When a customer of First Missouri State Bank recovered a zip-top bag of cash he'd misplaced during the ice storm last winter and the flooding in March, he got an unpleasant surprise. The vinyl bag had been left in a wooden desk, unzipped, and he told Michelle Johns, manager of the Jackson branch, that it had been damaged by rodents. He brought in the bag in August to see if anything could be done. When she and employees Cristal McCoy, Wendy Aufdenberg and Jamie Koch dumped out the contents of the bag on the bank's long counter, most of the bills were mutilated beyond recognition and littered with bird feathers and rodent feces.Federal policy dictates that both serial numbers, in the top right corner and the bottom left, are needed to get credit for the entire amount of the bill, so the employees set about the task of piecing together the shredded cash.The four women pieced together as many serial numbers as they could and came up with $1,000 — the amount the customer believed he'd had in the bag. The federal mint requested all of the contents of the bag the money had been in, so everything — the torn money, feces and feathers — were shipped to the mint, where it can be examined, Johns said.The mint will then issue the customer a check for the exact amount the torn money is worth. Occasionally a bank customer will come in with half a bill they found or accidentally ripped to see if it can be redeemed, Johns said, but she's never seen anything like the bag of mouse-eaten money.

IRS Spends Millions to Tell You the Check is Almost in the Mail

"'At a cost of nearly $42 million, the IRS wants you to know: Your check is almost in the mail.

"'The Internal Revenue Service is spending the money on letters to alert taxpayers to expect rebate checks as part of the economic stimulus plan.

"'The notices are going out this month to an estimated 130 million households who filed returns for the 2006 tax year, at a cost of $41.8 million, IRS spokesman John Lipold confirmed.

"'That works out to about 32 cents to print, process and mail each letter. ...'"

"Why spend this money? The story quoted Keith Hennessey, director of the president's National Economic Council:

"'"Any time you do something as a government tens of millions of times, there is ample room for people to get confused. And so if you're going to have tens of millions of taxpayers getting checks, you want to get the information out so that you have as few people as possible confused about what's happening, they understand what's coming, and it reduces the number of incoming requests that IRS and Treasury have to figure out how to deal with it," said Hennessey.'"

If we take the NEC president's explanation at face value (some don't), the rationale seems vague and flawed to me. I'd like to know how many people don't already know they're going to get a "stimulus plan" check, how many people would be confused if they got a check from the IRS that, say, included a slip of paper in that envelope explaining it, and how many people who don't know and who would be confused to receive the check will actually open, read and understand the pre-explanation of the check. (To answer the first unknown, there's probably a Pew or Gallup poll out there that's already got the numbers. An ABC poll conducted a month ago asked whether people think the stimulus plan rebate is a good idea or not.)

Would it cost more or less than $42 million for the IRS and/or Treasury to add a brief explanation of the stimulus plan check mailing to its automated phone line, for those who are confused and who want answers before they deposit their checks? What about if the IRS phone number and a link to this IRS website page -- which explains why we're getting the checks -- were included on the checks or on a slip in the envelope with the check?

I guess it's really too much to expect that the refunds could be processed along with the tax returns.

(Of course, there are worse uses of money. ... But at least some folks truly believed the war would cost less, be beneficial to suffering people, and rid the world of terrorists.)

But suppose that illicit income is a bit larger. Once you've got more than a few hundred dollars a week--more than can be conveniently hidden in your ordinary cash expenses--you've got a problem. Second, you need to make it reappear in some gradual fashion that doesn't bring it to the attention of whoever you're trying to hide it from.Disappearing the moneyThe easiest way to disappear the money, especially if it's already cash (as opposed to, let's say, silver bullion or a winning lottery ticket) is to just stash it in a safety deposit box. You can raise your standard of living modestly. Alternatively, you could increase the amount that's going into your 401(k) and then use the cash to keep your standard of living about the same--gradually turning the hidden money into above-board money.If you've got the money overseas somewhere, bring it back in some way that makes it legit. The easiest would be to create an overseas company that then hires you to do something. You do whatever it is and send an invoice whenever you want some cash. You can also reverse the invoice scam that let you get the money overseas in the first place--now you under-pay (or over-bill), while making up the difference out of your foreign bank account. A third option is a fake loan where you "borrow" the money and then simply fail to pay the money back.Instant disappear-reappear cyclesIf you can't wait to reappear the money gradually, and the amount involved isn't too big, you can always use a simple casino scam. Go to a casino and buy some chips. Do a little low-risk gambling. (For example, bet each chip, one at a time, on red. Do that 20 or 30 times and you'll have about the same amount you started with.) Get a few more chips and repeat. Play a few different games (blackjack, craps, slots). Ideally, go to several different casinos and repeat the whole process there. Eventually, cash in all your chips and go home with a story about how you won a bunch of money at roulette. Pay taxes on your winnings.Laws InvolvedThere are lots of laws against money laundering as a general category and against specific techniques used in money laundering.If your income is already illegal, breaking one more law may not expose you to much additional risk, but it might, and it might give the government a case that they can prove, rather than one they can't.You're required to report cash or other bearer instruments (travelers checks, for example, but not gold coins or checks payable to a specific individual) that you carry into or out of the US. Similarly, banks are required to report large transactions (and to keep records of smaller ones).If you have a foreign bank account, you're required to report it on your taxes each year. Also, if your foreign investments make any income, you're required to pay taxes on it each year (not just when you bring the money back).Every time you don't declare the income, don't pay the tax due, lie on a form, or fail to file a required form, you're committing a crime.All these money laundering crimes have large fines and long prison sentences. Well, actually, it's about the lack of cigarettes. Nearly a week without and it's been my best quit yet. Just hope it continues.

