It’s hard to be a single mom dating because you’re not only on the lookout...

It’s hard to be a single mom dating because you’re not only on the lookout for the perfect man for you but for your kids as well. You don’t let your child(ren) dictate who you see of course, but you can’t just forget that they exist and opt to marry someone who does not accept them with open arms or vice versa. When it comes to a child, you need to be sensitive to their feelings and know that a new man in your lives means they need some time to adjust. Luckily, children are a lot more resilient and adaptable and accepting than adults. What happens if your man does not accept your child(ren)? I know this is tough, especially if you’ve fallen in love with someone, but when it comes to your flesh and blood; there is no room to be with a man who cannot accept them. They are a part of you! If he doesn’t accept and love your children then he is not really capable of loving you completely either since they are an extension of you. It’s understandable that a man may need a little time to warm up to your child(ren) and bond, especially if he was not a kid-person to begin with. A man who is willing to accept and work at bonding even though it will take some time is definitely worth keeping. On the other hand, a man who is not accepting can’t be bothered to make the effort to try and refuses to see them as a part of you; this is not a man that you should be with. As a mother, you have a responsibility to make the best choices that you can for your children and by choosing to be with a man who doesn’t accept them and prefers to treat them as though they don’t exist; you are not being a good mother.Staying with a man who doesn’t like or accept your kid(s) is asking for trouble because they will forever feel that they were second. Your child should never be made to feel second to anyone at all; let alone a man who came into the picture after they were already born! The affect that this can have on a child is devastating and not something that will ever really go away. And if you think that by going ahead with the relationship that they will eventually learn to love each other the way you want them to; you’re in for a rude awakening. If it comes down to man who won’t accept and just doesn’t like your kid(s); then you need to move on. It’s unconditional love that you should be striving for and that’s not what you’re getting if you are with a man who won’t accept your children and care for them. They are a part of you, so to truly love you means truly accepting them. This is another reason why it’s important to tell a man about your children as soon as you can; cuz there’s no sense in getting attached to someone who will not want all of you as a package in the end.Check out the Single Moms Dating Guide to Catching the Man of Your Dreams in 30 Days

As single moms dating, we need to be careful of the men that we bring around our children and as pessimistic or even morbid as that may sound; we have a responsibility to protect our children and need to do that to the best of our ability. We want to believe that we have great judgment and can tell a good apple from a bad one, but we’re only human and we can find ourselves misled by sweet talkin’ men who give good game and know what to say to get us to let our guard down. If you look at some of the most notorious criminals throughout history; many of them were sweet-faced, charismatic charmers who seemed to be well spoken and all around good guys; yet capable of rape, murder and other heinous acts. These are not men that we want to waste a moment thinking of, but they are the ones that we need to learn from so that we can keep ourselves and our children safe.Learning to listen to our gut instinct can make a huge difference in the type of men that we end up with and ultimately bring around our kids. Your gut instinct is a sign that something is off and you need to learn to trust it as opposed to brushing it off as being paranoid or a reaction to having been hurt in the past. It can save you a lot of suffering if you learn to place more trust in your own instincts.Regardless of how great your new boyfriend may seem, you should consider the fact that all you know about him is what he has told you. Unless you’re dating a man who is related to a good friend or has been a family acquaintance for years; you need to do a little digging to make sure that he is on the up and up before you bring him home to meet your kids or even trust him alone with your kids. I know that this isn’t quite as romantic as you dream of when thinking of meeting Mr. Right, but it is necessary.Paying attention to how he interacts with others can give you a lot of insight into what he’s about, especially when he thinks that no one is looking. Take any opportunity you can to meet his friends and family and encourage conversations about his upbringing and past so that you can look for any red flags. And finally, it’s worth investing a few bucks to do a background check if you’re getting serious enough that it’s time to bring him home to your precious child(ren).A little caution will go a long way in protecting your children and your peace of mind.

