Colon Cancer Screenings Still Too Low: Study

Despite highly publicized education campaigns and widespread agreement about the importance of colorectal cancer screening, only 61 percent of Americans who should be screened do so, new research finds.Rates for minorities, the uninsured and other vulnerable groups are lower still, with only 22 percent of lower-income people served by a "safety net" health system in Texas being screened.Using data from a health system in Tarrant County, Tex., researchers identified 20,416 men and women ages 54 to 75 who were eligible for colorectal cancer screening.The Tarrant County Hospital District, which includes Forth Worth, Texas, is a safety net health system that serves 155,000 individuals a year, many of them uninsured or Medicaid recipients.About 15 percent of the patients lived below the poverty line. The median household income was $35,419. Most patients were either black or Hispanic; nearly 20 percent reported a primary language other than English.Patients most likely to get screened included those who saw a doctor regularly or who had health insurance, said Dr. Samir Gupta, assistant professor in the department of internal medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center."Once you controlled for those variables, the screening rate was essentially zero," Gupta said.About 40 percent of those in the study had health insurance, including Medicare and Medicaid, while another 40 percent had medical coverage through their connection to the safety net system. Twenty percent were uninsured.Those with insurance were almost three times as likely to be screened, and those who saw the doctor regularly were nearly four times as likely to be screened. Women were slightly more likely than men to be screened. Hispanics were slightly more likely to be screened than whites.The study appears in the September issue of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.Karen Glanz, a professor of medicine and nursing at the University of Pennsylvania and an editorial board member of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, said the study documents some of the barriers to colorectal cancer screening."The idea that colorectal cancer screening rates are too low is not a new idea, but this is one of the first to document it in a specific population," Glanz said. "Access to care clearly has consequences, and any talk of health care reform needs to address proven prevention measures like screening."Low-income, uninsured women have access to other screenings through the U.S. Centers for Disease Control's National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program.While good for breast and cervical cancer screening efforts, many other types of cancers don't benefit from such a comprehensive screening approach."Theoretically, the same model could be applied to colorectal cancer, but do we want to keep passing legislation for programs that target specific types of cancer, or could we provide more broad access to health care so we can make a serious and coordinated effort at prevention?" Gupta said. "That's the question that needs answering."Colorectal cancer, which kills nearly 50,000 Americans a year, is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States after lung cancer. Program Curbs Teen Substance Abuse, Delinquency

Substance abuse and delinquent behavior among teens was significantly reduced in communities that tried a university-designed prevention program, a new study found.The Communities That Care prevention system, employed in a dozen small and mid-size towns in seven states, slashed alcohol use by eighth graders by nearly a quarter, binge drinking by 37 percent and smokeless tobacco use almost in half, according to the findings to be published Sept. 7 in Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine."This study shows we can prevent adolescent risk behaviors community wide by using this system," lead author and co-developer of the program, J. David Hawkins, founding director of the Social Development Research Group at the University of Washington in Seattle, said in a university news release. Municipalities in the prevention program were instructed on risk factors that could lead to local substance abuse and behavioral problems among teens and then trained in how to run effective programs for managing these threats. Each community was paired with another of similar size and makeup that did not receive the training to compare success at handing the issues. In tracking more than 4,400 teens, the ongoing five-year study found that use of cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, inhalants, marijuana, alcohol, prescription drugs and other illicit drugs dropped over time. Most notably, binge drinking -- consumption of at least five alcoholic beverages in one sitting -- was lower among eighth graders in the communities using the program than those who did not adopt it. "We know kids who drink that way are at risk for developing alcohol abuse and dependence later. This binge drinking is occurring when children are 13 and 14 years of age, so we are actually preventing the likelihood of later alcohol problems. This is very important from a public health standpoint," Hawkins said. Teens in the communities' program also committed 31 percent fewer acts of delinquent behavior, such as stealing or vandalism, and were notably less likely to begin smoking, drinking or causing trouble in the community between the fifth and eighth grades.

