The NYT Magazine is running an article this weekend titled...

The NYT Magazine is running an article this weekend titled "Malwebolence," about internet 'trolls' who enjoy causing harm to others, either because it's just fun -- they speak of "the joy of disrupting another's emotional equilibrium" while "you chat with friends and laugh" -- or perhaps because they have the notion that they are helping others learn how to handle explosives by blowing them up in their faces. One troll says his passion is 'pushing peoples' buttons' and he "frames his acts of trolling as ... sociological inquiries into human behavior." He also says: "'It's not that I do this because I hate them. I do this because I'm trying to save them.'" It seems fairly obvious through the article that this particular troll is trying to save himself, as well, though it may be too late: "'Am I the bad guy? Am I the big horrible person who shattered someone's life with some information? No! This is life. Welcome to life. Everyone goes through it. I've been through horrible stuff, too.' 'Like what?' I asked. Sexual abuse, [he] said." At age 5 he was molested by his grandfather [his mother confirms this] and three other relatives.

The article's author, Mattathias Schwartz, asks his readers at one point:

"Does free speech tend to move toward the truth or away from it? When does it evolve into a better collective understanding? When does it collapse into the Babel of trolling, the pointless and eristic game of talking the other guy into crying 'uncle'? Is the effort to control what's said always a form of censorship, or might certain rules be compatible with our notions of free speech?"

Free speech may be one issue to consider; it's not what immediately interests me reading this article. My interest is primarily in the proliferation (or so it's asserted) of mob violence online, what motivates and triggers it, and how it proceeds. As Schwartz says, attempting to respond to his own free speech query:

"Why inflict anguish on a helpless stranger? It's tempting to blame technology, which increases the range of our communications while dehumanizing the recipients. ... But while technology reduces the social barriers that keep us from bedeviling strangers, it does not explain the initial trolling impulse. This seems to spring from something ugly -- a destructive human urge that many feel but few act upon, the ambient misanthropy that's a frequent ingredient of art, politics and, most of all, jokes. There's a lot of hate out there, and a lot to hate as well."

Online mob violence, imo, is no different from in-your-face mob violence except perhaps, as Schwartz points out, it's considerably facilitated by anonymity and breadth of coverage. But the motivations, the triggers, and the process are the same in either case.

That 'trolling' is highly mimetic and is often mob violence is evidenced several times in the article:

The Internet is "a mass medium for defining who we are to ourselves and to others." Yet another way to explore and express who we are, vs. everyone else, through blogging perhaps more than through message boards, at least as the boards are used by most people.

"Trolling has evolved [perhaps the wrong term] from ironic solo skit to vicious group hunt." "Technology, apparently, does more than harness the wisdom of the crowd. It can intensify its hatred as well."

The victims are seem as utterly deserving of their fate, complicit in it, inviting it -- "You, the troll says, are not worthy of my understanding; I, therefore, will do everything I can to confound you" -- as is shown in this interchange between a troll and Schwartz:

"'You have green hair,' he told me. 'Did you know that?'
"'No,' I said.
"'Why not?'
"'I look in the mirror. I see my hair is black.'
"'That’s uh, interesting. I guess you understand that you have green hair about as well as you understand that you're a terrible reporter.'
"'What do you mean? What did I do?'
"'That's a very interesting reaction,' [he] said. 'Why didn't you get so defensive when I said you had green hair?' "
If I were certain that I wasn't a terrible reporter, he explained, I would have laughed the suggestion off just as easily. The willingness of trolling 'victims' to be hurt by words, he argued, makes them complicit, and trolling will end as soon as we all get over it."

Another troll put it even more bluntly and graphically:

"'Trolling is basically Internet eugenics. ... I want everyone off the Internet. Bloggers are filth. They need to be destroyed. Blogging gives the illusion of participation to a bunch of retards. ... We need to put these people in the oven!'"

No one else is seen as innocent, therefore no one else is seen as a true victim and no one is seen as a perpetrator. Everyone else is seen as deserving of destruction at the hands of trolls, who, in some cases, see themselves as performing a meritorious service.

