely to go ahead with it’s plans within forty or fifty days from now.

Extraordinary and impressive preparations have been made for it which include strategic positioning of US forces in and around gulf and successful placing of pro US governments in countries like Germany, France and Italy (CIA, MI-8 and Mossad must have worked over time to achieve this) Additionally the strategic petroleum reserve of US has been beefed up to last for at least three years in the event of a disruption of oil supplies. Needless to point out the horrendous impact of this enormous oil buying spree of USA on world economy. Are US’ European allies also busy storing the precious commodity for that rainy day? Sure they are.

What exactly will USA’s action against Iran be like? Will it be confined to bombing of the nuclear facilities and infrastructure alone or it will also commit it’s ground troops? In the first case US will obviously attempt to bomb Iran back to the Stone Age, causing obvious disruption to oil supplies to the countries like China in particular and Europe in general. This may well be a brief campaign spread over a couple of months. In the second case (though it seems less likely) committing ground troops will essentially mean a forced regime change and physical occupation of Iran’s oil facilities (as in case of Iraq) leading to a consolidation of US’ position in the region that will actually mean presence of US (or so called NATO forces) in Iran for a long time in future.

But why act against Iran at this point of time? Reasons are few but clear. One, Iran ’s becoming a symbol of defiance against US in the Muslim world is unacceptable to Zionist world. In this role Iran actually appears to have taken over the traditional role of Muslim World’s leadership from Saudi Arabia . Therefore like Libya and Iraq, Iran must also face the menace and be punished well and proper. Two, by only targeting Iran, USA aims to achieve other strategic benefits in context to China, Asia and Middle East . And since Obama almost surely destined to win the presidential campaign, is understood to be against the plan against Iran, Bush is hell bent on fulfilling it’s commitment to Israel (and the Zionist world) before departure from white house.

One may wonder as to what can be likely reaction of China . So far Chinese leadership has resolved to confine themselves to the development of Chinese economy and look the other way when it comes to US’ adventurism. Of late it has however been visibly busy adopting measures to secure the long stretching sea lanes that remain vital for it’s ever increasing oil supplies. How far can it tolerate a direct impact on oil supplies caused by a US action against Iran remains to be seen. However an underestimation of a likely reaction by China may prove to be a very serious mistake on part of USA .

What does it all implicate for Pakistan who is already bleeding and struggling to survive in the post 9/11 times? Just the other day Mike Mullar was here. One can safely assume what guarantees and support he may have been seeking from Pakistan besides the usual absurdity covering the so called “war on terror. “

Needless to mention the advance elements already placed in Pakistan like Helliburton, G4S and an assemblage of various NGOs that remain poised to take on an active role and keenly support US forces when time comes. These are the elements that will eventually host and facilitate launching of operations of companies like Blackwater.

An action against Iran is going to translate into compounding of Pakistan ’s wows in many ways. Rebellious Baloch Sardars are likely to be more active after discovering a larger playfield as they may be eyeing the parts of Balochistan in Iran and Afghanistan too. There will be a sure upsurge in activities of BLA and Jandullah who are already being actively supported by CIA for ulterior motives. Turmoil in NWFP is already risen way up the red marker.

In fact in the aftermath of bombing of Iran, USA is likely to create conditions that may facilitate a compromise of Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal no matter what assurances Musharraf and clan give on the supposedly flawless command and control system deployed by army.

A matter of great concern is the now sure infiltration of CIA (and it’s allied agencies) into ISI that is virtually crippling it’s work in NWFP and Balochistan in particular.

With Pak Army at the advance stage of decay where it’s top brass remains busy in happy golfing and duck shooting, a corrupt bureaucracy, intellectually and morally bankrupt politicians and hapless and miserable masses…there remains almost no room for hope.

Question is where will it all stop?

USA is a hog gone berserk who will eventually meet it’s end sometime not in a very distant future. How far it will succeed in ravaging the country after country in the Muslim world cannot be said for sure because it is not likely to stop after complete destruction of Iran or even Pakistan. Countries like Malaysia and Indonesia and Saudi Arabia lie further up it’s path.