Shay Your Date Diva is the Author and Creator of "Single Moms Dating Guide to Catching the Man of Your Dreams in 30 Days!" www.singlemomsdatingguide.comThis is going to get me a lot of strange looks and comments, but I think you should avoid bringing your man around your kids until you have received a solid commitment from him which I don’t believe is possible in less than a year. You can introduce them when you are certain that the relationship is headed towards marriage and don’t bring him around regularly until you have received a pledge of commitment in the way of a ring/proposal, whatever.I’ve also touched on the subject of checking him out thoroughly before bringing him around your kids, using any method that you can; from talking with his family, coworkers and exes to even doing a background check on him. I’m not saying this needs to be done before they ever meet, but you shouldn’t be bringing just anyone around your kids in the first place and don’t even consider leaving him alone with them until you’ve had him checked inside-out!Bringing a man home to meet the family is a huge deal and even more so when it’s your child(ren). There are feelings and certain reservations that they will have when it comes to the mere idea of their mom dating someone, but it really hits home when they see it first hand and are able to put a face to the boyfriend, who in their eyes, may seem as though is trying to take their mommy away. You need to be sensitive from day one when it comes to your child(ren)’s feelings and deal with things with as much caution as possible. It’s your responsibility to protect them from everything whether unnecessary discomfort associated with your love life to the dangers of jumping too soon and trusting the wrong men around them.If you’ve met a man that makes your heart jump and makes you feel alive and better than you dreamed possible after your last heartache; it can be easy to give into the temptation to introduce him to your loved ones right away. And when it comes to finally having sex with a real live flesh and blood man instead of your Rabbit vibrator; your hormones may make it even harder to resist bringing him home, but get a good babysitter and check into a nice hotel, but don’t bring him home until things are truly solid. Trust me on this one.

When you’re a single mom, dating can seem daunting as it is, but things can...

When you’re a single mom, dating can seem daunting as it is, but things can get really complicated when it’s time to bring the child(ren) and the dating together. Introducing your kids to just anyone you date is an absolute no-no as far as I’m concerned. You certainly don’t need to rush into that and let your child bond with someone before you’re sure that he will stick around, but when you do find Mr. Right, you need to figure out how to help them bond so they can grow to love each other as much as you love them. If you check out my book, Single Moms Guide to Catching the Man of Her Dreams in 30 Days, you’ll hear my story and see that I can truly relate. The pressure on a single mom when she dates is far greater than it is on a non-mom, because she doesn’t only have to work on her relationship with her man but also with her children AND work on them all combined! She’s the matchmaker, the peacemaker and the referee! Taking the time to bring your man and child(ren) together slowly will help things go smoothly. Here are some ways to help your man and child(ren) bond.1.Start of with simply talking to each one about the other. Let your kid(s) know how wonderful your new man is and how happy he makes you. Play up the qualities that matter most to a child: he’s fun, he likes video games, he can’t wait to meet, etc. You’ve likely already been singing your kid(s) praises since you met as all moms do!2.Make the first meeting a quick one just to break the ice and help them put a face to the name.3.Plan the first family date away from your home. You don’t want the kids to feel as though there is a stranger trying to get into the home that they’ve grown accustomed to that doesn’t include a man; they likely already feel this way a little. Instead, plan a fun kid-friendly afternoon out somewhere like an arcade or amusement park where they can play together and let loose.4.Don’t force feed your man and child(ren) on each other. Keep your ‘family dates’ spaced out to give everyone time to ease into things.5.Plan some sort of family date that involves working on something together; maybe an afternoon of painting a pretty picture for the house? Having them work on something and rely on your new man will help them to build trust which is key.Helping your man and child(ren) bond just requires some love and patience. You need to gage things based on how they are all reacting to this new situation and also based on what type of history you’re dealing with. If a child has felt let down by a man in the past or if you’ve just gone through a very rough divorce; you’ll need to take things very slowly. If he really loves you then he will love your children since they are a part of you and the kids will warm up as they see first hand how happy this man makes their mom.

So sad to hear about the quake in China. This news that I've read really touches my heart because most of the victims were children...

Tiny Bodies in a Morgue, and Grief in China

By JIM YARDLEY

Published: May 15, 2008

JUYUAN, China — The bodies are everywhere. Some are zipped inside white vinyl bags and strewn on the floor. Others have been covered in a favorite blanket or dressed in new clothes. There are so many bodies that undertakers want to cremate them in groups. They are all children.