That same troll implied that the mob (or a segment of it) is ripe for a leader and is waiting for a sign:

"'We're waiting,' [he] said. 'We need someone to show us the way. The messiah.'
"'How do you know it's not you?' I asked.
"'If it were me, I would know,' he said. 'I would receive a sign.'
"Zeno of Elea, Socrates and Jesus, [he] said, are his all-time favorite trolls. He also identifies with Coyote and Loki, the trickster gods, and especially with Kali, the Hindu goddess of destruction."

Beyond the indications of mob violence and mimesis, there's also an indication of antisocial personality disorder (sociopathy) -- an individual personality disorder, quite apart from the group phenomenon of mob violence -- in some of their comments about what's right and wrong, though even these might be echoed (often not out loud) by 'normal' people. It's the rationale, the feelings (or lack thereof) and the destructive actions, unchecked by any sense of true compassion for others, that together paint a particularly disturbing and illuminating picture:

"I asked [one troll] whether a person is obliged to give food to a starving stranger. No, [he] argued; no one is entitled to our sympathy or empathy. We can choose to give or withhold them as we see fit. 'I can't push you into the fire,' he explained, 'but I can look at you while you're burning in the fire and not be required to help.' [Metaphorically, though, according to this article some trolls have pushed some people into the fire -- their actions, usually en masse, have contributed to the deaths, job losses and relationship losses of others. They haven't simply sat passively by. They've set the fire, fanned it and then watched others struggle and writhe. Examples in the article.]

Asked "Is there anything that can be done on the Internet that shouldn't be done?," he didn't have an answer.

Another troll justified his desire to "kill four [billion] of the world's six billion people in the most just way possible" with his fear that "we are headed for a Malthusian crisis." (He's the one who said he's waiting for a messiah.)

Schwartz ends the article by quoting some message board commenters trying to discern what makes people bad or good. "Finally," he says, someone types: "'I'd say empathy is probably a factor.'"

Tutoring on the net – How it changed my life Summary: I used my pocket...

Tutoring on the net – How it changed my lifeSummary: I used my pocket money for the tuitions, and one day the school results were out, I looked at the math and the Chemistry grades, and I let out a whoop!I write this at the ripe age of 25 years. I hated going to school, and then was persuaded to do college. My aversion to education was that I was a poor grade student, weak in math and in sciences, especially with those long symbols for chemicals and the math that was involved in working out the chemistry equation, and how chemical reactions took place. My parents organized a tutor for me. Half the time he would not appear, and half the time I would disappear because there was a rugby match on, and I wanted to be seen as “hey, Buddy” look who’s here. The second half was more the reason for the failing of my tuition classes. It was one of those days that I got a tongue lashing – you see I am too old for being beaten up! Morosely, I went through the motions of dinner and my father went through the motions of giving me a lecture on how important was education. It did not enter his head that I could not understand, and while I had a burning desire to learn, the match between the tutor and me was a no-go.So on it went day after day, week by week, and years rolled by. I too realized that it was important for me to learn the fundamentals of all subjects, so that I could be the jack of all trades, and master of none. While surfing on the internet I joined a group of people on chat, which was discussing how math was a bore, and how some of the boys just like me had found it made interesting, and easy to learn, and how some had gone from D grade to A grade. That’s interesting I thought. I asked them about where they found such a tutor and they gave me a site www.transwebtutors.com.When I went to the site, it offered a chance to try it for free once. On that site I could not believe it that I could submit some questions on theorems or calculus which I did not understand, and found that this teacher, whom I shall call Sharma, an Indian, in an online classroom, took me step by step through the process of unraveling the mysteries of math and calculus. It appeared that this Mr. Sharma was a teacher at transwebtutors.com, and he was using his time off and of course the night in giving tuitions on the internet at particular times.I then tried a similar tutor for Chemistry there, for though I was not good at the subject, I liked the subject. This time, too, within a few days, a lot of nonsense was beginning to make sense.Indeed the site was such that you could practically find every subject covered in the syllabus had a tutor who specialized in it! Of course it was not free. You had to pay up, and it sounded pretty cheap to me, because for these two subjects I was spending only $ 20 or so per hour (per subject), to catch up. My tutor at home was charging $ 50 for an hour!I used my pocket money for the tuitions, and one day the school results were out. I looked at the math and the Chemistry grades, and I let out a whoop! I had made to the top of the grade. When I showed to my parents, they could not believe it. They thought I had fudged it. It was then I broke the secret that I was holding close to my chest. I told them about the online tuition I had been taking, and how I was paying for it from my pocket money.I was not believed, frankly. I then made them sit with me in my study, and I went online. My father, who thinks, and is, a cat in Math, posed some questions to the tutor at the other end. Pat! Came the reply; you are not what you claim to be: you are a much higher studied student of Math, and not the Patrick I knew who was poor in math! Boy, my father was taken aback. Still the tutor gave him the full resolution, step by step, of the problem, and how the answer could be arrived at!From that day onwards, my parents never once berated me or treated me like a necessary leper of the household. What made all this possible were my enthusiastic teachers at transwebtutors.com. Using the reach of the internet, and the PC to PC communication, they taught long distance their own specialized subjects. This was done via using even an electronic blackboard, and if someone had doubts, all doubts could be posted on the board, and an online tutor would explain the basics to the final solution to the problem.Since there is a time difference between India and the rest of Europe (4.30 hours), and US (about 10.30 to 1200 hours), you could also post your problem on the website, and by the time you got up, the tutor had already looked at the board, and given out the answers. Some thought, okay, my homework is done; yes, it was. But for people like me, the tutors help came in helping to understand and then solve the problems. Here are some websites that can help you, if you want:http://www.transwebtutors.comhttp://www.transtutors.com