Muslim world has no choice in the face of this nuisance but fight back. To survive it must resist the ugly monster or perish. At the end of the day it’s the sons of soil, the poorest of poor, the oppressed and the beleaguered the likes of Taliban, that will take up the final fight and do the job,for it’s from the ashes and despair, a new flame of potent resistance will finally appear that will consume this menace called USA.

The European Union's top trade official said Tuesday he would "push back hard" against a global trade deal that would give China more time to shield its economy from foreign imports. A draft World Trade Organization agreement would offer China up to 15 years before it had to obey all trade liberalization rules. EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson told the European Parliament's trade committee that an additional grace period for China to cut tariffs and allow more foreign competition went too far. "I cannot support such wide flexibilities for China as a newly acceded WTO member. We will push back hard on this," he said.China was offered special treatment because it only joined the WTO in 2001. So I really dropped the ball on posting last week, didn't I? I blame school, and to a lesser extent society. Four more weeks to go before I'm outta here!Speaking of outta here, it is official. Christina and I have signed and mailed the contracts--we have a job in China! We'll be teaching at Anyang Normal University (nice to be normal) in the city of Anyang in the Henan Province. We need to be there by the middle of August. Our correspondent, Marvin, tells us we will have a newly renovated four-bedroom apartment waiting for us. Yay! He also apologized because Anyang is such a small city. The metropolitan area only has five million people in it . . .Speaking of fiction writing (hmmm, not as smooth), my story, "Dick and Jane: A Love Story" (found in the sidebar) was workshopped in my fiction writing class last last Thursday. You may remember me wondering how my professor would respond to it. Well, now I know. He, in a word, didn't. Yes. No comments. All he did was tell the class that whenever he reads a story with metafictional elements he feels like he doesn't have the vocabulary to talk about it. So he doesn't. Part of me can respect that, but then another, much larger, part of me wants to grab him by his writing utensil and yell, "Your the damn teacher--find a way to talk about it!" . . . I'm working through it. Actually, I set up a meeting with him this Tuesday to make him talk about it. 'Cause that's how I roll.Speaking of rolling on and on with no clear end in sight while the entire country wants to pull its collective hair out and making the hurting finally stop . . . Hilary is still in the race! Y- . . . yaaaaay . . . ! But she's not actually who I want to talk about. John McCain was recently on the Daily Show, and a few things he said really gave me pause. The first thing was how he spoke about Hamas. Jon brought up a comment that he made, saying that Hamas endorsed Barack Obama. Whether or not he was taking out of context, whatever a Hamas endorsement would mean, it was what he said next that really stopped me. He called them a "transcendent evil" who want "to destroy everything we believe in." Now . . . I was under the impression that Hamas was a Palestinian resistance group fighting against their perceived occupation by Israel, which is continually supported by us. I didn't realize that they aren't really people, they're just an abstract evil that needs to be destroyed. That's cool, whatever. He continues, saying, "I think they think that I'm their worst nightmare," something that he is proud of, and I wondered what kind of appeal he was trying to make by playing off xenophobic, anti-diplomatic, sentiments in the American people . . . Don't we want peace in the Middle East? Maybe the ability to respectfully address one another and come to a resolution that fosters harmony between two suffering peoples? Maybe I was wrong again . . . The second thing that got me was when Jon Stewart suggested a running mate for him. Hilary Clinton. After he overcame his shock, Johnny-boy stuttered that that was something that he had never considered before, but I thought wouldn't that kinda be awesome? What would be a stronger show of bipartisanship than taking someone from the other side as your running mate? It reminded me of the early presidencies, when the vice presidency was given to the runner-up. Have we fallen so far from a common ground that that notion is seen as both ludicrous and disastrous?Speaking of disastrous, Myanmar sure is turning out to be a shithole, ain't it?That's all for now. China will transfer $9 billion in pensions to selected fund managers

Last Thursday the Chinese Labor Ministry confirm will transfer more than $9.1 billion in company pension plans to selected fund managers by the end of this year. China's market for enterprise annuities, as the plans are known, is expected to grow by 30 billion to 50 billion yuan, or $3.9 billion to $6.5 billion, in 2007.

According with labor authorities China's company pensions market was valued at about 90 billion yuan at the end of last year, of which 20 billion yuan has already been transferred to fund managers. All company pension plans rolled out in the future will be handled by fund professionals.

