BASEL - Turkey sent co-hosts Switzerland sliding out of Euro 2008 in the cruelest possible way on Wednesday when a stoppage time goal from Arda Turan secured a 2-1 victory in an enthralling Group A match at St Jakob Park.

The Swiss fans were just about to applaud a draw that would have kept their team in contention when Arda curled in a shot that took a deflection off defender Patrick Mueller and flew past goalkeeper Diego Benaglio for the winning goal.

The result also means Portugal, who earlier beat Czech Republic 3-1, became the first team to reach the quarter-finals. They are top of the group with six points ahead of the Czechs and Turkey on three with the Swiss bottom with no points.

The victory was a measure of revenge for the Turks because the last time they met Switzerland, in a World Cup qualifying playoff in 2005 in Istanbul, the Swiss went through on the away goals rule and the match ended in a touchline brawl.

"It's a wonderful feeling," said Turkey coach Fatih Terim. "The players need it for their confidence and I congratulate them on their incredible efforts.

"The three points give us a lot of hope for the last match . We're still here and still playing. This is the beginning of the Euros for us."

Big disappointment

Switzerland coach Koebi Kuhn added: "It's a very, very big disappointment. The whole country is probably as disappointed as the team. You hope for so much and go all out. But at the end of the day it's not enough. That's football."

Arda's goal, which came from a superb counter-attacking move after the Swiss had a chance to go 2-1 ahead themselves, keeps Turkey afloat in the tournament after torrential rain had reduced the pitch to a quagmire in the first half.

A 30-minute downpour that began soon after kickoff made conditions in the first half almost unplayable as the increasingly rain-sodden surface became dotted with puddles.

For a few minutes it looked as if the match might have to be abandoned, but the worst of the rain passed by halftime and the pitch improved in the second period.

Switzerland had taken the lead in the 32nd minute with a goal that owed as much to the conditions as to the quick thinking of forward Eren Derdiyok.

Forced out wide he hit a low cross into the box that eluded goalkeeper Volkan Demirel, and bounced in and out of a puddle before falling for Hakan Yakin who poked it into an empty net.

Turkey equalized after 57 minutes when substitute Semih Senturk outjumped Swiss skipper Ludovic Magnin to reach Nihat Kahveci's cross and power an unstoppable header past Benaglio.

The second half was evenly balanced and Volkan had to make a fine double save from Yakin and Swiss substitute Ricardo Cabanas late on before Arda collected a superb pass from Tuncay Sanli before cutting inside to score from the edge of the area.

CANBERRA - Police began an unprecedented security crackdown in Australia's national capital on Wednesday to protect the Olympic flame from protests during the latest leg of the torch's troubled journey around the world.
China had hoped the torch's progress would be a symbol of unity in the run-up to the Beijing Games.
But at several previous relays, the flame has drawn anti-China protests over human rights and Beijing's crackdown in Tibet, as well as pro-China demonstrations.
"All of our planning to date has anticipated that there will be issues," Canberra police commander Mike Phelan said. "I'm very confident that we have enough resources in place," he said.
The Australian relay is on Thursday, but pro-Tibet demonstrators have already beamed laser signs on to the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge reading "Don't Torch Tibet".
A group of Tibetan exiles on hunger strike ended a 70 km march to Canberra on Wednesday and joined a candlelight vigil outside the Chinese embassy to protest against the torch relay.
"We have walked for 3 days without food and we will break our fast tonight at 10 p.m. The oldest, aged 65, was a former political prisoner and the youngest is 13, the daughter of political prisoners in Tibet," their leader Tenpa Dugak told Reuters.
The flame, carried on an official Chinese Olympics jet, landed at an air force base in the capital under the kind of protection usually afforded visiting world leaders. Local officials said security on Thursday would exceed protection given to U.S. President George W. Bush's visit in 2003.
Thousands of pro-Tibet supporters have promised peaceful rallies during Thursday's torch relay, while thousands of Chinese students were expected to rally in support of China.
Tibet supporters disrupted the London, Paris and San Francisco relays, prompting officials to shorten the relay routes in India, Malaysia and Indonesia.
Australian organizers have dropped plans to run the torch past the Chinese embassy, near Australia's national parliament, fearing the heavily fenced mission could be a flashpoint.
Hundreds of extra police have been called in to protect the flame, which will be carried by 80 runners through 16 kilometers of barricaded streets.
Right to protest
Media reports said the Chinese embassy had hired 20 buses to bring supporters from Sydney and the southern city of Melbourne, an eight-hour drive from Canberra, to counter protesters.
"We're in a democratic country. If people want to protest, that's a matter for them, as long as they do it peacefully," International Olympic spokesman Kevan Gosper told Reuters after watching the torch arrive.
Australia's five-time Olympic gold medal swimmer Ian Thorpe, who will run the final leg of the Canberra relay, said he also understood why people were demonstrating.
"I'd just like to think that if you are going to protest on issues like this, it shouldn't be centered around a particular event," said Thorpe.
Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd raised concerns about human rights in Tibet in meetings with China's leadership in Beijing earlier this month, but said Australia recognized China's sovereignty over Tibet.
Torch relay organizer Ted Quinlan said he did not expect clashes, while a spokeswoman for China's Foreign Ministry said she was confident the Canberra torch relay would be a success.
Phelan said the torch route, expected to start with a lake-crossing, would have contingencies in place if the expected protests turned violent.
He stressed Australian police alone would handle security after Beijing Olympic Committee spokesman Qu Yingpu hinted Chinese attendants could step in, prompting hurried denials from city officials.
The chaotic scenes and perceived biased Western media coverage of the Tibet riots and the torch disruptions have sparked an outpouring of patriotic fervor among Chinese in and outside China.
Chinese Internet users have rushed to send thousands of red national flags overseas to support the troubled torch relay ahead of the Olympics, state media said.
In Tokyo, where the torch travels after Australia, authorities planned to surround the flame with riot police and another 100 regular police in two rows, media said on Wednesday.