Joining social networking sites are incredibly fun, especially for those who...

Joining social networking sites are incredibly fun, especially for those who desire to set up and expand their online social networks. In order to accomplish that, you initially need to build an online profile. Basically, you have to create a page that reflects who you are and what you do. For instance, people with artistic talents can certainly promote their art works through their social networks.Aside from personal profiles, social networking sites also offer TV/Radio Show profiles that further assist in advertising persons, products or services. Business owners who wish to expand their client-base may also make use of business profiles offered by certain Web sites. In addition, non-profit organizations and charitable institutions may also build profiles that are specially equipped to accept contributions online. If you want to build up your own profile, try to make use of the following useful tips.Decide On What You Want To SayFor starters, make your mind up about what you would like to say. If you want to create a profile that is strictly personal, then simply present your qualities, interests, hobbies, and the like. You may also concentrate on a particular facet of your personality if you want. For instance, if you have a penchant for dogs then you may definitely focus your social networking profile on that.Be Detailed And DescriptiveAnother valuable tip in building a profile is to be detailed and descriptive, especially in the use of significant phrases and words contained in the title and description fields. This way, like-minded individuals would find it easier to come across your page when they launch a search.Use Appropriate CategoriesWhen building a profile on a social networking site, you should see to it that you pick only the most fitting category. For example, if you intend to create one for your business, make sure that you choose a category that would best serve your purpose.Create A Profile That Is Easy To Navigate And ReadMake sure that the social networking profile you make is both easy to read and navigate. It’s a terrific idea to avoid weighing your page down with big image files that have enormous sizes; otherwise, the site will take a longer period of time to download. Keep in mind that people are usually in a hurry and they will more likely go to the next available site if your profile is excessively elaborate or requires more time for loading up.As a last piece of advice: try to be choosy with your contacts. Only add friends that somehow mirror your character and interests. Businesses, in particular, should really pay attention to this feature.Being picky with the contacts you add will consequently reflect on you. Plus, it will leave your social networking profile looking a tad more attractive and professional compared to those who sloppily accept friend requests from just about anyone.Vanessa Arellano Doctorhttp://conbuzz.com

On internet UK bingo games most accepted for bonuses points. Match bonuses are also a way of attracting new players. With the match bonus, the house attracts new players by matching a percentage of the player’s initial deposit. The percentage varies from establishment to establishment and is one of the features used to attract new players to a site. The matching bonuses always have conditions attached and the wise player will read the Terms and Conditions closely to ascertain the conditions and procedures involved. Unless the player follows the required procedures, the player does not receive the bonus. The bonuses that are used to attract new customers basically lower the cost of gambling to the player. These are ways of lowering the house advantage and even if these bonuses cannot be withdrawn from the player’s account, they are still funds that are used to buy cards that can lead to winnings that can be withdrawn.