China allows 37 firms to handle these funds. Of these, four are joint-venture fund houses, according to a KPMG-Reuters research report. These include Harvest Fund Management, 19.5 percent owned by Deutsche Bank, and China Merchants Fund Management, in which ING holds 30 percent. The government will also gradually expand the scope for insurers to invest directly in stocks, confirm the responsible of the insurance regulator, China Insurance Regulatory Commission.

China is allowing pension funds and insurers greater access to stocks to help boost returns as it dismantles the nation's cradle-to-grave welfare system. The benchmark CSI 300 Index gained 121 percent last year.

Preparations are under way to lift a ceiling that limits insurers' direct investment in the stock market to 5 percent of assets, and progress will be made according to the needs of insurance firms. China also bans investments by insurance firms in stocks that have more than doubled in the previous 12 months. There are no current plans to remove this restriction.

1.24m Chinese grads can't find major-related jobs

About 1.24 million Chinese college graduates have failed to land jobs that require their qualifications upon graduation this year, the county's top labour official said.

A total of 4.13 million students graduated from higher education institutions this year, 750,000 more than last year, as the country enters its ninth year of expanding college enrolment.

Tian Chengping, minister of labour and social security, said on Thursday (Nov 23) he estimates about 70 per cent of college graduates have been employed since graduation, according to the China Youth Daily.

He said the central government has set up an inter-ministerial joint team, including the Ministry of Education, to help address employment problems.

Meanwhile, the Labour and Social Security Ministry has established a mechanism to provide guidance and training for unemployed graduates, the minister said.

Only 22 per cent of China's new jobs last year were for college graduates, estimates a ministry study of 114 urban labour markets.

Tian said the country should create more jobs in the process of economic development and urged college graduates to work in grassroots units and undeveloped areas where they are most needed.

China's official registered unemployment rate stood at 4.1 per cent in the first nine months of 2006.

The demand for college graduates was down 22 per cent in 24 provinces and 15 major cities from last year, said a report issued by the Ministry of Personnel in March.

A survey showed 52.14 per cent of bachelor degree holders considered lack of experience as the biggest obstacle in finding work.

Colleges and universities should organize internships to prepare students for employment, said Lin Zeyan, a researcher with the Development Research Centre of the State Council at a forum this month.

The country needs to develop its service sector and promote small and medium-sized enterprises to create more jobs, said Mo Rong, deputy chief of the Labour Science Research Institute.

Crisis boosts U.S.-China ties

North Korea's nuclear test Oct. 9 may have created a crisis atmosphere in the world but, at the same time, it has greatly improved China's relations with the United States as the two countries work closely together to put pressure on Pyongyang to give up its nuclear-arms program.

This new situation is recognized by both Washington and Beijing. U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on a swing through Japan, South Korea, China and Russia - which along with the U.S. and North Korea make up the countries taking part in the "six-party talks" - that some developments suggest that Beijing was becoming more of a partner on issues important to Washington.

Christopher Hill, the assistant secretary of state for East Asia responsible for the North Korea talks, said at a forum in Washington that the two countries have "really come closer together as a result of this terrible provocation by the North Koreans."

"So perhaps someday in the history books, Kim Jong Il will get a lot of credit for bringing the U.S. and China closer together," he added facetiously.

Both Rice and Hill have underlined the significance of China actually joining the other 14 members of the United Nations Security Council to denounce North Korea, its erstwhile ally.

"Not bad for a couple of years' work," Rice said, apparently referring to the time Washington and Beijing had spent working together on the North Korean nuclear issue.

China, too, recognizes its increased importance to the U.S. When President Hu Jintao received Rice last Friday, he said her visit showed "that U.S. President George (W.) Bush and the U.S. government attach great importance to U.S.- China relations."

Actually, the North Korean nuclear issue has provided a geostrategic rationale for the Chinese-American relationship for the last few years, ever since Beijing became both mediator and host in the international talks to get Pyongyang to end its nuclear-weapons program. Such a rationale had been largely missing since the end of the Cold War and the disintegration of the Soviet Union.

China and North Korea were allies during the Korean War in the 1950s against the Union States and South Korea. The two are still technically allies, since a treaty of friendship signed in 1961 obligates each to go to the assistance of the other if one of them should come under military attack from a third country.

