By JUDITH BALEA What Ermelandro Lagura wanted was a retirement free from financial worry. So he gambled on stocks, hoping to grow his nest egg. Little did he expect that the stock market, which snowballed to record highs last year, would since fall drastically, with the Philippine Stock Exchange composite index вЂ” the barometer of price movements of listed companiesвЂ”shedding 32 percent to 2,459.98 points in the first half. "I'm afraid," Lagura shared. The 66-year-old government retiree opted to put his money in equities rather than in fixed-income securities because of their potential for higher returns. But these instruments come with highвЂ”and sometimes, harshвЂ”risk. Lagura has so far invested P700,000.00 in stocks, roughly 30 percent of which is in danger of being wiped out because of the market's nasty slump. "What I invested was a large portion of what I received from the Government Service Insurance System when I retired in March 2007." Now at the crossroads, the newbie investor is faced with only two options: cut losses and dump holdings or stay illiquid until prices go up again. Both, though, will surely affect his financial worth and spending plans. While Lagura frets over the tumbling stock market, David Co, a long-term investor who is used to the bumps and bruises of trading, remains calm. Co says the stock market doldrums is nothing new to him. "It's like a rollercoaster. It goes up and down, sometimes violently. It'll take time before you get the hang of it." Co, 61, is a real estate consultant who himself is preparing for retirement. But unlike Lagura, Co has invested in stocks for over 30 years, making him more learned in minimizing risks and managing his own portfolio. "I study the fundamentals of companies. I pick up those that have been doing well and are likely to continue doing well. And I do it with prudence. I don't invest one-time, big-time." The two small stockholders, while differing in sentiment, say they'll ride out the current downturn and won't join the selling spree that has punished the market since the start of the year. "I'll lose too much if I cash out my investment. I guess I'll just wait," says Lagura. But whether the attitudeвЂ”that of waiting and staying the courseвЂ”can help buoy the market to favorable levels or not remains a question. Lagura and Co are two of the 103,412 Filipino investors, who, according to a recent study by the PSE, are considered active or involved in at least one trade a year.
As of end-2007, there were a total of 430,681 accounts being maintained for Filipino investors by PSE trading participants, of which 412,459 are owned by retail investors and 18,222 by institutional investors.
Listless trade Stocks may still wander in listless trade in the second half as investors, particularly foreign ones, remain sidelined and risk-averse. The PSE survey said there are 4,713 foreign accounts, composed of 3,812 retail and 901 institutional, in the local bourse. According to a joint report by First Metro and Investment Corp. and the University of Asia and the Pacific, foreign selling became evident at the start of the year as fears of a United States-led global slowdown hit financial markets. The local stock market had entered the bear territory as early as January 22, when the PSEi dove through the floor and closed at 2,978.41, down 24 percent from its peak of 3,896.74 last October 8. Analysts define a bear market as one that falls over a threshold of 20 percent from its all-time high. Then another crisis surfaced: unrelenting rise in oil prices. It pushed inflation higher across the region and further eroded investor confidence, prompting more foreign investors to pull away from emerging markets like the Philippines. For June alone, data cited by the joint report showed that foreign investors sold P18.2 billion worth of local shares and bought only P15.8 billion. Moreover, foreign buying recorded a drop of 42.4 percent, hardly an indication of buoyant investor interest. "Foreign investors the net sellers. Higher inflation rate, slower economy, and peso depreciation are forcing foreign investors to unload their shares. risk-averse in the next months, this will not help the stock market regain an upward momentum," the report says. Price hikes, not just in pump but also food, pushed inflation to jump 11.4 percent in June. It was the highest level since 11.5 percent in May 1994 and the first double-digit number since January 1999. For the first six months, inflation averaged 7.6 percent, way past the government's full-year target of 3.5 to 5 percent. The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas said it would take necessary measures, including raising interest rates, to curb inflation, which already began taking its toll on consumer spending and company earnings. BSP lifted its benchmark interest rates by 25 basis points on June 5, right after the May inflation reading came in at 9.4 percent. It is expected to raise interest rates again when the central bank's rate-setting policy team meets this July 17. Risk aversion may soften But risk aversion, notes ING's Manila branch office in a recent presentation, may also dissipate within the remainder of the year as growth in the Philippine economy stays positive. ING is an investment management firm. Due to the twin impact of high inflation and interest rates, as well as global economic slowdown, the Philippines scaled down its gross domestic product target to 5.7-6.5 percent from the earlier 6.3-7.0 percent. Nonetheless, ING says, "GDP growth is still strong." ING also remains upbeat on overseas Filipino worker remittances coming into the country, saying these funds should reinforce domestic demand, a major driver of the economy. Apart from the country's macroeconomic backdrop, ING says its corporate fundamentals also continue to be sound. Listed companies now have strong cash flows and earnings potentials as well as very little debts, making them attractive to investors. ING forecasts the PSEi to end 2008 above current levels at 3,200. Bargain-hunting With no fresh and concrete positive leads, the only thing propping up the market recently is bargain-hunting, says Claire Quiray of Accord Capital Equities Corp. This means investors have been snapping up beaten-down stocks at cheap prices. "For the past days, the PSEi has enjoyed a technical rebound because of its oversold conditions," she says. From July 3 to 9, the PSEi gained 6.1 percent after hitting a two-year low of 2,339.84. However, Joseph Roxas, president of Eagle Equities, notes that a cloud of extreme caution still overshadows the market due to lingering inflationary pressures from oil prices and expectations of rising interest rates. "This rally may be brief. Trading is very, very cautious. Turnover remains low." Roxas says those that actively participating are only day traders. A day trader thrives in market volatility and makes profits out of price swings. He closes his position at the end of day. "What they do is get in and get out immediately." Among sectors, oil and mining have been the favorite of investors lately. They are dubbed as market darlings since they are the ones likely to continue to buck the market's lackluster performance amid swelling oil prices. Others pick up telcos because of their attractive dividend yields and the utilities, which have constant demand for their products. Even as the market seemed to have picked up in early sessions of the second half, thanks to positive news overseas and a quick relief from nagging oil spikes, the outlook remains murky and analysts' predictions vary. Sell-offs in the first semester may mean the worst is over or the worse is yet to come. At the end of the day, investing in the stock market may be nothing but a gamble and each player must put in his wisest bet.