“Our grief is incomparable,” said Li Ping, 39, eyes rimmed red, as he and his wife slowly, carefully pulled a pair of pink pajamas over the bruised, naked body of their 8-year-old daughter, Ke. “We got married late, and had a child late. She is our only child.”

The earthquake that struck Sichuan Province on Monday has so far claimed more than 19,000 lives across China, and thousands more people remain missing or trapped beneath rubble. But the awful scene at this local morgue is a sad reminder that too many of the dead are children in a country where most families are allowed to have only one.

These children symbolized the earthquake’s seemingly indiscriminate cruelty. But the cruelty, in the eyes of their parents, was also man-made.

Several schools in nearby Dujiangyan collapsed while classes were under way. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Wen Jiabao visited two of them, including Xinjian Primary School, where parents say officials told him the death toll was 20 pupils.

“I am Grandpa Wen Jiabao,” the prime minister said as he watched two children being pulled from the rubble, according to Xinhua, the official state news agency. “Hold on, kids! You’ll definitely be rescued.”

But enraged parents interviewed at the morgue on Wednesday afternoon and early Thursday morning say local officials lied to the prime minister to hide the true toll at Xinjian, which they estimate at more than 400 dead children. Several parents blamed local officials for a slow initial rescue response and questioned the structural safety of the school building. They were also furious that officials forbade them to search for their children for two days and then allowed access to the bodies only after the parents formed an ad hoc committee to complain.

“Before Wen Jiabao came, the whole school was filled with children’s bodies,” said one mother who sat outdoors at the morgue with her husband in the early morning darkness beside the covered body of their 8-year-old daughter. “Her father and I had stood outside the school since the earthquake. We pleaded with the government: ‘If she is dead, I want to see the body. If she is alive, I want to see her.’ ”

Her husband, a thin man, leaned forward into the yellow light of two candles. “We’re telling you the truth,” he said. “Get the truth out.”

The morgue is an hour outside Dujiangyan on an isolated rural road, yet the parking lot was filled at 1:50 a.m. on Thursday. Parents and other family members clustered around the bodies of their children. Some burned fake money to bring their lost child good fortune in the afterlife. In one room, 25 small bodies were scattered on the floor. Some children had already been taken away; an empty white body bag lay near a sneaker and a filthy pair of boy’s trousers. Some families had placed flowers or incense inside empty water bottles as makeshift memorials.

“There are more in there,” said a man, pointing to a rear door. He walked outside to a walkway and paused. Scores of bodies, covered with sheets, were lined in two long rows on the concrete floor. Others were placed in an adjacent room. Parents sobbed or sat silently beside bodies.

“They are all students,” said the man in the blue shirt. “Look,” he said pointing to a red and white jacket folded beside one body. “That is the school uniform.” He pointed to a Mickey Mouse backpack. “There is a book bag.”

The two rows of bodies came to an open door that led to the large steel furnaces used for cremation. In China, the dead are almost always cremated fairly soon after death. Usually, there is enough time for funeral ceremonies and rituals, but parents said that officials were worried about cremating so many bodies before they started to decompose. So some parents have been asked if their children can be cremated with dead friends to save time.

Parents say they were only allowed to begin identifying their children on Wednesday. The bodies had remained inside the gated grounds of Xinjian Primary School for two days until officials began transporting them to the morgue on Wednesday.

The earthquake struck at 2:28 p.m. on Monday, and many parents rushed to the school. Xinjian had about 600 pupils, ages from roughly 7 to 12. When parents arrived most of the building had collapsed. They frantically pulled away bricks and chunks of concrete with their bare hands.

“We pleaded with the administrators to help us,” said one mother, Chen Li, 39, who came to the morgue on Wednesday to identify her son, a sixth grader. “We yelled, ‘Where are the soldiers? Send them to help us!’ ”

Parents say neighbors and students from a nearby college arrived by 4 p.m. to help with the digging. Local officials and school administrators also came but then left after inspecting the site. Two more hours passed before a large group of paramilitary police officers arrived and told the parents to leave because the area was too dangerous. Parents were relocated outside the school gate, unable to watch as the officers began digging.