The Philippines' Dennis Laurente dropped Steve Quinonez of Palm Springs, California via technical knockout in the fourth round of their eight-round lightweight fight Saturday in the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-David Diaz "Lethal Combination" clash at the Mandalay Bay Hotel Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

MalacaГ±ang supports the Government Service Insurance System in its demand for a "management change" in the Manila Electric Co. and for GSIS to be given access to the corporate records of the countrys largest power distributor.
"What the GSIS is doing is exercising its right as a stockholder of MERALCO. I agree and I think the President also agrees with the actions taken by the GSIS," Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye said in an interview with state-run dzRB.
The move of GSIS president Winston Garcia to look into the books of MERALCO has fueled speculation that the government is gearing up for takeover of the Lopez-controlled firm.
Bunye said that the GSIS, as a substantial stakeholder in MERALCO, has the right to pore over books of the company.
Garcia has engaged MERALCO officials in a word war with the GSIS president accusing the power firm of not being transparent in its operations.
GSIS owns 23 percent of the shares of stock of MERALCO while other government entities such as Philhealth, Land Bank of the Philippines, Social Security System, and Pag-Ibig Fund hold a combined 10 percent stake.
With a combined 33 percent stake, the governments holdings in MERALCO is almost the same as the 33.4 percent held by the Lopez group.
Garcia earlier assailed MERALCO for raising the specter of a takeover.
"Claims to this effect are utterly false and malicious, intended to undermine and divert attention away from the GSIS campaign to bring back social responsibility and good corporate governance at MERALCO," Garcia said.
"Clearly, the bogeyman being raised by GSIS critics is but a poorly-conceived squid tactic to preserve the appalling status quo at MERALCO," he said.
"We are asking for documents to make sure that our pensioners are protected. We are searching for the truth. We are not taking control of MERALCO," Garcia said.
"MERALCO has been getting away with bloody murder against its very shareholders, who share the same boat with its customers in being saddled with unjustifiably high electricity bills," he said.
"The GSIS has four seats in MERALCO, but such huge stake has not stopped its management from treating GSIS like a dirt rag," Garcia said.