Administrator Vicente Suazo Jr. of the Maritime Industry Authority has resigned from his post, saying he would like to go back to the private sector.

I already resigned… I've done my job and I think I have to go back to the private sector and do all my plans for myself and my family, Suazo said in an interview on radio dzMM.

Suazos resignation reportedly became effective August 31. Prior to his resignation, he served more than four of his six-year term in MARINA.

He also denied that he was pressured to resign, saying that he had already planned on leaving the agency even before the sinking of Sulpicio Lines, Inc.s MV Princess of the Stars at the height of typhoon Frank on June 21 in Romblon province.

MARINA is currently investigating the sea tragedy that killed hundreds of passengers and crewmen. The agency is looking into the possible suspension of Sulpicio Lines franchise.

MARINA had grounded Sulpicio Lines passenger and cargo fleet following the sinking of the passenger ferry. Almost two months later, however, it lifted the suspension on the firm's cargo vessels.

Reports said MARINA was forced to lift the suspension but Suazo was quick to deny that his resignation had something to do with the issue.

He maintained that MARINA lifted the suspension because of the appeal from cargo owners who were affected by the grounding of the Sulpicio Lines vessels.

Meanwhile, MARINA assured that its hearing on the sea tragedy would not be affected following Suazos resignation.

Police auxiliaries may spawn more violence -- senators

Senators have expressed fears of further violence erupting in Mindanao with the government's move to arm thousands of civilians to repel Moro fighters.

This is totally irresponsible of the DILG Secretary . Mindanao is not a war zone! Senator Maria Consuelo Jamby Madrigal said in a statement.

Madrigal said forming police auxiliaries and arming village watchmen with shotguns might lead to civil war. She said only warlords and traditional politicians will benefit from the government's latest tactic to defend communities from attacks of lawless elements, particularly radical Moro Islamic Liberation Front fighters.

The senator said the government should leave the responsibilities of protecting communities to the police and the military. If the Philippine Army cannot do so, this is a dire indication of the incompetence of the Arroyo administration.

Senator Loren Legarda, meanwhile, cautioned the Philippine National Police as she fears arming civilians in Mindanao and other parts of the country may aggravate the worsening peace situation.