Scheduling a prime daytime slot to undergo an orthopedic procedure may lower your risk of an unplanned follow-up surgery later on, a new study has found. The study, published in the September issue of The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, found little difference otherwise for healing, recovery time and major complication rates between certain orthopedic surgeries done during the day (between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m.) and those done after hours (4 p.m. to 6 a.m.). "Although everyone wants to be treated immediately, it may be in a patient's best interest to wait until morning. The reality is that the on-call night surgical team may not be well rested, as it is likely they had just finished a normal day shift," study lead author Dr. William M. Ricci, chief of the Orthopaedic Trauma Service at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, said in a news release issued by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. The study of 203 surgeries to repair either a fractured thigh or shin bone found a higher incidence of follow-up surgery to remove painful hardware (often a supportive rod called an intramedullary nail fixation that was placed to stabilize the broken bone) in the after-hours patients than the daytime patients -- 27 percent versus 3 percent, respectively. "The results of the study suggest that the system is working fairly well and it is not always best to rush a patient to the OR in the middle of the night. Naturally, when the medical condition is emergent and time is a critical factor, immediate surgery should proceed regardless of time of day," Ricci said in the news release. "For non-emergent fracture care, sufficient daytime resources should be made available to avoid unnecessary night-time surgery," he added.

Depressed Teens Continue to Suffer

Mildly depressed teenagers are more likely to have major depression, anxiety disorders and eating disorders as adults, a new study suggests.In 1983, researchers interviewed 755 teenagers who were about age 16 about mood, anxiety and eating disorders, disruptive behaviors and substance abuse.About 8 percent were found to have minor depression, defined as feeling down, losing interest in normal activities, and having insomnia or difficulty concentrating for two weeks or more. The symptoms of minor depression are similar to, but less severe, than those of a major depressive episode.Researchers followed up with the teens when they were in their early 20s and in their early 30s, and found that teenagers who had had minor depression were significantly more likely to have major depression in adulthood.Depressed teens were also more likely to have anxiety and eating disorders as adults.The study appears in the September issue of the British Journal of Psychiatry."The study findings emphasize the importance of providing needed assistance and support to youths who have two or more persistent symptoms of depression," said Jeffrey Johnson of the department of psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center and the New York State Psychiatric Institute.Based on the findings, researchers could not say if mild depression in adolescence contributes to the development of major depression later in life, or if the mild depression is an early phase of major depressive disorder.The data used in the study was from the Children in the Community Study, a longitudinal study of health issues in adolescence and their impact on mental health in adulthood.

For dieters, the benefits of exercise may go beyond calories burned, a new study suggests.Exercise may ward off weight gain after dieting by reducing appetite, preventing fat cells from accumulating and by prompting the body to burn calories from fat before burning calories from carbohydrates, reducing feelings of hunger, research finds.The study was published recently in the American Journal of Physiology -- Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology.Researchers put obesity-prone rats on a high-fat diet for 16 weeks, during which time they ate whatever they wanted and did not exercise.Later, rats were put on a low-fat, low-calorie diet to shed 14 percent of their body weight. Rats were then kept on the diet for eight weeks to maintain their lower weight.During the maintenance phase, half the rats exercised on a treadmill while the other half were sedentary.Afterward, rats were permitted to eat as much low-fat food as they wanted. One group continued to exercise while the other didn't.After two months, the rats that exercised regained less weight, burned more fat in the morning and more carbohydrates later in the day, accumulated fewer fat cells and gained less abdominal fat compared to the sedentary rats.Since less energy is needed to store fat than to store carbohydrates, burning carbohydrates first burns less calories overall, according to researchers from the University of Colorado Denver.In rats that exercised, burning fat first may also help to dampen feelings of hunger.Exercise also protected against the increase in fat cells that often occurs when weight is regained. While the sedentary rats accumulated new fat cells soon after they started regaining the weight, the rats that exercised didn't.New fat cells increase fat storage capacity in the abdomen, according to the study. The increase in fat cells may also help explain why sedentary rats ended up heavier than even before they dieted.Though weight gain seems to be clear-cut -- when more calories are consumed than calories burned, you gain weight -- research is showing that a person's body weight, appetite and metabolism are determined by an interplay of physiological, psychological, cognitive and lifestyle factors.Previous research found that many dieters regain weight because calorie restriction can cause physiological signals, such as hunger, to go into overdrive, triggering overeating and weight gain.Exercise may help in maintaining weight loss by altering what's known as "defended" weight, or the body weight each person's physiology and metabolism seeks to maintain, and may also make diets easier to follow, according to the study.The study also calls into question a widely accepted belief that the number of fat cells cannot be altered by dietary or lifestyle changes, researchers said.