Ms. Chen said her son, Zhang Yuanxin, was discovered the same day as the earthquake but then left uncovered in the rain with other bodies on the playground. She said two trucks arrived Wednesday and carried away bodies shortly before Mr. Wen arrived for his inspection.

“I think there were 50 bodies in two trucks that were carried away,” Ms. Chen said. “I asked those people, ‘Are you taking the bodies away?’ ”

But she said local officials lied to her and said they were only taking away tents.

Parents say they became so angry over the situation at the school by Tuesday that they formed the committee and complained to local officials. Officials in Dujiangyan could not be reached for comment, but parents say the officials relented on Wednesday by moving the children’s bodies to the morgue and providing shuttle buses for people waiting outside the school.

At the morgue on Wednesday, parents walked through rooms lined with bodies on the floor, lifting sheets in the unwanted search to identify a lost child. Cai Changrong, 37, held an urn containing the ashes of his cremated 9-year-old daughter. His wife, Hu Xiu, could not stop wailing.

“We didn’t find any bruises or injuries on her body,” said Ms. Hu, the mother. “But she lost all her nails. She was trying to scratch her way out. I think my daughter suffocated to death.”

Several parents wanted an investigation into the construction quality of school buildings in Dujiangyan. They say six schoolhouses collapsed in the city, even as other government buildings remain standing. One man said officials built two additional stories on the Xinjian school even though it had failed a safety inspection two years ago — allegations that could not be verified.

Mr. Li, the father dressing his dead daughter, also said he believed that the school was poorly built. He arrived at the school minutes after the quake and spent the next four hours searching for his daughter. His forearms were bruised and his fingernails were split and bloodied from digging.

He proudly handed over his cellphone and showed a picture of his daughter, Ke, taken last week. But Thursday morning, he and his wife were preparing for her cremation. They struggled to slip her into the pink pajamas and then dressed her in a gray sweatshirt and pants. Her mother placed a white silk mourning cloth under her clotted black hair.

Mr. Li said he lost his job in 1997 and had been living on a meager welfare payment. He said the school was filled with children from poor families. “My daughter was a very good student,” he said. “She was a quiet girl, and she liked to paint. We’re putting her in these clothes because she loved them.”

He said he was angry and sad. He said his daughter’s body was still warm when he found her at the morgue on Wednesday. He wondered how long she lived beneath the rubble. And then he turned away, leaning down slightly, and whispered in her ear.

“My little daughter,” he said quietly. “You used to dress yourself. Now I have to do it for you.”

For many people a routine visit to the doctor is anything but routine. But...