We are aware of the PNP's intention, but it should be done with extreme caution to avoid worsening the peace situation, Legarda said. The PNP must be stringent in the deputization of police auxiliaries, and ensure that they are provided rigorous training for them to be effective in the anti-terror drive.

She also reminded the PNP that the thousands of shotguns to be distributed to police auxiliaries may fall into wrong hands.

When the PNP-provided shotguns should become part of the so-many loose firearms in the country today, then the perceived cure becomes part of the problem, she said.

13,000 shotguns

Chief Superintendent Nicanor Bartolome, PNP spokesman, said Friday that 1,000 shotguns have been distributed to police units in Zamboanga Peninsula, Davao, Northern Mindanao, and Soccskargen regions.

Bartolome said that under the Executive Order 546, which deals with the Internal Security Operations of the PNP, the police organization can create police auxiliaries.

The timing is only made now but actually this is long overdue for our police auxiliaries in different parts of the country and we are giving priority now to the four regions of Mindanao, Bartolome said.

He explained that the four Mindanao regions are being prioritized because of the hostilities committed by the MILF base commands led by Ameril Umbra Kato and Abdulrahman Macapaar alias Commander Bravo.

The hostilities of the two MILF commanders have spawned clashes in Maguindanao province, where the rebels are believed to be hiding. Reports said at least 100 deaths have been recorded in the two-week hostilities in the region.

Legarda, meanwhile, said 12,000 more shotguns will be delivered by the police to other parts of the country.

Bartolome, for his part, assured the public that the volunteers will be properly trained and selected under the control and the supervision of the police. He said local government officials will help the police identify competent people who will be admitted as police auxiliaries.

The police official said unlike the civilian volunteers organization, police auxiliary units are authorized to carry firearms with a role of defending their villages against criminals and insurgents.

Meaning they cannot get out of their respective areas, he said. He added that local police forces will be responsible in determining the extent of the volunteers role in police operations

The PNP will need their assistance like for example, running after criminals. It has to be properly guided by our rules. We cannot just allow them to operate by themselves. Its always the PNP that supervises... They cannot operate or act independently, Bartolome said.

Bartolome said that the PNP has yet to finalize the rules on how the volunteers will be recruited, and how they will be trained and armed. He said the PNP still has to determine whether they will issue uniforms to the selected police auxiliaries.

TOKYO - UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon pledged on Tuesday to press Myanmar to bring "genuine freedom" to its people after he struck a deal to bring in international aid after a devastating cyclone.
Ban in May became the first secretary general in 44 years to visit Myanmar where he persuaded junta leader Than Shwe to accept foreign disaster experts.
The junta, suspicious of the outside world, had waited weeks before letting in significant international help to cope with the disaster, which left more than 138,000 people dead or missing.
"If and when it is necessary, I am going to broaden and deepen this process in my dialogue with the Myanmar authorities," Ban told a news conference on a visit to Tokyo.
"You have my firm commitment and assurances that I will work very hard to help the Myanmar people to enjoy genuine freedom and democracy," he said.
A UN envoy, former Nigerian foreign minister Ibrahim Gambari, has made little visible progress on his missions to Myanmar since the junta clamped down on mass protests in September last year.
The junta in May extended the house arrest of opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi, who has spent most of the last 18 years confined to her home.
Ban said that despite the delay in accepting international aid teams, the junta has largely lived up to its word in allowing access.
"Things seem to be moving in the right direction," Ban said.
"As far as I know as of today, international workers and UN staff have been able to carry out their humanitarian assistance as has been agreed," he said.