Environmental groups are studying the possibility of seeking a temporary restraining order to prevent the Philippine National Oil Company-Energy Development Corp. from entering the buffer zone of Mt. Kanlaon Natural Park to tap more geothermal power.
Rusty Binas of Green Alert Negros said those opposed to the project can still stop the PNOC-EDC from entering the buffer zone.
Binas maintained that the project should not push through because Negros Occidental is not experiencing a power crisis. He also alleged that the intermittent brownouts being experienced in the province is intentional and are meant to cause public alarm.
Binas group and the Save Mount Kanlaon Coalition were set to stage more protests to condemn the geothermal excavation.
The buffer zone is a 169-hectare land declared as a protected area under Republic Act 9154 or the Mt. Kanlaon Natural Park Act.
The PNOC said it wants to conduct exploration activities in the buffer zone to reach its maximum capacity of generating 49 megawatts of geothermal energy.
Amid protests, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Negros Occidental approved the entry of the PNOC in the buffer zone but under certain conditions.
Among the conditions were the comprehensive implementation of environment programs to limit PNOCs exploration to the earlier agreed 12.5 hectares of the buffer zone and to establish an oversight and compliance committee.
PNOC-EDC manager Rei Medrano has assured the public that the company will protect and enhance biodiversity in the area.

DAVAO - Crop dusters skim like dragonflies above the low green canopy of the banana plantations stretching as far as the eye can see on the southern Philippine island of Mindanao.
The intrepid landowners of the coastal plains and low lying hills around the Davao Gulf are cashing in on a surge in demand for fresh fruit in the Middle East, Russia, China, Japan and South Korea.
While the vast majority of the country's farmers produce rice on small lots, barely producing enough to survive, big land owners like Antonio Floirendo supply a growing global market with bananas and pineapples.
"That's been one of our problems, we can't produce enough rice. Rice farmers, they come to us wanting to sell land," said the 92-year-old, silver-haired former car salesman.
The country's biggest banana producer is in the process of building a horseracing track outside his 400-hectare thoroughbred stud farm on the Marapangi hills above Davao city.
"You cannot blame them, that's where the money is," he told AFP.
Free from typhoons and blessed with rich sandy-loam soil and year-round rainfall, Mindanao, twice the size of Belgium, accounts for a third of the country's agricultural output and 60 percent of its farm exports.
Residents are flush with cash as mining, agriculture and other industries pick up, said John Sison, a senior manager at the Hijo Resources farm in nearby Tagum city.
"There are no food lines here," said Tagum mayor Rey Uy. "But some rice farmers are shifting to bananas."
Although rice is the Philippines' main crop, less than a third of the country's farm land is suitable for growing the staple, according to the Manila-based International Rice Research Institute.
Unlike much of the country, where rice farmers hand tend tiny plots that rely on seasonal rainfall with little or no credit access for purchasing fertilizer and other inputs, the half-million hectares planted to bananas and some 50,000 hectares for pineapple are worlds apart in terms of scale and use of mechanization.
But developing a hectare of bananas for planting costs half a million pesos and entails a 10-year wait to recoup the investment apart from heavy use of fertilizer and fungicides.
The local planters, some of them backed by Japanese trading houses such as Sumitomo, are contract growers for huge Western multinationals. A few operate their own ports and the industry employs on average 1.3 workers per hectare of farmland.
"Markets are opening up and everybody is expanding," said Floirendo's son, also named Antonio. "We need maybe close to a thousand hectares just to cover the additional demand."
His company is also planting an extra 1,500 hectares of pineapple in the Bukidnon plateau, where he said large areas of sugar cane farms are being replanted with bananas.
'Land reform failed'
He said there are "hundreds of thousands of hectares" of irrigated farm land on Mindanao that are optimal for bananas, but there are political as well as cultural constraints since most are in the mainly Muslim western side, which is torn by a separatist rebellion.
Communist rebels also pose an ever-present threat. They destroyed a refrigerated container truck in mid-April, and stole more than 100 firearms in a raid on the Davao Penal Colony last year.
The Philippines earlier this month banned the use of farmland for real estate.
There was no ban on shifting from rice to other crops, but the big planters want to be politically correct. "We can't move because of that," the younger Floirendo said.
In the early 1990s, the Hijo farm shrank by half to 760 hectares through land reform as the government moved to break apart the big farms to solve widespread landlessness that it blamed for the poverty of farm workers who make up a fifth of the country's labor force.
The company sued to compel the government to pay market rates for the expropriated land, but had to wait 10 years to win a court order.
The farm now has a mere 200 workers, and 300 hectares of what was left was redeveloped for tourism. The owners' 88-year-old colonial house fronting a 4.5-kilometre beachfront was transformed into a bed-and-breakfast hotel. Another 75 hectares went to export-oriented light industry.
But the Floreindos' 7,000-plus hectare farm, a joint venture with the government's Bureau of Corrections, was untouched.
Some 1,200 low-security inmates at the Davao prison do voluntary, non-sensitive farm work alongside thousands of ordinary workers. The prisoners' families are paid stipends equivalent to the minimum wage, and the government a guaranteed 28 million pesos annually.
"Land reform failed," the younger Floirendo said. "After they got the land, the beneficiaries turned around and either sold it or leased it back to somebody else until they lost their capital."
A 2007 study by GTZ, an arm of the German Ministry of Development Cooperation, conducted in April 2006 in conjunction with the Philippine government's Department of Agrarian Reform, agrees.
"At the macro level, the social and economic conditions in the rural communities are not any better than they were 10 years ago," said the study, called Scenarios and Options for Future Development.
Sison, the Hijo manager, said Mindanao "will still be the breadbasket of the Philippines. There is still a lot of farm land to develop".
However, conversion, for the owners, was "the best way to move forward".

