On February 15th I wrote a piece about Yorkshire Street in the Westend of Morecambe. It had been ?smartened up and I had never been down it.

But now I have. I found where Cravens was, (famous for meat and potato pies.) Found Joshes /Joss' old shop. Ainsworth the greengrocers too. Not many shops left now. The florist, Heaths, has gone. The Chemist is still there though.

Lots of empty shops and to me it hasn't got the same atmosphere somehow. Maybe it will get it back. But it does look quite nice.

Photos included. Cravens.

One of my favourite streets has been ungraded. I haven't walked down it...

One of my favourite streets has been ungraded. I haven't walked down it since it was done. I will this summer.
Yes, Yorkshire Street.
It won't be the same now.

In the 50's and 60's and maybe later years it was full of all sorts of shops. It still will be I suppose. lol

At the top was Ainsworths, Mr Ainsworth sold vegetables and every Saturday it used to be really busy.
No deep freeze stores then. All fresh. I think he knew everyone even if not by name. Actually, I am not sure whether that shop was strictly on Yorkshire Street. Maybe it was just on the corner.

The next one I remember was Josh's or Joss's. He sold second hand stuff of all kinds. I never saw anyone go in but I suppose they must have done. The front window of the shop was really piled high with stuff. Josh could be seen stood at the door with his trusty bike nearby.

Over the road was Heaths, the florist. I am not sure whether it is still there now or not. I will look next time I go down.
I got my wedding flowers from Heaths, bridesmaid ones as well and of course, the bride's mother and bridegroom's mother's sprays. Also on behalf of my old fella, buttonholes. (He paid.)
A few years later started buying flowers for funerals, Mum being first.

I think there was a Dental Surgery, not sure. There was and maybe still is, a shoe shop which I think sold ballet shoes and things like that. An Art type shop near that.
We only bought plaster of paris after Christmas from there so we could mix the stuff to put into moulds. Anyone remember them?? I was rubbish, when they were set you could paint them, I was rubbish at that too.

Staying on the same side but further down the is a Chemist. Still is. I think before that there was a barber and still on the same side, a hairdresser, possibly still there but it won't be the same one.

On the other side of the street was a Homemade Sweet Shop. A fish shop. A Ladies underwear shop. On the corner there was an Electric Appliance shop. Just over the road, same side, a tobacconist shop.
(I will have to go down soon and see if some of these shops are still there.)

Who can forget Cravens? Cakeshop, cafe too. The best Meat and Potato pies in the world. Very upset I used to get if they had sold out and they very often did.
The clock hanging on the wall outside the shop used to tell us we were going to be late home and dad would NOT be happy.

Back to the other side, Kenneth Gardener's. I used to buy my vinyl '48's there. Kenneth Gardener had a few shops, two at least in Morecambe and I think 3 in Lancaster. Washing machines, fridges and freezers as well as the music shop.

I think there was a shop that sold ornaments and clocks.

Mr Whittaker had his Dental Practice over some of the shops. He was a lovely chap.

Wool shop then pet shop on the same side and after that, I forget now.

On the opposite side I think there was another cake shop, another green grocers and a butchers and on the corner and possibly on Regent Road, the Off Licence. I could be so wrong about that.

If you looked over the road, there was Andertons shoe shop. Just recently closed down, such a shame. Further along was Child and Longdens and further still, a Chemist and then I think a stationary shop. They were on Regent Road.

Regent Road was quite famous in its day for the only road in Morecambe to have traffic lights. True, on the corner of Westminster Road.

I could easily be corrected on where and when and also may have missed a lot of shops out. But for a narrow street you could buy all sorts.
The other street I loved was Euston Road. That also changed as did the surrounding houses. Loads pulled down.

But that was a long time ago now.

May I just say how sorry I am for Jade. I really hope a miracle happens for her and her family. God Bless love. x