I am saving money, I don't feel as sick as I did. Oh, those cigs I had last week! Ahhh. I can understand the first one tasting ok but why did I carry on, even when they made me feel ill?

why did I buy 10 more? I just can't fathom it out.

Maybe as I have said before, it did me good in a strange sort of way. I don't think of them all the time, I don't want one now. I think those 20 really put me off. Maybe now I will never smoke again.

I really hope so.

my boss keeps giving me money.

hey dont get me wrong. am not complaining. but i feel it's a little bit weird tho. for 2 consecutive months i've been getting almost a month pay for each month. CASH! according to him.. the company wants to repay me for what ive done for the company (the million dolllars worth of lyings and operations) for the last couple of years. dont kno if it's true.. but i have a strong feeling that he also might realize my depressed state right now as well.

hmmm.. but what ever the reason is.. am just happy getting my money.

so where the money is now? erm.. bank. not my saving acc.. but my home loan account.

I have nearly finished day 3 of not smoking. (AGAIN.) But happy, happy, the thought of having a cig now makes me feel ill.

I know Champix can make you feel nauseous, surely that should be at the beginning of the treatment? I have felt like this since I had those cigs last week. Nothing major though.

I find that now I am not thinking of cigs all the time. I suppose I mean I don't feel as if something is missing from my life like I used to do. Good. Hopefully this time I am winning. I have saved a few bob with not smoking. I know for sure that I couldn't afford my old 20 a day habit any more. Fingers crossed, this time I can do it.

It is dead, at last. And I am very glad.

This plastic card that went about with me everywhere, tempted me into buying things I have not wanted, gave me many sleepless nights, ate into my savings, mocked me each time I decided to do away with its genorisities...is finally dead. Ha, the relief it brings! No more passing by stores and thwarting the desire to use it...just one swipe....

When I walked into the bank, head high and demanded a recipt for the cancellation of the card, I made myself proud. No. I didnt want the card any more, I told the man who was looking for ways to make me retain it.

Why? asked he, mournfully.

Ah, I dont need it any more (No, I had not suddenly come by a fortune)

Why? A smile of surprise. He may have heard people say this and that, but I hoped, not any one who just did not need it. In his experience, everyone needed the plastic card.

Ah, I said again. I am doing away with the temptations.

It is better, I think, to get to the point without hesitation. I was sure that no amount of excuses on his side was going to make me keep it.

He bribed me with the 'free card' scheme, 'the travel the world' scheme, 'easy cash', 'precious gifts', 'points' scheme...but no. I had made up my mind.

The card has served me well, I said again. But I decided not to trouble it further. The old card can rest in the bin or elsewhere and need not be bothered to 'distract' me from my mission.

A few minutes of silence followed. I was undeterred. A mind made up is a mind made up. Nothing can change it. Of course in those minutes, I gave the card a kindly thought. It had come to my rescue many times when I suddenly found that my wallet had leaked away all the money, it had dutifully stood by me when a sudden fascination for a laptop had gripped me quite unnecessarily. I recalled those times when I walked into a store full of confidence knowing that if I were to fall prey to the dazzle of diamonds or gold or silver, my blue card would come to the rescue...

The customer care man gave one last try.

That sent a shudder down my spine. I wasnt going to let him remind me that my time was running out. That finally pushed me into making the final decision.

Cut it up for me, right now.

He did something better. He punched three holes in it and handed it over.

Having just browsed through a current issue of The Birmingham Post (2/3/2007) I read an article in PERSPECTIVE called 'Money doesn't make the world go around' by Ann Pettifor. She sheds a new light on the conflict of 'interest' between Christianity and Islam ... the conflict between our western values and Muslim values.

She points out that in our western society we condone the making of money from money. Our western values are ...'rooted in the accumulation fo wealth and the absence regulation. We call it "liberalisation" and export it all over the world'.

On the other hand, 'Islam has never accepted the legitamcy of interest. To this day Islam prohibits the taking or giving of interest or riba, regardless of the purpose of the loan, or the rates at which interest is charged. Islamic banks are savings institutuions and when they make loans they do so as stakeholders, sharing in risks and losses'.

These two religions are mutually exclusive it seems.

But is it just "money which is the root of all evil" or is religion the true problem - it seems that so many incomprehensible wars and intolerable circumstances foisted upon the citizens of our earth are the result of religion......

With conflicts continuing to rage around the world the media is never short of something to write about or to show pictures of - heart-rending, gruesome, eye-opening photos - we are inundated daily. What do most people, who have the luxury of a safe home and environment do? For the most part we sigh, we comment on the injustices in the world, we feel powerless to do anything really worthwhile. We can certainly contribute to the various fund-raising efforts - but does our money and our good intentions ever arrive? Do they actually every really help those that it is intended for?

"Oh God!", "For God's sake!", "God help us" and "God help them".....familiar phrases - but with little consequence it seems.

Well, it's nearly a month and it will be on Sunday night at 12:45 pm. Four weeks without a cig. Hope anyone who made a New Year's resolution is doing well. This is the first one I have kept for so long. It seems I have added 2 extra days to my life with not smoking. So, what do I do with them???? Also saved a good amount of money. It's very cold here now. But I have just been thinking, although January has seemed the longest month ever to me, it has gone past very quickly. Presume, the older you get, the quicker time flies by. Now, at my age, that is a worry! Still working, going again tomorrow. Then, I am sticking to just the two shifts. OK, I keep saying that. But when there is a shortage of nurses, I feel guilty and go to work. NOT always though. My friend says it's hot in Australia where she lives. Huh. She comes home and has a dip in the pool.