Edjet Mabbayad and Jerry Mabutol, a pair of rookies representing FEU, took the first set against San Bedas Christian Aguila and Leonel Laraya, and took a commanding 20-15 lead in the second set.

But they dropped their guard, allowing their rivals to take the second set and force a deciding third. It was where the FEU pair, sensing big trouble, went back to work en route to a 21-19, 25-23, 15-9 win.

Electricity rates in Luzon areas might jump up by P1.00 per kilowatthour in September if the government fails to act on the rising cost of power in the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market .

A damaged National Transmission Company transformer in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan, which is causing supply problems, has been causing the jump in electricity rates in the WESM.

Meralco gets electricity from three sources: independent power producers with an average rate of around P5.00 per kWh, the National Power Corporation , which charges a little over P3.00/kWh and the spot market, which usually charges around P4.00/kWh.

However, because of the downed TransCo transformer, the price of electricity supplied by the spot market to the Manila Electric Company , the utility distributor in Metro Manila and Luzon, has risen from P4.00 to P18.00 per kWh.

This has led the Energy Regulatory Commission to mandate that Napocor rate should also apply to the spot market rate.

Because of the impending problem, Energy Secretary Angelo Reyes has ordered a meeting with all energy officials to discuss solutions to the problem. The government, however, has not promised that energy rates would not go up next month.

Meralco, meanwhile, expressed confidence that consumers would not be affected by the increasing WESM rates.

Philippine Electricity Spot Market Corp. president Lasse Holopainen earlier warned that the cost of electricity in the capital might rise by P1.00 next month if the problem is not solved immediately.

Meralco 6-mo profits up

Meralco, the country's largest power distributor, also announced Friday profits for the first six months of the year rose 5.8 percent helped by lower expenses and improved distribution revenues.

posted a net income of P2.48 billion in the six-month period compared to P2.34 billion in the same period in 2007.

Expenses dropped by 14.1 percent to P89.22 billion due to lower costs of purchased power, operations and maintenance and unrecoverable purchased power or system loss in excess of the 9.5 percent cap set by regulators.

Distribution revenues for the period went up from P12.74 billion to P12.85 billion. However, because of lower generation charges, total revenues fell 17 percent to P49.1 billion.

The company said skyrocketing fuel and commodity costs slowed down the demand for electricity during the period. It reported that energy sales grew by only 1.8 percent to 13,068 gigawatt-hours.

Meralco said sales to commercial customers continued to account for bulk of the total sales, increasing 4.4 percent to 5,051.49 kilowatt-hours . This was fueled by higher consumption of the real estate, trade and transport, and storage and communications sectors.

The industrial segment sales rose 2.6 percent to 3,710.20 kWh.

Sales to residential customers, however, contracted 1.9 percent to 4,236.92 kWh.