KABUL - The US-led coalition in Afghanistan on Thursday deflected accusations that it killed 11 Pakistani soldiers in an air strike, releasing video footage which it says shows its forces targeting insurgents.
Islamabad has accused US-led forces in Afghanistan of launching an "unprovoked and cowardly" attack on the checkpost in Pakistan's volatile Mohmand tribal zone, further straining ties between the "war on terror" allies.
In response, US officials said Washington regretted the "reported loss of Pakistani life" but insisted its forces had carried out a "legitimate strike" in the early hours of Wednesday -- and had given Pakistan advance warning.
On Thursday, the coalition backed those claims with video showing "precision" strikes on a group of seven rebels who sought refuge in Pakistan after attacking a coalition reconnaissance patrol in eastern Afghanistan.
The grainy black and white video footage, taken by an unmanned drone, shows a first strike targeted at men hiding behind a rock who fire two rocket-propelled grenades at coalition troops offscreen.
The US-led soldiers were attacked while trying to move to a pick up point for extraction by helicopter when they were attacked by the "anti-Afghan forces" said a commentary supplied with the video.
A huge explosion lights up the area and the militants then seek cover in a deep ravine nearby before three more bombs, one of which is not shown, land on the militants.
"It is clear there are no structures or outposts in the impact area," the voiceover says, adding that all of the militants were killed.
But an AFP photographer who reached the scene late Wednesday saw a large crater near a mud-brick Pakistani paramilitary outpost, which was badly damaged.
Local tribesmen were scraping pieces of human flesh from nearby trees, while shredded military uniforms and pools of blood littered the scene.
The incident would be the worst of its kind since Islamabad sided with the United States in 2001 against the Taliban and Al-Qaeda, and comes amid growing international unease over Pakistan's recent negotiations with the Taliban.
"The timing is terrible," said Bruce Riedel, a senior Brookings Institution analyst as well as a former CIA officer and advisor to three US presidents on South Asian affairs.
Pakistani security officials and residents said that the incident began when Afghan troops crossed the porous frontier and tried to occupy a strategic Pakistani post in a long-disputed area of the troubled tribal belt.
Residents said word spread in the conservative region and armed tribesmen along with Pakistani Taliban fighters arrived and attacked the Afghan soldiers, who retreated and returned later with coalition forces.
A spokesman for an umbrella group of Pakistani Taliban movements, Maulvi Omar, accused Western forces of "provocative action" by bombing Pakistani territory.
"We will not tolerate it and we know how to deal with Afghan and foreign forces," Omar told AFP.
Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said on the sidelines of a Afghan donors' conference in Paris that he would raise the issue with the NATO secretary general.
"We have taken the coalition attack in Mohmand seriously and summoned the US ambassador and conveyed our feelings to her," he told private Geo television.
In an unusually harsh statement, the Pakistani army on Wednesday "condemned this completely unprovoked and cowardly act" and warned that it had "hit at the very basis" of cooperation in the anti-terror fight.
US State Department spokesman Gonzalo Gallegos said Washington was "sad to see the reported loss of Pakistani life," but added: "Our troops were defending themselves against a hostile act, which they have the right to do."
Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf backed the toppling of Afghanistan's Taliban regime after the September 11, 2001 attacks, but his support has angered many Pakistanis and drawn the wrath of militants.
Earlier this year his allies were voted out of office, and the new government has sought to strike peace deals with militants in the restive tribal zones.

One of five employees of the Basilan Electric Cooperative, Inc. abducted by suspected members of the Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf bandit group in Tuburan, Basilan, Thursday morning has been released according to the Philippine Army.
Lt. Col. Romeo Brawner Jr., Army public affairs chief, said abducted victim Ronie Tansiyung has been released and was already in the Sinulatan Civilian Auxiliary Geographical Forces Unit detachment in Tuburan town.
The remaining victims of the abduction as identified by Brawner earlier are Emilberto Singson, Alberto Singson, Paul Helwig and Ian Helwig.
Brawner said that based on a report, the victims were abducted by an Abu Sayyaf group headed by sub-leader Nur Hasan Jamiri in Sitio Batubabag, Barangay Sinulatan, Tuburan around 10 a.m.
Earlier reports said the victims, members of Baselco's engineering department, were conducting meter reading in the area when abducted by Jamiri's group.
Brawner said the victims and their abductors are now believed to be at Mangalot in Tuburan.
The vehicle of BASELCO which was used by the power cooperative employees was recovered by troops of Marine Battalion Landing Team 7 under Lt. Col. Leonard Teodoro, said the Army spokesman.
Brawner also said the together with Jamiri are Maman Mutahim, Sakib Kaduwari and Commander Usih Hasim, who the Army spokesman said is identified with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.
Chief Superintendent Joel Goltiao, police director of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, had said his office received a report about the kidnapping through a text message. He said he had asked the Basilan police to confirm the report.
Early this month, an ABS-CBN news team led by senior correspondent Ces Drilon and Mindanao peace advocate Octavio Dinampo were abducted by suspected Abu Sayyaf bandits in Sulu province.
The news team and Dinampo have been released. Security forces have been pursuing the kidnappers.
The provinces of Sulu and Basilan are known lairs of the dreaded bandit group, which has alleged links with Osama bin Ladens al-Qaeda terror network.
'Loose organization'
Speaking before foreign media, Armed Forces chief Gen. Alexander Yano said the Abu Sayyaf group has become a loose organization and its estimated 360 members are scattered across the hinterlands of Mindanao.
He said the military has yet to confirm who is Abu Sayyaf's current leader. There were reports that Radulan Sahiron had been acting as the bandit group's leader. There were reports that Sahiron is somewhere in Sulu.
"Some leaders that have emerged but we cannot confirm a single leader in the stature of Janjalani who could have welded together the Abu Sayyaf Group into a united, formidable group," the military chief added.
About a dozen leaders of the Abu Sayyaf, a group blamed for the country's worst terrorist attacks, have been killed or arrested in the past seven years after the government allowed US special forces to be deployed in the south.