In fact, this is one of the first things that people see in an advertisement and if it looks good enough, they will visit the site to see what the best online casino playing site offers. The bonus is can take different forms. It may be something like a certain amount of time spent playing the games for free. There may be a certain number of free spins or a certain amount of money they can use to play with or a certain number of hours. These are big drawing points for the online casino. They are giving the players free money to play with so, of course, there are a lot of players that are interested. Another form of free money is in the form of the matching bonus and these can be in an amount in excess of 100% of the initial deposit. These are funds that are credited to the players wagering account when the player completes the registration and makes a deposit. Most sites require the players to have real play accounts in order to benefit from these bonuses and many sites offer matching bonuses on subsequent deposits. Players muse compare the different sites in order to find the best deals because different sites offer different deals. Players must also read the conditions that apply to these bonuses so they are aware of the policies of the casino business that is offering the bonus.

Already the most popular game on the internet, the game of online bingo will continue to provide growth for the gambling industry. When the passage of the UIGEA forced many of the listed gambling companies from the United States market, they moved to Europe. Europe is a growing and developing market for them now and bingo is viewed as the way into a national market. This is what they are trying in Spain now. Bingo is an easy way into a market because the game is a lottery type game that doesn’t require any skill or strategy. People play the free bingo online game and play side games like slots and video poker and other games. Eventually, players want to play more of the side games and graduate to online casinos with poker and table games, in addition to slots. And the gambling company that sponsored the online bingo site is there with the online casino site that has the games the players are now graduating to.The online bingo market has been the biggest growth market for the past eighteen months in England and is expected to continue to grow as the gambling companies look to other national markets to gain entry to. This may not make up for the loss of the U.S. market for many companies but it will provide a new market for them. These markets will become more lucrative as the markets grow.

The world of casinos and gambling is slightly schizophrenic these days. Even events within a nation are not entirely consistent. Take the United States for example. There is now a bigger difference between online casino gambling and brick and mortar gambling. The brick and mortar version is growing and expanding as more forms of gambling become available at race tracks. The features providing on internet to play online casino and bingo games is just amazing. Player can find more choices and other good opportunity to play any online casino games with largest online playing crowd. The online transactions part is getting hit harder and harder as the government cracks down with the NeTeller directors and founders being arrested. In England they are getting ready for the new regulations to go into effect in July when more forms of gambling become legal. Las Vegas style gambling will then be legal in the country. Great Britain is one of the few countries in Europe where casinos are not legal. In the rest of the EU the gambling markets are beginning to open as the state monopolies in gambling are ending. Some of the big gambling companies are trying to make their way into Spain and Austria. But nowadays UK online casinos and UK bingo games are most accepted on internet. Even traditional casino and latest version casino games are most demanded however it is revolution or not. The online gambling aspect will expand in the coming months especially as the mobile gaming increases further. This is expected to be the huge growth market through the world, minus the United States. Others are looking at online bingo as the way of entry into national markets. China has cracked down on gambling and the Russians are moving the casinos into gambling zones in remote areas of the country. The overall market is growing even though certain national markets are not.

There are hundreds of wonderful sites where we can play online games. I used to use many of them, then narrowed the selection (and lessened the time spent to play online games) to three, then got hooked on one in particular. Boxerjam.com has unique games, really. This makes sense, as Boxerjam was one of the first places where web users could play online games. In the early eighties I recall being introduced to the internet by way of the Prodigy browser/ISP and with my surfing lessons came the blast of blasts—Strike a Match. I then graduated to Know-it-all and Mindstein. All these games are extremely challenging and equally fun. There was also a year or so when I played addictivegames.com, games that are also free and that number in the hundreds from which to choose. But then, then I discovered I could play online games for a few dollars a month (about 5 bucks a month when one buys a year’s membership), could compete, or could play alone (with robots), and could get a chance to win a jackpot! I need money. Not a lot, as I am one of simple needs, having reduced my user habits as much as possible but of course I need money to survive, and as a writer that means extra money besides the income that is for now quite limited. So I play online games at this site for fun, challenge, and catharsis, but always with an eye toward and a prayer for the few thousand dollars I COULD win.The site is called Pogo.com. It is absolutely the best place to play online games—and I am not saying so because I am affiliated in any way with EA Games (I’m NOT) or to get special chances for cash winnings. (I write this anonymously, as a ghostwriter.) I just say this because of the composition and evident positive effects of site. Here are a few details/reasons I find to play online games at Pogo.com:The draw of Pogo is stunning.300,000 Pogo players make 4.2 million uniques (unique visits) to www.pogo.com. Of this number, 75% are women of the average age of 35. Pogo members log on, chat with friends all over the world, and go for their weekly badges or the coveted jackpot by playing board, word, or action games, or casino-style cards or slots. The rooms where you can play online games at Pogo are filled with fun, funny, and nice folk from all over the world. They carry on conversations that are typically healthy, upbeat, and supportive of each other. (I recall during the deadly fires in southern California, a whole room of gamers coached a woman who was at home, surrounded by fires, on what to do and how to stay calm. So, she wasn’t even there to play games that day but was consulting her friends around the globe and reaching out for emotional support.) People play online games for many reasons, in other words. They do it for fun, for relaxation, for company, for support, for distraction (yes, many do so for this reason while they are at work!). They go to great lengths to connect every day with other players and with their favorite games. They do so during crisis, before crisis, after crisis, at work, after work, and even (as I have read many comment they do) before work, getting up hours early so they can play online games at Pogo. I don’t blame them. I would do the same if I could.