Fruit may contain more beneficial antioxidants than previously thought, a new international study says. A study done on apples, peaches and nectarines found these fruits contain up to five times more polyphenols, chemical substances believed to contain disease-fighting properties, than scientists suspected. Researchers at the Institute of Food Research in Norwich, England, looked at previously ignored nonextractable polyphenols, ones in fruit cells that cannot be broken down and measured as easily as the "extractable polyphenols" that researchers usually study."These polyphenols need to be treated with acid to extract them from the cell walls of fruit in the lab," one of the researchers, Sara Arranz from the Spanish Council for Scientific Research in Madrid, said in a news release issued by the food research institute."If non-extractable polyphenols are not considered, the levels of beneficial polyphenols such as proanthocyanidins, ellagic acid and catechin are substantially underestimated."

Sometimes the decision where to live is quite easy to answer, but then finding something to live there is much harder!For sure, there are certain areas in the world that are much more lovely than others and everyone elses grass doesn´t only seem to be greener - it´s also hard to settle on it ;)... So what choice do we have? Surely, we can search newspapers, the internet etc, but this can be very frustrating as the numbers of offers in the fashionabely `hip` areas mostly coverges to zero or the accomodations offered are simply not affordable.Aditionally, one doesn´t really want to spend ages on viewing the ´wrong`appartments!To be true, sometimes realtors can help us saving both: time and nerves. I know, it seems to be strange paying for something that could be done by oneself, too, but sometimes, there´s simply now way out! These people know the `good`adresses that you will never ever find in any newspaper advertisment. They can search the market for offers that are exactly meeting one´s expectations while one may go on spending time on the golf course, in the shopping centre, or simply have some time for recreation.For sure, it is a service that must be paid for, but to speak frankly: there are so many services one pays for on every single day, without hardly thinking about it, so why not use some help for the hard task of finding a new home?!One´s home is one´s castle and therefore it should fit as perfectly as possible!

Moving from Zen to BT

Well, it looks as though I'm finally moving ISP from Zen back to BT broadband, as I just called Zen for a MAC code.

It's a shame, really, as Zen has a far better reputation for service and support than BT, but the problem of wireless interference is a constant and annoying problem.

Plus BT are offering mobile broadband with their new broadband packages, and free BT openzone minutes, which will be very useful for business travel.

The caveat is that the pricing on the BT website is quite misleading, as those shown only apply to certain exchanges (apparently) plus they include 24-month pricing, which can take as much as 25%-30% off the 12-month price (so Option 3 is £45+VAT over 24 months, or £30+VAT over 12 months).

Still, at least I know from experience that the BT router supplied is far less susceptible to wireless intereference.

Which is very important, because if I couldn't get decent business broadband, I'd have to consider more serious broadband connection packages, such as a leased line or custom business SDSL, both of which are priced higher than normal mass-market broadband packages.

In the meantime, I can only hope the move to BT goes smoothly, and that I don't end up getting caught up in their cold automated support process - as BT customer service is not renown for being good.

Our internet connection is getting worse. It's so vexing. I don't have any intention to stay in front of the computer for more than three hours. I just want to catch up with Prison Break season 4. I hope this trouble will be fixed soon.

If the business is just about plain research, the internet is generous. But if you're looking or trying to open anything that has complex language or whatever procedures, don't bother. Or if you do, make sure you have plenty of patience.

Mob Violence, 'Fluid Morality' and Sociopathy

The NYT Magazine is running an article this weekend titled "Malwebolence," about internet 'trolls' who enjoy causing harm to others, either because it's just fun -- they speak of "the joy of disrupting another's emotional equilibrium" while "you chat with friends and laugh" -- or perhaps because they have the notion that they are helping others learn how to handle explosives by blowing them up in their faces. One troll says his passion is 'pushing peoples' buttons' and he "frames his acts of trolling as ... sociological inquiries into human behavior." He also says: "'It's not that I do this because I hate them. I do this because I'm trying to save them.'" It seems fairly obvious through the article that this particular troll is trying to save himself, as well, though it may be too late: "'Am I the bad guy? Am I the big horrible person who shattered someone's life with some information? No! This is life. Welcome to life. Everyone goes through it. I've been through horrible stuff, too.' 'Like what?' I asked. Sexual abuse, [he] said." At age 5 he was molested by his grandfather [his mother confirms this] and three other relatives.

