A neuroscientist has argued that the internet is affecting our brains - and the most tech-savvy people will benefit the most from this evolutionary change and end up sitting atop a new social order.Gary Small, a neuroscientist at UCLA in California who specializes in brain function, has found through studies that internet searching and text messaging has made brains more adept at filtering information and making snap decisions.But while technology can accelerate learning and boost creativity, it can have drawbacks as it can create Internet addicts whose only friends are virtual and has sparked a dramatic rise in Attention Deficit Disorder diagnoses.Small, however, argued that the people who will come out on top in the next generation will be those with a mixture of technological and social skills. Mob Violence, 'Fluid Morality' and Sociopathy

The NYT Magazine is running an article this weekend titled "Malwebolence," about internet 'trolls' who enjoy causing harm to others, either because it's just fun -- they speak of "the joy of disrupting another's emotional equilibrium" while "you chat with friends and laugh" -- or perhaps because they have the notion that they are helping others learn how to handle explosives by blowing them up in their faces. One troll says his passion is 'pushing peoples' buttons' and he "frames his acts of trolling as ... sociological inquiries into human behavior." He also says: "'It's not that I do this because I hate them. I do this because I'm trying to save them.'" It seems fairly obvious through the article that this particular troll is trying to save himself, as well, though it may be too late: "'Am I the bad guy? Am I the big horrible person who shattered someone's life with some information? No! This is life. Welcome to life. Everyone goes through it. I've been through horrible stuff, too.' 'Like what?' I asked. Sexual abuse, [he] said." At age 5 he was molested by his grandfather [his mother confirms this] and three other relatives.

The article's author, Mattathias Schwartz, asks his readers at one point:

"Does free speech tend to move toward the truth or away from it? When does it evolve into a better collective understanding? When does it collapse into the Babel of trolling, the pointless and eristic game of talking the other guy into crying 'uncle'? Is the effort to control what's said always a form of censorship, or might certain rules be compatible with our notions of free speech?"

Free speech may be one issue to consider; it's not what immediately interests me reading this article. My interest is primarily in the proliferation (or so it's asserted) of mob violence online, what motivates and triggers it, and how it proceeds. As Schwartz says, attempting to respond to his own free speech query:

"Why inflict anguish on a helpless stranger? It's tempting to blame technology, which increases the range of our communications while dehumanizing the recipients. ... But while technology reduces the social barriers that keep us from bedeviling strangers, it does not explain the initial trolling impulse. This seems to spring from something ugly -- a destructive human urge that many feel but few act upon, the ambient misanthropy that's a frequent ingredient of art, politics and, most of all, jokes. There's a lot of hate out there, and a lot to hate as well."

Online mob violence, imo, is no different from in-your-face mob violence except perhaps, as Schwartz points out, it's considerably facilitated by anonymity and breadth of coverage. But the motivations, the triggers, and the process are the same in either case.

That 'trolling' is highly mimetic and is often mob violence is evidenced several times in the article:

The Internet is "a mass medium for defining who we are to ourselves and to others." Yet another way to explore and express who we are, vs. everyone else, through blogging perhaps more than through message boards, at least as the boards are used by most people.

"Trolling has evolved [perhaps the wrong term] from ironic solo skit to vicious group hunt." "Technology, apparently, does more than harness the wisdom of the crowd. It can intensify its hatred as well."

The victims are seem as utterly deserving of their fate, complicit in it, inviting it -- "You, the troll says, are not worthy of my understanding; I, therefore, will do everything I can to confound you" -- as is shown in this interchange between a troll and Schwartz:

"'You have green hair,' he told me. 'Did you know that?'
"'No,' I said.
"'Why not?'
"'I look in the mirror. I see my hair is black.'
"'That’s uh, interesting. I guess you understand that you have green hair about as well as you understand that you're a terrible reporter.'
"'What do you mean? What did I do?'
"'That's a very interesting reaction,' [he] said. 'Why didn't you get so defensive when I said you had green hair?' "
If I were certain that I wasn't a terrible reporter, he explained, I would have laughed the suggestion off just as easily. The willingness of trolling 'victims' to be hurt by words, he argued, makes them complicit, and trolling will end as soon as we all get over it."

Another troll put it even more bluntly and graphically:

"'Trolling is basically Internet eugenics. ... I want everyone off the Internet. Bloggers are filth. They need to be destroyed. Blogging gives the illusion of participation to a bunch of retards. ... We need to put these people in the oven!'"

No one else is seen as innocent, therefore no one else is seen as a true victim and no one is seen as a perpetrator. Everyone else is seen as deserving of destruction at the hands of trolls, who, in some cases, see themselves as performing a meritorious service.

