I remembered to photo the cappuccino star cookies (I also made them in Christmas tree shapes) and the four loaves of orange-poppyseed bread I made yesterday.

Below is the grey squirrel who's been hanging out in this tree for months, taken a few moments ago in our light falling snow.

Spring finally seems to be making headway here, with temps in the 50s and crocus blooming.

Photos below are crocus, taken last week in the rain; crocus and galanthus (snowdrops), taken yesterday; bleeding heart (dicentra) emerging from the soil, taken yesterday. Click on any to enlarge somewhat, or see larger versions at Flickr.

Yesterday my niece and I jumped on a bus then a train and went to Silverdale, Lancashire.
Not really far from here. It is years and years since I last went there. All I could remember was the Fairy Steps. We didn't see them though.

It was a nice day and the tide was in.
I quite liked the sound of this place. Lovely name.

It was quite an experience to see the local river melting. If you got close enough, you could see frozen autumn leaves gently freeing themselves, bubbles trapped just beneath the surface, etc. I swear I even heard the ice sheet cracking up, literally!

We've had a crazy winter here in KC. I didn't know it really can get below zero Fahrenheit here. Snow storm, black ice, u name it. Saw some amazing icicles everywhere, even off vehicles' number plates dangling like a beard! Wish I had a camera w/ me all d time...

We were fortunate to have blowing snow one day, which is better for camera lighting than sun, and I think the misty, fog-like snow adds mood to the photos, making even the ordinary seem dramatic. Not that the Washington Monument or Capitol is ordinary, but.

San Francisco.

As sister and I were driving past Danielle Steele's house one day in June 2006, (yes, you read that right.) I would love to say that we had been invited in for a cuppa. But I can't lie.
Actually, we were on top of an open top bus after going over The Golden Gate Bridge. We also passed the home or maybe now, ex home of Clint Eastwood too. Not often I can name drop. Unfortunately, neither of them were spotted. Even if they had been pottering about in their front gardens, they would have been very well "hidden."
This happened in June. Happy days.

Early October is happy time in the garden. Not too much raking, hardly any weeding, a little watering and pruning, severe cutting back of some perennials, annuals still going strong, a few perennials blooming, and foliage catching the low fall sunlight. 120 calories isn't much, except in terms of fruit, cherry tomatoes, and celery. But the photos are sort of mesmerising ...

I stood in Rite Aid drug store last night, considering a box of Jujyfruits (like the Wine Gums in the photos), and saw that 7 or 8 pieces of candy is 120 calories. The whole box contained over 1,000 calories and I have, on occasion, eaten a whole box of Jujyfruits at the movies. A Sobering Thought.

Around the Garden with Astilbes

I've got seven astilbes in the garden, six currently in bloom, more or less, and one on the way. I know the varieties of only two of the plants, which range in size from a foot tall and wide to hefty shrub-sized. Herewith, the astilbe gallery (click to view larger size):

Summer Solstice

The summer solstice occurs today at 2:06 p.m. (EDT). Hence, flowers and wine.

Our first peony bloomed a couple of days ago, at the tail end of Spring. Here's a photo of the underside:

... which is quite different from the pink-streaked underside of another white peony that started blooming yesterday:

Another peony in bloom is magenta with a magenta/lavender center:

Most of the peonies are not yet blooming but are on the verge.

Tip from The Vermont Gardener on prolonging peony season: "Peonies can be cut in the bud stage when they are just showing color and then wrapped in newspaper or a loose plastic bag and placed in the bottom of the fridge. They'll last there for about a month and then with a fresh cut and a vase full of water they'll open up to everyone's surprise." I haven't tried this.

Two more garden photos, one of the purple and yellow iris I've featured previously, and one of the bloom of the Filipendula hexapetula (Meadowsweet), which has ferny foliage (foliage not shown). As always, click on photos to see enlarged images.

On another note, this is the wine I am enjoying for summer, a fresh, crisp, light Santola vinho verde (with a crab on the label!):

"The clean nose exhibits aromas of limestone, cardamom and fruit spice hints, along with limeaid spritz. The sip offers a bright, tropical lime along with earthen notes in the middle, then concentrated lemon citrus in the finish. " (per Darryl Beeson). Others detect a hint of pear.

Il y a environ un mois, un concert etait organise par l'alliance Francaise de Colombo, a Colombo.

J'ai decouvert ce soir là, un groupe Francais magique, sensible, creatif, touchant. Bahasabé interprete le metissage. Leurs textes et musiques sont un carnet de voyage...

J'ai eu un vrai coup de coeur pour le groupe BAHASABÉ ! ...on peut ecouter quelques unes de leurs chansons sur leur site.

Today as I was cleaning out some drawers

I came across the box of photographs

I've had since I was young

It's filled with snaps of people

frozen in a moment of time and space

never getting any older, just out of date

Some I recognized, but others I couldn't place

As I looked through these vestiges of my youth

I found a few photos of you and me

so very young and deeply in love

the date on the back says august '73

Now I don't remember the occasion

or who snapped us unexpectedly

but it sure shows the fun we had

and I'm warped back instantly

We're goofing around while dancing

and are still completely unaware

that our love would be over

as soon as autumn would be there

Though I still can't grasp the reasons

I know it severely broke our hearts

Our love lasted only a few seasons

before it fell apart

In hindsight I know

we had the best of times

and some of my fondest memories

are those I made with you

and they still can make my eyes shine

I can't help but wondering

do you ever think of me

and did you too keep the old photographs

to look at occasionally

I guess I'll never know

but if so, I hope looking at them

still brings a smile to your face

and you've kept me in your heart

like I kept you, in a tiny little place