For many people a routine visit to the doctor is anything but routine. But for 1.8 million Texans (According to a University of Texas at Austin study) the visit to the doctor can be an even greater challenge. According to the study these Texans at some point in their lives have been a victim of sexual assault. According to RAINN 82% of people who are victims of rape/sexual assault never recieve medical interventions but they are being seen in the physicians office. They are being seen for symptomology related to chronic depression, eating disorders, obesity, anxiety disorders, gasteroentistinal problems, difficulty with concentration, maintaining healthy b0undaries/relationships and sleep disorders. Many doctors at intake will ask questions concerning a client's history that some people may indeed feel are invasive and personal. The problem is that when people with a history of sexual assault present themselves in the doctors office with these symptoms and a sexual assualt history has not been taken, physicians are missing opportunities to offer survivors access to interventive measures (through a referral system) to counseling, therapy, support groups and other social services. The second part of the problem is that almost 50% of persons sexually assaulted are under age 18. Of those victims, 70% of the victims know their perpetrators or are related them. Many physicians find this challenging with respect to having to report instances of child sexual abuse, but the law is not merky, they must report. The following are some other reasons that physicians list as why they do not screen:They fear opening Pandora's BoxThey lack the trainingThey lack the timeThey believe it is a personal issueThe cost would be too muchThese arguments are indeed valid but one has to wonder about the correlation between having to screen for domestic violence in the ob/gyn community but no such requirements for the other medical disciplines. When so many children are at risk it does not seem at all seem prudent or fair. But for the sake of a balanced argument, suppose all of these arguments had merit. The question then becomes not why it is not possible, but how can we work through the barriers of screening for sexual assault to be able to offer survivors access to the best possible services to ensure a better overall quality of life. With respect to training physicians must CME trainings which can be used toward education related to sexual assault. As for time, it is clear that time in the physicians office is less and less. However, others in the office can recieve the appropriate training to be able to approach individuals who make the decision to make an outcry. The staff can also where buttons which encourage people to ask questions; for example: Ask Me About Sexual Assult. This gives whomever wants to talk about the issue the opportunity to ask of their own volition in their own time about their concerns. Physicians can also work with local and are sexual assault agencies to have brochures in their offices which give informtion about sexual assault, available interventions, brochures that talk about help, hope and how to obtain justice. If the oath that the doctors take is to first do no harm, could it not be taken that lack of movement on this issue on behalf of victims, though passive is doing harm?As for this being a very personal issue, this is right. It is one that involves fear, shame, guilt, sometimes hopelessness and mistrust. When physicians make the decision not to ask the question at intake and directly to the client as a part of a routine doctor visit then they have made offering hope, healing and justice for survivors less attainable and contribute directly to the darkness and secrecy that predators depend on to continue these dastardly acts. It is their responsibility. The bottom line is that if advocates, survivors and other concerned persons don't let physicians know that screening is something they want to see done in their physicians office it will never get done. Let your physicians know that you want them to screen for sexual assault, have educational materials available in their office, have referral and legal brochures, DVDs available and also be prepared with respect to training to avoid re-victimization of victims.

More than three decades of research shows that a focus on effort—not on intelligence or ability—is key to success in school and in life." (Apparently, SciAm likes long titles.) There's a lot of work done in the margins on positive psychology, but two of the biggest factors are pretty simple:

Make sure your mate is smarter than you

Make sure your kid's friends are harder working than him

Of course, the main purpsoe of parenting isn't the creation of a high-achieving next generation. It's love. But high achievement doesn't necessarily hurt.

Coming upon the holiday season many non profit organizations (i.e. churches, schools, charities) are called upon to nurture those in need. This unfortunate circumstance can be strenuous and emotionally challenging to many involved, not too mention financially staggering for those attempting to raise necessary funds. That being said, wouldn’t it be nice to have an outlet for these numerous institutions to call upon in order to alleviate some of this tension by helping all of those involved. Well I have found one!!This Is Not A Solicitation In Any Way!!!! First and Foremost Please Understand That!!
<a This system is absolutely Free, No Fees Ever!!! You only have to register for Your own mall site and do your normal shopping (at all the brand stores you usually use) from your own shopping network. You’ll earn rebates for everything you buy. In addition, you give this free offer to those within your organization and recieve a small percentage rebate on what they buy from there own mall site. Also, you will find that the prices on your mall network are cheaper than what you’ll find if you were to go shopping yourself at your local mall–especially if you shop around on your mall site. Not too mention some of the proceeds from every member in the company will be sent to Save a child fund. It’s a total win win situation for everyone involved. This system allows you to raise money for your organization, help those within your organization save money while they shop, and help save children across the world with all of our buying power. Never before have I seen such a morally and economically sound program captured by one entity. Please take a look at this program, You’ll Be glad that you Did!!

I'm glad for her and hope that she does well by the end of this weekend. You can find more information on Little Mo here.

For my birthday I bought myself a real digital camera. I have to say real because the other one did not have clear pictures and was more toy-like. This one (Kodak Easy Share C743) is awesome and I can actually see what I've taken a picture of. It doesn't take much to please me, ya know...

'nough talk, more pictures. Okay, here are some Red Roof hotel pictures.
At the moment I am in the middle of a book by Mandasue Heller. She writes in the same vein as Martina Cole. I think I have read all Martina's except the new one I saw the other day.

Josephine Cox, now surely she should be due another book out too. Lyn Andrews too.

I have read all of Catherine Cookson's books and sadly, there will be no more.