Now, though, the rift between the two is palpable, with Beijing joining the U.S. and the other members of the U.N. Security Council twice in three months in voting for a resolution denouncing North Korea.

While the North Korean media has not criticized China by name, some recent articles clearly were directed at Beijing. Reserving most of its venom for the U.S., Pyongyang has denounced all the other members of the Security Council - including China - for supporting the resolution.

According to a North Korean spokesman, the resolution "cannot be construed otherwise than a declaration of war" against Pyongyang and was intended to "destroy the socialist system" in the country. Such a charge would be especially hurtful to China, which still considers itself a socialist country.

In fact, the day after the resolution was adopted, the Korean Central News Agency publicized a signed article in the official newspaper Rodong Sinmun that called for the maintenance of "revolutionary principles."

To shrink back from revolutionary principles, it said, "means surrender and ruin" and would ultimately lead to "subordination and slavery."

"This has been proved by the situation of some countries," it said. "Those countries that were building socialism in the past deviated from the revolutionary principles with no faith in socialism when facing difficulties and ordeals. And they were afraid of the threat and blackmail by the imperialists and yielded to them."

These words seem a clear allusion to China, which after the death of Chairman Mao Zedong gave up class struggle and embraced capitalist principles, even though China insists it has not abandoned socialism and is merely employing the market economy as a tool.

China's growing closeness to the U.S. is likely to lead to increased trust, which will help resolve other problems. If there was doubt in Washington before about China's attitude to a fellow Communist country, that has no doubt been laid to rest.

The rift with North Korea is not likely to heal in the near term. The days when China described its relationship with North Korea as being as close as that between lips and teeth are gone forever.

Today’s article in the FT revives an ongoing debate around transparency and accuracy in China. Anyone, who has had to analyze a Chinese company or industry, as I have, know exactly what I am referring to. It is a fastidious work to reconcile data and build a true picture of a company. State owned enterprises (SOEs) are not yet familiar with reporting or organizational structure for that matter and thus find it hard to present coherent financial data. When it comes to “private” Chinese companies, a little digging will reveal that most of the time, they are not as private as one would expect with the major shareholder being the local government authority or the military…

So, how can you realize a reliable analysis that can serve as a basis for strategic decisions such as in the case of due diligence, supplier/client trustworthiness, competitors’ analysis, or industry analysis? First, you will need to have multiple sources that you have to qualify and rank. Understanding how the data is compiled is key in any research but even more so here. Then you need to crosscheck the data against each other. Finally, use the discrepancies that have unveiled as an angle in your one-to-one interview with the key players. It may take more than one attempt to clarify some dark areas. Of course, having some 关系(guanxi) will ease the process a little but in the end, you need to have an incredibly investigative and analytical mind to see past the smoke screen.

Thank you for your thoughtful comments. My point is not that the US will work against China per se, but work with like minded countries (not pawns... I think I clearly attempted to list each nation's self interested reason for cooperating with the US position) to contain China from acting out aggressively towards Taiwan. Through this manner and engagement with China diplomatically we can wait out the clock for a more free China.

Just as Japan was able to strike quickly at Pearl Harbor, China may be able to strike quickly against Taiwan, but like Japan circa 1941, China does not have the access to oil and the ability to hold off a militarily superior United States.

The problem goes beyond oil -- like Imperial Japan, Communist China does not have access to the outside world in a conventional war with the United States. The US Navy and US Air Force would be able to quickly shut down Chinese lines of communications to almost everywhere. Assuming both sides has the resolve to accept the military loses and the responsibility not to use conventional weapons, the situation would quickly deadlock in a stalemate militarily advantageous to the United States (China having a huge army..... in China).

On the mainland the People's Liberation Army is militarily undefeatible, even with a total blockade.

Such an extended conventional war is unlikely with Beijing, but (barely) possible.

While the United States did help promote democracy during the Cold War, it did not do so with the passion and energy our nation needs to now pursue it. The Cold War was about pragmatic compromises, supporting unsavory dictators as well, especially in the Middle East, to keep countries in the US sphere rather than the Communist sphere.

In a post Cold War world, where different ideologies dominate the world debate, the old paradigm of working with unsavory nations cannot continue to ensure US security.