The article's author, Mattathias Schwartz, asks his readers at one point:

"Does free speech tend to move toward the truth or away from it? When does it evolve into a better collective understanding? When does it collapse into the Babel of trolling, the pointless and eristic game of talking the other guy into crying 'uncle'? Is the effort to control what's said always a form of censorship, or might certain rules be compatible with our notions of free speech?"

Free speech may be one issue to consider; it's not what immediately interests me reading this article. My interest is primarily in the proliferation (or so it's asserted) of mob violence online, what motivates and triggers it, and how it proceeds. As Schwartz says, attempting to respond to his own free speech query:

"Why inflict anguish on a helpless stranger? It's tempting to blame technology, which increases the range of our communications while dehumanizing the recipients. ... But while technology reduces the social barriers that keep us from bedeviling strangers, it does not explain the initial trolling impulse. This seems to spring from something ugly -- a destructive human urge that many feel but few act upon, the ambient misanthropy that's a frequent ingredient of art, politics and, most of all, jokes. There's a lot of hate out there, and a lot to hate as well."

Online mob violence, imo, is no different from in-your-face mob violence except perhaps, as Schwartz points out, it's considerably facilitated by anonymity and breadth of coverage. But the motivations, the triggers, and the process are the same in either case.

That 'trolling' is highly mimetic and is often mob violence is evidenced several times in the article:

The Internet is "a mass medium for defining who we are to ourselves and to others." Yet another way to explore and express who we are, vs. everyone else, through blogging perhaps more than through message boards, at least as the boards are used by most people.

"Trolling has evolved [perhaps the wrong term] from ironic solo skit to vicious group hunt." "Technology, apparently, does more than harness the wisdom of the crowd. It can intensify its hatred as well."

The victims are seem as utterly deserving of their fate, complicit in it, inviting it -- "You, the troll says, are not worthy of my understanding; I, therefore, will do everything I can to confound you" -- as is shown in this interchange between a troll and Schwartz:

"'You have green hair,' he told me. 'Did you know that?'
"'No,' I said.
"'Why not?'
"'I look in the mirror. I see my hair is black.'
"'That’s uh, interesting. I guess you understand that you have green hair about as well as you understand that you're a terrible reporter.'
"'What do you mean? What did I do?'
"'That's a very interesting reaction,' [he] said. 'Why didn't you get so defensive when I said you had green hair?' "
If I were certain that I wasn't a terrible reporter, he explained, I would have laughed the suggestion off just as easily. The willingness of trolling 'victims' to be hurt by words, he argued, makes them complicit, and trolling will end as soon as we all get over it."

Another troll put it even more bluntly and graphically:

"'Trolling is basically Internet eugenics. ... I want everyone off the Internet. Bloggers are filth. They need to be destroyed. Blogging gives the illusion of participation to a bunch of retards. ... We need to put these people in the oven!'"

No one else is seen as innocent, therefore no one else is seen as a true victim and no one is seen as a perpetrator. Everyone else is seen as deserving of destruction at the hands of trolls, who, in some cases, see themselves as performing a meritorious service.

That same troll implied that the mob (or a segment of it) is ripe for a leader and is waiting for a sign:

"'We're waiting,' [he] said. 'We need someone to show us the way. The messiah.'
"'How do you know it's not you?' I asked.
"'If it were me, I would know,' he said. 'I would receive a sign.'
"Zeno of Elea, Socrates and Jesus, [he] said, are his all-time favorite trolls. He also identifies with Coyote and Loki, the trickster gods, and especially with Kali, the Hindu goddess of destruction."

Beyond the indications of mob violence and mimesis, there's also an indication of antisocial personality disorder (sociopathy) -- an individual personality disorder, quite apart from the group phenomenon of mob violence -- in some of their comments about what's right and wrong, though even these might be echoed (often not out loud) by 'normal' people. It's the rationale, the feelings (or lack thereof) and the destructive actions, unchecked by any sense of true compassion for others, that together paint a particularly disturbing and illuminating picture:

"I asked [one troll] whether a person is obliged to give food to a starving stranger. No, [he] argued; no one is entitled to our sympathy or empathy. We can choose to give or withhold them as we see fit. 'I can't push you into the fire,' he explained, 'but I can look at you while you're burning in the fire and not be required to help.' [Metaphorically, though, according to this article some trolls have pushed some people into the fire -- their actions, usually en masse, have contributed to the deaths, job losses and relationship losses of others. They haven't simply sat passively by. They've set the fire, fanned it and then watched others struggle and writhe. Examples in the article.]