That same troll implied that the mob (or a segment of it) is ripe for a leader and is waiting for a sign:

"'We're waiting,' [he] said. 'We need someone to show us the way. The messiah.'
"'How do you know it's not you?' I asked.
"'If it were me, I would know,' he said. 'I would receive a sign.'
"Zeno of Elea, Socrates and Jesus, [he] said, are his all-time favorite trolls. He also identifies with Coyote and Loki, the trickster gods, and especially with Kali, the Hindu goddess of destruction."

Beyond the indications of mob violence and mimesis, there's also an indication of antisocial personality disorder (sociopathy) -- an individual personality disorder, quite apart from the group phenomenon of mob violence -- in some of their comments about what's right and wrong, though even these might be echoed (often not out loud) by 'normal' people. It's the rationale, the feelings (or lack thereof) and the destructive actions, unchecked by any sense of true compassion for others, that together paint a particularly disturbing and illuminating picture:

"I asked [one troll] whether a person is obliged to give food to a starving stranger. No, [he] argued; no one is entitled to our sympathy or empathy. We can choose to give or withhold them as we see fit. 'I can't push you into the fire,' he explained, 'but I can look at you while you're burning in the fire and not be required to help.' [Metaphorically, though, according to this article some trolls have pushed some people into the fire -- their actions, usually en masse, have contributed to the deaths, job losses and relationship losses of others. They haven't simply sat passively by. They've set the fire, fanned it and then watched others struggle and writhe. Examples in the article.]

Asked "Is there anything that can be done on the Internet that shouldn't be done?," he didn't have an answer.

Another troll justified his desire to "kill four [billion] of the world's six billion people in the most just way possible" with his fear that "we are headed for a Malthusian crisis." (He's the one who said he's waiting for a messiah.)

Schwartz ends the article by quoting some message board commenters trying to discern what makes people bad or good. "Finally," he says, someone types: "'I'd say empathy is probably a factor.'"

HyperHamlet is up and running. I saw an early version of this project presented at a conference in 2006, and its aims remain the same: it doesn't attempt to supply an edition in the sense of an editorial reconstruction, and it doesn't want to work backwards from the text. Instead, the project seeks to map the text forward, cataloguing references to Hamlet from all walks of life and culture. When I first heard about the project, I asked myself what cataloguing every reference to Hamlet ever could do for us. In Anthony Burgess's A clockwork orange the droogs are Alex's violent pals. Now we all get our kicks on the internet and look like meeting fewer and fewer people for real are we becoming a generation of un-socialised droogs, just as Gordon Brown is desperately trying to manufacture national allegiance?

A new report claims that British children are being 'raised online' spending at least 20 hours a week connected to the internet. In August 2007 Microsoft proudly put the figure at more like 34 hours. The IPPR report states that 57% of young people have come into contact with online porn. 117 videos featuring the term 'happy slap' were posted on YouTube last week, and 312 were posted as 'street fights'. Microsoft claim that internet use increases social interaction – but is this the kind they mean?

Just what does the availability on the internet of instant gratification of every kind do for tolerance? In the real world, gratification isn't instant. Things don't go to plan and people don't always behave predictably. How are today's kids learning to react?

Also this week, one third of teachers are reported as having been subjected to classroom violence, with 75% threatened by their pupils. Another report shows four times as many teachers finding knives on their pupils than in 2001, in spite of the increasing use of metal detectors in schools. Across the country, the quality of teaching is suffering as teachers struggle to cope with multilingual classes. In more than one in 20 schools, English is a minority language:

In the borough of Newham, nine out of 10 schools have a non-English first language majority. The same is true of a third of schools in Leicester and in Blackburn, and a quarter of schools in Birmingham.

Outside school, people are not mixing like they used to. Every community used to have a pub, church and post office at its centre. They were the hub of local life - places where we met new people and learned to get along. Now 2,500 more post offices are to close and in Langton Green in Kent:

Gone are three of the village's four pubs; gone are the two police houses; gone is the horticultural society; gone is one of the two grocery stores, one of the two butchers, the last dairy farm, the YMCA playing field, the doctor's surgery – all in recent memory – and now, gone is the post office. Gone too is the wildlife from the village pond, seen off by a new drainage system which draws in the oil and detritus from the road.

Publicans say that tradition and the fabric of society is being destroyed by the loss of four pubs per day across the country. Around one church per week is closed.

Another 2008 survey reports that 15% of people don't speak to any of their neighbours from one week to the next. And 65% said that in the future people will have more contact through the internet than in person:

"There's a real issue with people being dislocated from the communities where they live," said Ginny Lunn, the director of policy and development at the Prince's Trust. "Everybody needs to take responsibility for communities and make sure people aren't isolated, otherwise we could face a generation of people who will become unconnected from society."