The Iloilo Rehabilitation Center in Pototan town in Iloilo province has prepared a fun way to celebrate the summer for its inmates.
A two-month long sports festival was launched aiming to gather all the inmates and promote camaraderie.
Targeting each inmates sportsmanship, the rehabilitation center invited playing priests from the Archdiocese of Jaro for an exhibition game.
Despite the heat and a quite busy schedule for the priests, they still maintained their adrenaline rush and fought their way against the equally competitive inmates of IRC.
Fr. Joel Eslabra from the Jaro archdiocese said that this was their way of showing that they are one with the inmates and that they are not afraid of playing with them.
Edgar Sorsano, coach for team IRC, said the mere fact that the priests visited them already shows their commitment in helping the inmates and this was highly appreciated.
The game ended with 89-84 with Team IRC winning over the priests.
But for the two teams, winning is not always the end goal but being able to participate in a very worthwhile and enjoyable activity during the summer season.

High school football players are most likely to sustain severe injuries during kickoff and punting, a new study suggests.To determine if there were certain aspects of a football game that were the most dangerous, researchers from Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, analyzed data from the 2005-2006 National High School Sports Injury Surveillance Study.Overall, about 20 percent of football-related injuries were considered severe, according to the study published in the current issue of Research in Sports Medicine.The number of severe injuries varied, depending on the phase of the game. During kickoff and punt, 33 percent of injuries were severe. Of those, 20 percent were concussions.Overall, about 44 percent of injuries deemed severe were bone fractures.Researchers found injuries sustained at the beginning or middle of a game tended to be more severe compared to injuries at the end or during overtime, suggesting that changes of intensity of play throughout a game can impact the risk of severe injury.About 16 percent of injuries occurred during the beginning of the game, 54 percent occurred during the middle and 30 percent occurred toward the end."Not only does the time in competition affect injuries but also the phase of play," said study author Dawn Comstock, principal investigator at the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children's Hospital. "During kickoff and punting, a greater proportion of severe injuries occurred, compared to all other phases of play."Researchers also looked at how field location, time of competition and phase of play impacted injury severity. About three-quarters of injuries occurred in the middle of the field."Although more injuries occurred in the middle of the field, injury severity and diagnosis varied little by field location," Comstock said.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - mediocre is the word

Not this particular match, that happens, especially when West Ham have lost half their squad to injury and suspension - but this season in general

Sure, ramapnt 4-1 wins for Liverpool at Old Trafford and a 4-0 for Arsenal over Blackburn might be interesting - but this is glossing over the rest of the league

I have been keeping my eye on the relegation battle, in the hope that Boro or one of their perpetual mates finally go down - and noticed that from relegation to 7th (ie. the whole league outside the top 6) there is only 11 points between them

This seems large - and on closer inspection there are huge jumps in points up to the 'big 3' (sorry arsenal - this is just a current term, you are scrapping for 4th right now and well behind) - from West Ham in 7th at 40, to Everton at 48, then the other two at 52, then into the 60s for the big 3

Now obviously we still have nine games to go but I had assumed this closeness at the lower end would disappear as the league went on, and it still hasn't - Stoke sit within a hair's breadth of displacing 4 other teams above them, while Boro could also scramble out to 16th with one unlikely win like they had against the Reds - it's mad