Recently I was intrigued by the discussion on Google web applications, and had looked into such existing products or services. I came across two most interesting cases.

1) www.Goowy.com (based on Macromedia Flex)
2) www.eyeOS.info (based on Ajax)

It is better that you guys get a first hand experience of both the webtops so that you can realize their pros and cons.
A webtop is a great concept, where you can have some handy tools on the internet and use them from anywhere in the world. You can set your own personalized wallpaper, themes as they suite you.

With Goowy you also get a 1GB storage where you can store any type of file upto 10MB in size. I have already uploaded most of my important data and documents over there (Gmail is clumsy for file storage). Goowy also offers some cool handy widgets called minis. You can place your favourite RSS feeds onto the webtop, along with reminders etc. The most attractive feature of Goowy is its Flex environment which gives it a very smooth behaviour and neat outlook. So far so good. But Goowy seems to have a drawback of future upgradability. I don't anticipate that Goowy will upgrade the set of applications that come with it anytime soon, due to its rigid Flex based design.

Also as we had been discussing about online desktop with general applications webalized, that thing doesn't seem to happen with Goowy.

This is where eyeOS.info comes in. It is a brilliantly programmed Ajax webtop and offers powerful features. Try its application, eyeEdit, and I am sure that you will find it more powerful (in editing) than Writely (check table drawing feature).

Apart from the general theming features, check the list of eyeApps, and its amazing to find things as cool as an ftp client inbuilt. The way eyeOS has developed its framework, I am sure soon they will expand eyeApps to a stage when we can install 3rd party apps designed for eyeOS. For example, imagine an eyeOS port of Gmail (which is nothing but making Gmail run into the eyeOS windowing system) and similarly ports of Google Calender, Writely etc.

Things sound great. But however, I had a problem with both of them. They both ran inside a browser window. Bringing my browser to fullscreen mode relaxed me a bit as I was able to assume I am not on Windows but on some absolutely new OS.

But then again felt the urge to have it run in tandem with my other desktop applications. Basically I wanted no distinction between a local app and online app. I wanted both, the webtop and the desktop to merge into one powerful system. I accomplished that to some extent:

1) Right click your desktop and goto properties.
2) Click customize desktop
3) Click the Web tab
4) Click New and add both Goowy and eyeOS websites.
5) Make sure only one of them is checked, howsoever.
6) Now you will see a small IE window on your desktop (after you have completed the settings)
7) Hover to its top edge and the title bar should appear.
8) Click the small down arrow on the top left and select Cover Desktop

After having done this, you will realize that logically, the webtop is now your Desktop! You should be able to use the webtop apps and the local apps with equal ease.

Unfortunately, eyeOS has some trouble with integrating into your desktop (as you will notice once you do it).

Goowy however is perfect with its integration. Rather it feels fabulous to have Goowy on your desktop, and set a Goowy wallpaper of your choice, and set up the minis with the latest news!

But one problem remains unsolved even after all this, i.e. absolute integration of the two systems. To elaborate this, the problem is, that the webtop application windows have no integration with those of local applications. However acheiving that is definitely possible, the way GTalk inbuilt in Gmail achieves it. By default it runs in the same window but however it can popped out and converted into a standard window.

So what are your views on this? And what are the other improvements you think can be implemented?