Between the Cold War to Globalization era, America switched from a negative to a positive foreign policy. As I blogged earlier

The Soviets were attempting to connect as much of the globe as they could to their command-and-control economy. For them this was a future worth creating. Reagan didn't have a future worth creating. He saw a future worth destroying. We sought to disconnect every state the Soviets connected, and we succeeded.

Bush, with Clinton's help, switched America from being anti-Communist to pro-Open-Society. There were just as many ideologies during the Cold War, but our relative weakness, our main enemy's strength, meant we focused on his destruction.

If the US fails to defend a democratic Taiwan from China then it destroys any credibility won in the War on Terror with other nations. If we fail Taiwan what is our response to Iraq, Afghanistan, Israel, Ukraine, Japan, Australia, our European allies, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and many other nations that depend on American security?

While China may be a problem for the United States, it is not a threat to globalization itself. China's future worth creating is a lot like ours, only with differente emphases. bin Laden's hopeful future is a nightmare. China is a developing authoritarian state that is slowly opening up. It would be possible to America to abandon Taiwan and maintain momentum in the Global War on Terrorism. We could make a trade with Beijing for abandoning Taiwan, and structre the trade to keep up the forward momentum.

It would be unwise, but it possible. Our response to Saudi Arabia and others would be "China is not good but getting better, you are terrible and getting worse."

Additionally, allowing China to take Taiwan by force would automatically make the 21st Century a Chinese Century, as the ability for the US to promote and defend global security would crumble. Any century that has a non-free government as the apex of the international order will not be a century of peace, economic development and the expansion of liberty.

A historical analogy is useful. Would the 20th century have been better or worse if the Britain did not intervene to save Belgium? We would have had a authoritarian-Germany-dominated trade-oriented Europe. Berlin would have torn Russia apart, crushed the terrorist states in the Balkans, isolated Paris, and probably back democracy in Belgium significantly. Instead, London saved Brussels and we got Lennin, Stalin, and Hitler for our troubles.

China is "good enough" to be the major player in Greater East Asia. It's not the future I want, but it's not necessarily bad.

Elsewhere in your post you mention that China's strategy may be to make a quick negotiated settlement favorable to Beijing. If that happens it is important that we will have thought about the consequences clearly.

Because of Japan's fears of a rising Chinese dragon, they have extended their military relationship with the US to include defending Taiwan. If war was to break out in the Taiwanese Strait, the economic engine of Asia and possibly the world would grind to a halt. It is in Japan's long term political, national security and economic interests to work with the United States in providing a proper deterrent to China. It is encouraging that Japan has boldly taken this step

Good point. Assuming a conventional naval start, international sea lanes would quickly be taken by America with China's navy destroyed. America would be dictating when and where trade continues and resumes. While mercantile cowardess leads nations to favor peace at almost any cost, American force rebalances the equation in favor of our interests.

While a popular Indian worry about any future US arms deal would be the possibility of another arms embargo, as happened with India and Pakistan over the 1996 nuclear testing. This scenario is unlikely to repeat itself, because the US strategically needs New Dehli and New Dehli is not likely to start a war with Pakistan.

Kind-of related, especially where Taiwan is concerned. North Vietnam invaded the South in 1972, and lost. America's left-dominated Congress then imposed a de-facto arms embargo on Saigon, and two yeras later Hanoi easily won. Beacuse of the influence of a small but powerful left, America has won a reputation for perfidity. India (and Taiwan) are both taking this into account.

The United States along with democratic countries in Eastern Asia have an opportunity to build a constructive alliance to deter China from seeking its goals militarily, but they must act now and wait for an emerging dragon to reform democratically.

I am now just back from China. I visited Beijing and its neighboring cities.

Beijing was beautiful. I visited Forbidden city where last emperor lived, The great wall that was built thousands of years ago. I saw cute pandas.

Chinese people were so kind to me. I could never imagine in the past the two nations fought each other.

What was surprising to me is although China is known as communist nation, there were many capitalistic American things in the city. I saw KFC, McDonald, and HBO.

I will be flying to China!!

Because New Year Holidays HAS to be 7 days, but we only get 3 days off SO we have to work this weekend and get the days back on 14th and 15th. This basically sucks. Would be better to get the weekend off and then 5 days of holiday. Coz nothing will happening at work this weekend anyway, all our customers who have their own business are already gone.But now it's six o'clock and I'm off work.