I have been trying to find the table from last year at 29 games or similar, but it's proving difficult - basing a comparison on the final table isn't exactly scientific but it's the best I can do

last year in 7th were Blackburn at 58, closely followed by Portsmouth and City in the high 50s - now can you see any teams getting into the higher 50s? tbh when a match comes up between anyone in the lower 7/10 of the league I have no idea what will happen, unless Fulham or Stoke are at home - obviously 9 games = a potential 27, perfectly possible to get into 60+ - but frankly that's not happening to west ham, wigan or anyone else in there - it's going to be a slow climb to the 40s and 50s for these guys

That of course probably means there's still some fight in this relegation battle - could we see a legendary 40 point line? last year it was 36 and I think Stoke can push the others up to at least that

As for who is safe? I'm saying any of the bottom 9 are eligible to go down, yep - tottenham are now safe, and even West Brom may save themselves (but they won't)

logically I can't see Bolton dropping, and for Hull to go down would be a record (doesn't mean it can't happen tho) - they are in keeping with this league and should claw the points they need

as for the rest - I'm relying on Stoke and boro to keep the pressure on, and meanwhile I'm going to look for a game by game table to get some facts...

So, I watched the Super Bowl at my parents house. My wife was there...sewing a stuffed monkey for my soon-to-be-nephew. I spent most of the game in silence, wondering to myself why I hate the Cardinals so much. I mean, I know there are a lot of things to dislike about them -- Kurt Warner for one. He just bothers me. I am sure that he is a great guy, but I just want to punch him. - Edge. I never was very impressed with him when he was in his "prime", but he has to be 75 now. I know that old people go to Arizona to die, but should we be forced to watch them while they are doing it?- The fans. That is when it hit me. I hate the "fans". These are the same people who had no idea about what to do when the Diamondbacks were in the Series. These are the fair weather fans that give everyone else a bad name. I started hating teams because of their fans back when the Angels won the Series. I live near Edison Field. Midway through the season I was going to games that were half full...at best. All of a sudden the All Star break happens and everyone has Angels gear on. Every car on the freeway is flying an Angels flag. What the hell? Where were these people last year? Five years ago? It really got to me. When men are born, they either have the sports gene or they don't. If you are born with the gene, you automatically inherit a team to root for. You are not allowed to jump on and off the bandwagon. You lose your "Man Card" if you do this. Now I know that this may seem a little harsh, but these people are giving true fans a bad name. These are the idiots that bang the crap out of thunder sticks. These are the same idiots who need a rally monkey to tell them when to cheer. If you don't know when you need to get excited, don't come. These are the same idiots that leave during the 7th inning to beat the traffic. We have generations of children growing up thinking that Major League Baseball only goes 7 innings. I need a drink.Anyways, it is funny how hating a team will make you as interested in a game as having your team play in a game. I wasn't rooting for the Steelers so much as I was rooting against the Cardinals...and I felt horrible about it. With the exception of Warner and Grandpa Edge, I am sure that most of them are great guys. They have spent years and years trying to get to this game and I was secretly rooting for them all to break a leg. When Fitzgerald scored that amazing touchdown, my body almost literally split in two. One side wanted to high five every living thing in a two mile radius. The other half of me wanted to vomit at the thought of Warner winning another Super Bowl while I had to spend way to much time watching his wife secretly control him like a puppet. Then...the nearly impossible happened. Big Ben drove the team down the field and Santonio made an even more improbable catch for the winning touchdown. I was so happy I almost dry humped my parents Chihuaha. This was not the greatest Super Bowl ever. It was a horrible three and a half quarters followed by an amazing finish. The ads were mediocre. The half time show was decent, yet aged. Both teams deserved to lose. I was exhausted from being so up and down and it felt great. The lesson from all of this. Don't hate puppies. Kurt learned this the hard way so you don't have to...

so, do you want to know the real reason I hate Ronny?