I would like read Uncle Tom's Cabin. I remember reading John Halifax, Gentleman. That was a childrens classic. I wonder if they still have them?? A list of the classics, not the books.

Little Women, Heidi, What Katy Did, Black Beauty and many others.

Noticed in the paper that they are or might bring back The Eagle comic. They mentioned Girl and Girls Friend, I liked that one best if I can remember all those years ago. Suppose they will have to update them so they will appeal to todays girls and boys.

I was listening to her carefully, while she was talking with a sad voice...

I was listening to her carefully, while she was talking with a sad voice tone. She has been a close friend to me since high school, now she is a young beautiful 23 year-old lady. We talked a lot about many things...we even opened the book of our darkest secrets. I didn’t know that she was abused during her teenagerhood...she was describing me with perfect details, as if i was assisting directly the scene, the sexual intentions of her step father. She was 13 years old that time, he was 51. Her boops started apearing that time, and she was in transition between the childhood world and the teenagerhood one. She was fresh...like a newly opened flower...he was admiring her growing and glowing day after day. Asking for more hugs and looking for free time to be with her alone at home, while the mom is working. He started by making her sitting on his knees...then asking for more hugs for “Daddy”...progressing to warm her up in the clod winter by holding her and making circles on her back and breast...She was “smelling” that something was wrong with this behavior...tried to escape by serval ways: pretended to be sleepy while she was awake, locking herself in her rrom for hours, pretending studying at school while she was off, spend more time outside in the street till the arrival of her mom...She didn’t tell anyone about that... not her mother, not her brother and none of her friend. She was terrified and she was feeling bad, dirty and guilty. She was thinking of the happiness of her mother...how much bad she will feel when she would know the truth. She kept silence for years. She was praying God to end this torture...she was getting prettier and hotter...bad sexual intentions doubled. She resisted many time by following the same strategy...escaping and escaping. 2002 was a lucky year for her: her step father had a car accident and passed away after brain damage. While others were crying, she was laughing...her eyes were illuminating with joy...now she can sleep in peace without thinking what lie she would invent the following day. She was lucky...but what about others? millions of children are living that everyday, if it’s not worse... how can an adult man touch or think sexually about a child or a teenager? How a man dare to touch someone considered as his own child or worse yet carrying the same blood and gene? Is that a huge lack of sex ?...i don’t think so...the street, the TV, the magazines, the internet can satisfy those who are that hungry with professionnal females made for that...It is nothing but a sickness...a disgusting, horrible and dirty behavior. For those who have children: listen, follow, controle and protect your children (girls or boys) as much as you can...even if everything seem ok, there are always a dark hidden side of fear and shame that urge the child to keep the silence. It’s for you to break it.http://technorati.com/tag/pedophilia that’s sad.

I am a big fan of Bjorklund & Pellegrini's fifth chapter, “Classifying Cognition.” The text divides thinking into “implicit” and “explicit” (2002, 114) thinking. This “implicit” thinking appears to be the same thing as “automatic,” “peripheral,” “heuristic,” and “unconscious” while “explicit” appears to be the same thing as “controlled,” “central,” “systematic,” and “conscious” (Morris, Squires, Taber, & Lodge, 2003, 4). Additionally, implicit memory is refered to as “Memory System I” and explicit memory is called “Memory System II” (Bjorklund & Pellegrini, 123).