Pundits say cash will solve the problem. The Government says things are improving. And L'Oreal says you're 'worth it'. At the grassroots, plenty of us are still trying, giving our time, building places like community orchards so that people can connect again. Margaret Thatcher's most memorable line was 'there's no such thing as society'. Don't let it come true.

"The FBI hunts down the most vicious criminals online," reads a half-page ad for the new thriller Untraceable, "but the most dangerous one is hunting them."I'll bet that in the world of American crime thrillers, the FBI hunts down criminals via Google searches. According to film and television, any and all information is available to us with a web browser and a couple of clever keystrokes. Computers never fail, except when they explode. On police/courtroom procedural dramas, often all it takes to catch a criminal is a simple search of a database of fingerprints, which never fails. And somehow, TV's fictional rendering of the Manhattan Special Victims Unit (Law and Order: SVU) is outfitted with gigantic hi-def flat screens that display information relevant to the case (a function served by simple marker-boards on the other two Law and Order series). Lawyers and court employees involved in jury selection have to worry about the CSI Effect because of the widespread belief that when it comes to criminal investigation, computers can do just about anything.No wonder today's college students think that Google and Wikipedia are all-powerful.

Access to Knowledge: The Place of Libraries and Books

Two articles on the related topic of libraries and access to knowledge:

From The Independent, Michael Savage asks "The Big Question: Does the decline in book lending spell the end for the public library?" He notes that figures just published show that the British "are taking out fewer books from libraries than we were 10 years ago. Library users in England borrowed just under 269 million books in the last financial year, according to official figures compiled by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy. That is down 34 per cent on the amount borrowed back in 1997."

It may not be that Brits have lost any interest in reading; in fact, "2007 was a record-breaking year in terms of the amount the British spent on a good read," with book sales up 6.2 per cent over 2006.

Savage suggests that factors involved in libraries' reduced book borrowing include lower book prices (cheaper than ever for people to just buy the books), comfier digs at bookstores than libraries, changes in social structure, and perhaps most likely, library patrons using the library for reasons other than borrowing books, as the number of library visits has remained roughly the same at least over the past 3 years.

Savage ends the column with the question "Do libraries still have a role in 21st-century Britain?" and answers it with some pros and cons.

A second column at Times Online, "Reference books? Give me Wikipedia" by Magnus Linklater, argues against Tara Brabazon, professor of Media Studies at the University of Brighton, who "has banned her own students from using Wikipedia or Google as research sources, and insists they read printed texts only. In a lecture, she argues that only thus will we produce the critical thinkers that the nation needs."

Linklater embraces "the new socialism" (a bit tongue in cheek) of "offering equality of information to everyone." He views students' lack of critical thinking as a function of "the way they have been taught to think -- and the way their written work is marked." He says that if students "learn that they have a gateway to knowledge unprecedented in the history of man, and that this opens up access to sources of information that they might never have glimpsed as they struggled with poorly equipped libraries, unhelpful staff and unimaginative lecturers, then they will realise that, far from blunting curiosity, it sharpens it."

In his haste to praise quick, easy, and often very good information found online, Linklater, it seems to me, makes the common error of exaggerating or taking as universal the negative aspects of that which she seeks to argue against -- in this case, in part, libraries. I agree with his argument that Wikipedia and other online sources offer a great opportunity for finding information to anyone with internet access and the ability to read the screen, and I agree that critical thinking is not a function of the medium but rather of being taught how to use the medium and the content. I also value the library, and the librarian, many of whom are excellent discerners of knowledge and are willing to share their insight with library users.

At rhetorically speaking, Scottish blogger 'bookdrunk' thinks that Linklater misunderstands or misinterprets Brabazon's point and essentially argues against a straw man: "Tara Brabazon isn't opposed to wikipedia or google in principal, but [is] concerned that the ease with which information is made available has not been matched with a critical appreciation of different sources. The revelation that what you read online in or in a newspaper can't be taken at face-value (or that a columnist might completely misrepresent someone's views) is probably not news ..." He (?) quotes Brabazon: "We need to teach our students the interpretative skills first before we teach them the technological skills."

Why not teach interpretive skills before, as, and after technological and reading skills are taught?