Asked "Is there anything that can be done on the Internet that shouldn't be done?," he didn't have an answer.

Another troll justified his desire to "kill four [billion] of the world's six billion people in the most just way possible" with his fear that "we are headed for a Malthusian crisis." (He's the one who said he's waiting for a messiah.)

Schwartz ends the article by quoting some message board commenters trying to discern what makes people bad or good. "Finally," he says, someone types: "'I'd say empathy is probably a factor.'"

"The FBI hunts down the most vicious criminals online," reads a half-page ad for the new thriller Untraceable, "but the most dangerous one is hunting them."I'll bet that in the world of American crime thrillers, the FBI hunts down criminals via Google searches. According to film and television, any and all information is available to us with a web browser and a couple of clever keystrokes. Computers never fail, except when they explode. On police/courtroom procedural dramas, often all it takes to catch a criminal is a simple search of a database of fingerprints, which never fails. And somehow, TV's fictional rendering of the Manhattan Special Victims Unit (Law and Order: SVU) is outfitted with gigantic hi-def flat screens that display information relevant to the case (a function served by simple marker-boards on the other two Law and Order series). Lawyers and court employees involved in jury selection have to worry about the CSI Effect because of the widespread belief that when it comes to criminal investigation, computers can do just about anything.No wonder today's college students think that Google and Wikipedia are all-powerful.

Access to Knowledge: The Place of Libraries and Books

From The Independent, Michael Savage asks "The Big Question: Does the decline in book lending spell the end for the public library?" He notes that figures just published show that the British "are taking out fewer books from libraries than we were 10 years ago. Library users in England borrowed just under 269 million books in the last financial year, according to official figures compiled by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy. That is down 34 per cent on the amount borrowed back in 1997."

It may not be that Brits have lost any interest in reading; in fact, "2007 was a record-breaking year in terms of the amount the British spent on a good read," with book sales up 6.2 per cent over 2006.

Savage suggests that factors involved in libraries' reduced book borrowing include lower book prices (cheaper than ever for people to just buy the books), comfier digs at bookstores than libraries, changes in social structure, and perhaps most likely, library patrons using the library for reasons other than borrowing books, as the number of library visits has remained roughly the same at least over the past 3 years.

Savage ends the column with the question "Do libraries still have a role in 21st-century Britain?" and answers it with some pros and cons.

A second column at Times Online, "Reference books? Give me Wikipedia" by Magnus Linklater, argues against Tara Brabazon, professor of Media Studies at the University of Brighton, who "has banned her own students from using Wikipedia or Google as research sources, and insists they read printed texts only. In a lecture, she argues that only thus will we produce the critical thinkers that the nation needs."

Linklater embraces "the new socialism" (a bit tongue in cheek) of "offering equality of information to everyone." He views students' lack of critical thinking as a function of "the way they have been taught to think -- and the way their written work is marked." He says that if students "learn that they have a gateway to knowledge unprecedented in the history of man, and that this opens up access to sources of information that they might never have glimpsed as they struggled with poorly equipped libraries, unhelpful staff and unimaginative lecturers, then they will realise that, far from blunting curiosity, it sharpens it."