One of the text's most interesting sections is the application of implicit attitude tests on very young children. For instance, even if they could not answer a question about remembering old students, children act as if they recall old kindergarten classmates (119-120). The authors also mention other research (Clements & Perner, 1994) showing how implicit belief becomes more reliable than explicit belief before the child is three years old. This implicit superiority continues throughout life. It is interesting that explicit thinking has such little access to one's implicit state, as self-reports can be unreliable predictors of behavior (Kurzban & DeScioli, 2005).
MY NAME IS SHERRYByVIKRAM KARVEMy name is Sherry. I am a naughty young girl, I’m over seven months old and I live with my family in a lovely spacious bungalow surrounded by plenty of greenery. I wake up early in the morning, jump off my sofa, go to my father’s bed, rub my cold wet nose against his hand and give him a lick. He grunts and growls and opens his sleepy eyes, and the moment he sees me his face lights up and he lovingly caresses me and says, “Good Morning, Sherry,” and gets up from bed and opens the main door to let me jump out into the garden, do my ‘little job’ at my favorite place near the mango tree, generally dig in the soft morning mud a bit and sniff around to find out if there are any new morning smells, not forgetting to run and welcome the milkman the moment he comes on his cycle. When I return I find that my father is back in his bed and my mother is up and about. She pats and cuddles me and goes about her business making tea in the kitchen while I loiter around the house. She surreptitiously sneaks to the bedroom and slyly hands over a tidbit to my half sleeping father under the blanket when she thinks I am not looking. I pretend not to notice, as I do not want to spoil their fun. Earlier, when I was small and impatient, I used to snuffle out the tidbit from my father’s hand, but this spoilt his fun and he became grumpy, and now that I am a mature young girl well experienced in the ways of the human world I have realized that it is better to act dumb and let these humans think they are smarter than me. So I go outside, sit down and put on a look of anticipation towards the gate and pretend not to notice my mother hiding and peeping through the corner of the window and giggling to herself. The moment the newspaperman comes on his cycle and shouts ‘paper’, I rush to the gate and fetch the newspaper in my mouth, gripping it just right between my teeth, and hold it up to my horizontal father, who gets up, takes the paper from me and gives me the dog-biscuit he’s been hiding in his hand, as my mother, who has rushed behind me, watches me with loving pride in her eyes. My brother and my sister, who till now were fast asleep in the other room, call out my name, and as I dart between their beds wagging my tail, they both hug and cuddle me all over saying, “Good Morning, Sherry. Sherry is a good girl!” Everyone is cheerful and happy and my day has begun! I love my family, even though they are humans; and I love my house, my surroundings, the place I stay, the life I live – but before I tell you all that, let me tell you where I came from.My ‘ birth-mother’ is a ferocious Doberman who lives in a bungalow in Kothrud and my ‘dog-father’ is unknown, though they suspect it may be the Labrador next door (but the vet wanted proof, so in the column against breed he wrote ‘Doberman X’). I was a sickly weakling, hardly a month old, the only girl, last of the litter of eleven, and the owners were wondering what to do with me. Nine of my handsome brothers had already been selected and taken away, and the owners wanted to keep the tenth, the most beautiful and healthy of them all. They had kept me all alone separated from my ferocious Doberman mother who was growling menacingly in a cage nearby. No one wanted me and I could hear people whispering how ugly and weak I was and I wondered what fate lay in store for me. It hurt to be unwanted and when I heard people wanting to send me away to a farmhouse, or ‘dispose’ me of, I felt frightened when I wondered what was going to be my destiny. One evening a few people came over and a gentle woman with kindness in her eyes looked at me, and on the spur of the moment lovingly picked me up, and the way she tenderly snuggled me I felt true love for the first time. This was my new mother. They got into a car and drove across Pune, past Aundh, across the river, till they reached a bungalow. The kind woman was wondering what her husband’s reaction would be. It was dark. I was scared and cuddled up snugly my mother’s arms to feel safer. Suddenly I found a tough-looking bearded man staring at me. Shivering with fear I looked back at him in terror as he extended his hands towards me. But the moment he held me in his large cozy hands, caressed me lovingly and put his finger tenderly in my mouth, I felt protected, loved, safe and secure. This was my new father and he had already decided my name – Sherry – the same name of his earlier canine ‘daughter’. [‘Sherry’ means ‘beloved’ – not the wine drink you are thinking about!].“She was destined to come here,” my mother said.“Yes,” My father said feeding me warm milk. They made a nice warm bed for me in a basket and put it below theirs. And as I drifted into sleep, they both fondled me with their hands. I felt so wonderful and happy for the first time in my life. I had found my true home and my family.I am feeling quite sleepy now and I’ll end here and have a nap. If you want to know more about me, my delightfully mischievous life, and the naughty things I do, please let me know and I’ll tell you all about it!