An essay in this Sunday's New York Times Magazine: "In Defense of Lurking," by Virginia Heffernan.Heffernan praises the practice of wandering from message board to message board without posting (or worrying about how to compose a post that won't be attacked as newbielike, trollish, or uninformed), of "read[ing] without writing; tak[ing] without giving." Americans are wracked with guilt over leisure time; we have to reconfigure everything as work, she writes, to the point that even readers of novels have to convince themselves that they're learning something, that they're somehow being productive. I'd write more, but I'm exhausted from the second-qualifying-exam crunch. To paraphrase a friend and fellow graduate student, some days blogging feels too much like homework. Let's go a-flaneuring through the Interweb of Unproductivity.

A new Search Engine for Environmental Datas

following the IEEE Committee on Earth Observation, a new search engine portal and dataclearinghouse for environmental datas, including "not just datas from Earth-observing satellites, but also terrestrial sensors datas, population figures, and regional health and ecosystem information" should be launched next November with the GEOSS (Global Earth Observation Systems of Systems) program. This technology will benefit the entire community, creating a social geo referential, that looks a bit more advanced than the common Google Earth Mashups.

New currency for space travelers

Scientists have come up with a new currency designed to be used by inter-planetary travellers.It is called the Quasi Universal Intergalactic Denomination, or Quid.It is designed to withstand the stresses of space travel and has no sharp edges or chemicals that could hurt space tourists. "None of the existing payment systems we use on earth - like cash, credit or debit cards - could be used in space," said Professor George Fraser from the University of Leicester."Anything with sharp edges, like coins, would be a risk to astronauts while the chips and magnetic strips used in our cards on Earth would be damaged beyond repair by cosmic radiation," he added.

Selon l'étude Nielsen/Netratings pour l'Association de la presse américaine, plus de 59 millions de personnes (soit 37.6% des internautes actifs) ont visité l'un des sites de la presse américaine, au cours du premier trimestre 2007.

La croissance est de 5.3% comparée à la même periode de l'année dernière.

Ces sites ont totalisé près de 3 milliards de pages vues par mois, contre 2.7 milliards il y a un an.

Les sites internet ont ainsi contribué à 13.7% à l'augmentation de l'audience auprès des lecteurs de 25 à 34 ans. La part de l'internet est de 9.2% pour les plus jeunes lecteurs (18-25 ans).

Le temps de lecture sur internet s'accroît dans le même temps, pour atteindre 45 minutes par mois (+ 11.5%).

Area Man Consults Internet Whenever Possible

So he opens up mapquest.com, enters our address and the restaurant's, and within 10 minutes, he had complete door-to-door directions printed out.'

"'That's right,' Larry said. 'And she wanted to get a pen and write down the directions by hand.'"

Well, exactly.

Except that Larry is a little slow, and if you read further into the article, inefficient. AOL? Browsing Yahoo's categories? Really.

I have an abridged OED 4 paces from my chair, but when I want a definition, I type the word to be defined and the word 'etymology' into Google (or just go straight to the Online Etymology Dictionary).

I have almost 50 cookbooks, plus three index card containers of recipes, but I usually find recipes online now, especially when I have two or three ingredients I want to use and wonder what I can make with them.

I have dozens of books of quotes, but I usually look up snatches of half-remembered quotes, songs, and poetry online, because of the flexibility of searching.

I have plenty of Bibles and concordances, but I almost always look online (usually at Oremus) for chapter and verse.

Phone numbers and addresses? Online, always.

Directions, maps, locating a city or country visually? Online. When tornadoes struck Florida last week, and I wondered if my dad's town was affected, I didn't run for the atlas, in the next room, and I didn't call him. I did Google image searches for "central Florida" and "Florida map," clicked on the resulting maps (here and here), and found his town and its relationship to the counties affected by the tornadoes (he wasn't closer than 150 miles). When I called him the next night, he said he was surprised to hear from me since he thought I knew that his town was no where near the tornado path. Probably would have been easier and quicker to consult a print atlas if we kept ours in a convenient place (we don't), but it feels more fun to me to do research this way.

Help for problems with the cell phone, digital camera, computer, software? Online. Lots of appliance manuals and tips from other users are available. I learned how to program numbers into an old but rather complex phone we got at Goodwill by finding online help for it.

Conversion of kilometres into miles, grams into ounces, euros into dollars? Online. (Very quickly, thanks to Google's calculator feature.)

Shopping (except for grocery and drugstore)? 90% is online for us now. Car parts (we had a radiator and a gas tank shipped ... you might not be surprised to learn that not a lot of states will allow shipping of vehicle gas tanks!), car manuals, clothes (eBay as well as other online retailers), most of our books (Amazon, Alibris, Politics & Prose), stamps (Stamps.com and Zazzle), checks, dog toys, some food, flowers, CDs, DVDs, household goods (eBay again), travel arrangements, and so on.