In his haste to praise quick, easy, and often very good information found online, Linklater, it seems to me, makes the common error of exaggerating or taking as universal the negative aspects of that which she seeks to argue against -- in this case, in part, libraries. I agree with his argument that Wikipedia and other online sources offer a great opportunity for finding information to anyone with internet access and the ability to read the screen, and I agree that critical thinking is not a function of the medium but rather of being taught how to use the medium and the content. The Gender Genie purports to predict, with 80% accuracy, the gender of the author of any text inputted into a form. (Tip of the something-or-other to squib, who linked to this toy earlier this week.)It supposedly works according to an algorithm developed by a pair of computational linguists. The program searches for the following:feminine keywords: with, if, not, where, be, when, your, her, we, should, and, me, myself, hers, was.masculine keywords: around, what, more, are, as, who, below, is, these, the, a, at, it, many, said, above, to. So, the "Gender Genie" seems to hinge on the idea that women use conditionals and talk about themselves more often than men. There have indeed been studies that show that women -- for cultural, not biological reasons -- tend to make their statements sound less definite (with "if"s, "maybe"s, "likely"s, vocalized pauses, etc) and use personal pronouns more often when speaking. Does this algorithm (perhaps incorrectly) assume that women exhibit the same patterns in their writing? A columnist with The Guardian was surprised to find that the Gender Genie identified all but one of the paper's female columnists as male, yet it "correctly" identified all of the male columnists. In the interest of self-reflexivity, the Gender Genie identifies this post as having been written by a man, apparently because (I'm not kidding) I used the word "the" seventeen times.

Selon l'étude Nielsen/Netratings pour l'Association de la presse américaine, plus de 59 millions de personnes (soit 37.6% des internautes actifs) ont visité l'un des sites de la presse américaine, au cours du premier trimestre 2007.

La croissance est de 5.3% comparée à la même periode de l'année dernière.

Ces sites ont totalisé près de 3 milliards de pages vues par mois, contre 2.7 milliards il y a un an.

Les sites internet ont ainsi contribué à 13.7% à l'augmentation de l'audience auprès des lecteurs de 25 à 34 ans. La part de l'internet est de 9.2% pour les plus jeunes lecteurs (18-25 ans).

Le temps de lecture sur internet s'accroît dans le même temps, pour atteindre 45 minutes par mois (+ 11.5%).

Global venture capital investment in Web 2.0 companies jumped to $844 million in 2006

Venture capitalists continued to favor the innovative activity of Web 2.0 companies last year, as $844.4 million was directed into 167 deals in 2006, more than twice as much money and nearly twice as many deals as occurred in 2005. According to new research by Ernst & Young/Dow Jones VentureOne Data.

Most of the growth remains centered in companies based in the US and Europe. The US dominated the Web 2.0 market, with 126 deals and $682.7 million invested, an 83% increase in deals from 2005 and a 136% increase in capital. San Francisco Bay Area was the busiest region in the US for Web 2.0 deals and was home to more than half of all financings in 2006.

Venture capital funds invested $100.5 million in 20 European Web 2.0 startups in 2006, up from four deals in 2005. The amount invested in Europe is more than a 200% increase from 2005. China posted 21 Web 2.0 deals, the same number that occurred in China in 2005. Investment declined by 26% to US$61.3 million.

Israel had two venture-financed Web 2.0 deals in 2006 and $22 million invested, a jump from one deal and only $1 million invested the year before. In July 2006, the Israeli Web 2.0 video entertainment firm, MetaCafe, has completed a second financing round, raising $15 million from Benchmark Capital and Excel Partners. In December 2006, enterprise-grade project management services provider Clarizen closed a $7 million round of financing from Benchmark Capital and Carmel Ventures. The research did not include the $2 million funding round of social content sharing company eSnips from Greylock Partners and Gemini Israel Funds.

"Web 2.0 is certainly a very fast-growing segment of the overall venture capital market right now. However, based on the median size of Web 2.0 deals and the conservative level of pre-money valuations for these companies, the data does not indicate that we are entering bubble territory," said Stephen Harmston, Director of Global Research for VentureOne. "Rather, what we are seeing is robust investment activity aimed at a still emerging business area."

The median pre-money valuation for a Web 2.0 company in 2006 was $6 million for both US based companies and worldwide. The median size of a Web 2.0 deal on a global basis was $5 million in 2006, an increase from the $3.3 million median the year before. The median size of a financing round was also $5 million in the US and China, but was actually higher in Europe last year at $6 million.

"The Internet has impacted every sector from media to retail to hospitality and consumer products. Now through Web 2.0 offerings, the Internet is having a profound influence on the way we share, collaborate and interact socially, not just in developed markets but also in fast growing emerging markets," indicated Gil Forer, Global Director of Ernst & Young's Venture Capital Advisory Group. "From the investor perspective, the low capital requirements, potential high return and the faster time from development to revenue are the primary drivers of the increase in venture capital investment in the Web 2.0 segment. In addition, success stories such as YouTube have had a positive impact both on entrepreneurs and investors."