...Fantasy football - that's right, fantasy football - the most irritating thing for me is that if you wanted to be a decent manager last season you had to have the 31-goal season diving wonder in your squad or you got hammered - (this is the official premier league fantasy game by the way) - with nearly 300 points he probably justifies his 14 million price tag this year - but at 3 million higher than the already expensive likes of lampard, gerrard and fabregas he completely dominates a team, you basically have to find an extra cheapie who may get points to balance him

there's not much I can do about it, if he was cheaper even more people would have him, and his score does pretty much warrant the pricetag - but I don't want to have to buy him and ruin the balance of my team(s) - I pride myself on sneakily buying the likes of Cahill, ashley young, arteta, zaki and rory delap - but none have the ridiculous consistency that ronaldo had last year, which meant without him you were always playing catch up and having to divert your funds to him, meaning tactics were watered down - i found the whole experience very annoying - "build your fantasy team of fifteen players, built in ronaldo for 14 million, required: 2 dirt cheap midfielders from fulham"

obviously there are popular players, but he had such consistency that everyone had to have him if they wanted to win - 31 goals in 38 games is ridiculous, especially considering forwards get less points than midfielders, so the expensive torres with 24 goals got proportionately less - so the european 'forward of the year' got extra points for being called a winger, while the winger* ashley young was classed as a forward and got less...strange huh?

and so that is why i am not happy about ronaldo's return, while i may dislike the diving little s**t and all the hype around him I particularly loathe the fact that he may well reduce the fun of fantasy football (how sad am i??) - i was so happy when he had surgery (what? don't look at me like that, he's not dying or anything) - no ronaldo at the start made the fun of finding players like wright philips and deco, or the failures of bentley, and the tottenham team in general (love it), much better

but now he has returned, i'm hoping he won't pay his way as much this year, which would give me a massive advantage over those novices who already bought him (leaving 14 million on the bench) and will snap him up this week - what with berbatov up front he may have to share his goal tally a bit because quite frankly i don't want to fork out 14 mil on this incredibly top heavy player - time will tell, and i'll get pasted...

That’s right, FOREIGN idols.In 2007, Indian Football has not just cricket, Formula 1 or even hockey to contend with; it has the European football leagues to overcome.Don’t even bother walking into a sports shop to ask for a Mohun Bagan T-shirt. “ We don’t have any of those, but why not try our range of Spanish , English, Italian, German or even MLS t-shirts?”, is the answer you will get. The domestic league? It's a joke. Some of the teams simply play to exist in the league. Most of them end up spending most of their money hiring Brazilian players and African players to bail them out of their misery. In 2006-2007 the 29 foreign players in the league scored as many as 133 of the 243 goals scored, ;eaving the 254 Indians to manage 110 strikes between them. Our only ray of sunshine? Sunil Chetri, who top scored among the Indians with 12 goals.The practice grounds, football arenas, television broadcasts are all a huge mess. The game was scheduled before the Wake-Forest-as-conference-champ days, but it was satisfactory to dispose of last season's ACC victor. That the victory was only be three points made it all the better to watch.Likewise, listening (via ESPN Radio) to highlights of the Michigan / Oregon game was terrific. With all apologies to the greatness of the Pac 10, the public immolation of Michigan -- and with her the Big 10 generally -- has a very ritual-sacrifice feel to it.

Oh golly, it's the season. Every year it's the same. It also seems as if the seasons get nearer together. I cannot blame my age this time for it either.Ladies all over Britain may be feeling the same. Yes, football is back again. Not just on a Saturday as in days of yore. Not just in the daylight hours. No, it can be on anytime. And, it is. lolYesterday we went shopping to nearby Morecambe. You may not know this but Morecambe is now in the league.The game was supposed to kick-off at 3pm. But at that time there was a queue still waiting to get in. Well, it was the first game for them. So kick-off started late. 0 - 0 was the score.Cricket hasn't quite finished either. Loose Women finished Friday. A lot of ladies like watching soccer. Good for them. The thought of standing or even sitting in the cold, rainy and windy weather, puts me off. Go for it Morecambe! Please have a great season.

Football.....Morecambe won soccer today! So it's Wimbledon in a fortnight's time! Well done to Morecambe Football Club. Good on the Shrimps.Not needed for work this week. Happy birthday! After all, it's not everyday you celebrate your birthday, is it? Look, you may even try to avoid these birthday wishes, by saying it's not a merit and that times goes by in the exact same way for everybody and that it's nothing but a convention, and so on.

But you deserve it! You deserve it because of the way you accupy your days, the intelligent, cheerful and pleasant way you spend your time; your good mood and willingness to go that extra mile to help your friends especially "Hisham", even those who turn to be not such good friends after all!!