From January to June, Meralco spent P3.08 billion in capital expenditures, 14.7 percent lower than the P3.61 billion it earmarked in the same months last year. The decline in expenditures was partly due to gains from the appreciation of the peso. With reports from Alvin Elchico, ABS-CBN News and

How much health benefit you get from physical exercise might depend on your gender, and your race, new research suggests.The work is based on data from more than 15,000 middle-aged African American and Caucasian men and women who have been participating since the late 1980s in the large Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study.According to a report in the Journal of Lipid Research, people who added about an hour of mild exercise per week or half an hour of moderate exercise had increased levels of heart-healthy HDL.In the study, "mild exercise" included such activities as walking for pleasure, bowling, or weight lifting. "Moderate exercise" could have been a more strenuous activity such as basketball, hiking, or modern dance.The research team, led by Dr. Keri Monda at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, also found that increased exercise generally produced significant decreases in harmful triglycerides, but only in Caucasians.Similar beneficial effects of exercise on HDL cholesterol and triglycerides have been found in other studies.Monda's team also discovered, however, that increased activity improved levels of artery-clogging LDL cholesterol in women, but not in men. Also, they found, added exercise brought total cholesterol levels down, but only in Black women.These variations in response, the research team says, "are for the most part" new.What's behind these differences? MANILA - The central bank will focus on domestic economic developments and capital flows when it sets monetary policy, Gov. Amando Tetangco said on Thursday.
Tetangco was reacting to the US Federal Reserve's decision on Wednesday to leave interest rates unchanged. The Fed signalled it was in no hurry to raise rates, even though it voiced concern about inflation.

"We would continue to monitor the direction of short-term capital flows as well as other domestic developments to ensure that our inflation expectations are contained," Tetangco said in a text message to reporters.

Markets often expect the Philippine central bank to match US rate moves to maintain a yield gap, but the central bank is expected to raise borrowing costs again this year, possibly next month, because inflation hit a nine-year high of 9.6 percent in May.

Prices are expected to rise further and inflation may peak at 10-11 percent in the third quarter, Tetangco has said.

Earlier this month, the central bank raised rates by 25 basis points, the first increase in nearly three years.

The Fed has cut rates aggressively since last September to support the US economy, which has been hit by a crisis in the housing market and credit markets.

VATICAN CITY - Pope Benedict led the world's Catholics into Easter on Saturday at a Vatican service where he baptized a Muslim-born convert who is one of Italy's most famous and controversial journalists.
The German-born pontiff, marking the third Easter season of his pontificate, began the service in the atrium of a darkened St Peter's Basilica where he carved the Greek letters Alpha and Omega on a large candle.
The basilica became a sea of flickering flames as thousands of faithful inside lit candles before the lights were turned on in a ritual symbolizing the darkness in the world after Christ's death and the light of the resurrection.
Easter, the most important day in the Church's liturgical calendar, commemorates Christ rising from the dead three days after he was crucified.
In his sermon, Benedict wove a connection between the resurrection of Christ and the sacrament of baptism, the initiation rite of Christianity.
"...from the abyss of death he was able to rise to life. Now he raises us from death to true life. This is exactly what happens in baptism," the pope said.
The pope traditionally baptizes newborns on January 1 and adult converts to Catholicism on Easter eve.
One of the seven adults he baptized on Saturday night was Magdi Allam, 55, an Egyptian-born journalist who, as deputy director of the leading newspaper Corriere della Sera, is one of Italy's best-known intellectuals.
Allam, a fierce critic of Islamic extremism and a strong supporter of Israel, is protected by a police escort because of threats he has received.
WELL-KEPT SECRET
His conversion to Christianity was a well-kept secret, disclosed by the Vatican in a statement less than an hour before the Easter eve service started.
"For the Catholic Church, each person who asks to receive baptism after a deep personal search, a fully free choice and adequate preparation, has a right to receive it," it said.
Allam defended the pope in 2006 when the pontiff made a speech in Regensburg, Germany, that many Muslims perceived as depicting Islam as a violent faith.
The Vatican statement announcing Allam was joining Catholicism said all newcomers were "equally important before God's love and welcome in the community of the Church".
Allam, who has been living in Italy for 35 years, has said he was never a very devout Muslim. Still, his conversion to Christianity came as a surprise.
"What amazes me is the high profile the Vatican has given this conversion," Yaha Sergio Yahe Pallavicini, vice-president of the Italian Islamic Religious Community, told Reuters.
The Easter eve service was the first of three at which the pope presides. On Sunday he will celebrate a mass and then deliver his twice-yearly "Urbi et Orbi" blessing and message.