Himdownstairs is glued to the football on TV. Huh, wish I enjoyed it too. Not to worry, as long as his team wins and he is happy, all is well. I am so interested in footie that I don't know which team, his fave team is playing. Just when I thought it was getting better, staff shortages again. Oh well, as I keep reminding myself, if I can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen! So, maybe it's time for me to retire gracefully. (Not that I could do anything gracefully.) But I know I will carry on a little longer and wait until the better weather arrives! We got our car on Saturday. It's really nice. There are things in it that our other, older model didn't have. Quite good fun knowing, what means what! The CD player is simple, even for me. Not really showing off, well, I suppose I am, just a bit. Last had a cig about 3pm. (Up to then, just three.) I haven't a nicotine patch on, not used the inhaler or sucked on a lozenge. So, if I carry on, Wednesday 3pm, will see me with all the nicotine out of my body and also all the carbon dioxide. Please watch this space. lol Thank you.

MILAN, Italy - Inter Milan moved into first place in the Italian league after beating Catania 2-1 Sunday on goals from Dejan Stankovic.

Stankovic headed in Luis Figo's cross in the 29th minute, and then added another in the 75th with a powerful drive from the edge of the area.

Catania forward Giuseppe Mascara scored the first goal of the game in the 16th with a shot from 30 yards. Inter had a chance to add another goal, but substitute Julio Ricardo Cruz failed a convert a penalty in the 67th.

"I thought we began quite well, but then we conceded a freak goal," Inter coach Roberto Mancini said. "Catania then upped their game ... but I thought we deserved the win, particularly after the missed penalty."

Also, Reggina beat AS Roma 1-0 and Atalanta topped Palermo 3-2.

Inter leads the league with 14 points. Roma and Palermo have 12 points each, with Roma ahead on goal difference.

Luca Toni scored his fourth goal of the season to help Fiorentina beat Empoli 2-1 and win an away game for the first time this season. The Italy striker scored in the 77th minute.

LONDON (AP) — Bolton came from behind to beat Newcastle 2-1 and move into third place in the English Premier League.

Finally he showed up.

Arsenal 2, Charlton 1 at the Valley this afternoon, thanks in large part to the heroics of Robin van Persie. His miraculous volley was spectacular enough to see us move up to 6th place in the table with 11 points. It was our 5th consecutive win. We did not play well as a team, however. Kolo and Gallas looked uncomfortable when dealing with long balls. Gallas especially looked of the pace. He is definitely not a 100% yet. Hoyte again failed to impress and could be blamed for the first goal. He lost Hasselbaink completely and when he did finally manage to catch up was shrugged off too easily for my liking. The sooner he doesn’t have to play the better. Jens had a decent game and had one outstanding save, diving low to his left. He has looked impressive this season—no World Cup hangover.

That being said, the 2-1 scoreline is quite deceptive. When we had the ball, we looked quick to counter and difficult to stop. This game could have well finished 6-3. Henry and Cesc were denied by good saves by Carson. Van Persie missed a sitter. Charlton had a poor first half but played well in the second. They were denied a clear penalty off Gallas’ hand, and Hasselbaink flashed a header just wide of the post. This was one of the most entertaining games we have played this season. Charlton, unlike most teams, were not afraid to attack us.

Hleb’s contribution today will be overshadowed by van Persie. He played a large part in both goals, stupefying 3 Charlton defenders before passing across the box to RvP for the first goal and threading a brilliantly-paced through ball to Eboue who set up the second. Hleb is an integral part of the squad, he proved that again today.

A short bit on the man of the match before I wrap this post up. Over the last couple of months a lot of Arsenal fans have questioned his future at the club. Some people (even some who write for this site) say he cannot play alongside Henry in front. The game today proved that his talent is worth the frustration he fuels when he misses tap-ins like the one today that would have completed his hat-trick. In the long run, today’s goals (especially the second one) will give him a huge lift and hopefully this will translate into goals. Gooners need to be patient—he can be a 20 goal a season striker. He is NOT a winger. With patience from the fans, he will be a legend at this club.

In all it was a great result. We lost the lead, subsequently equalized and then fired in the winner just after half-time. Even though we did not play our best, we came out with all 3 points on the road. It was a typical result for a Champion.
