Scrounging for in-class activities, I've started playing songs for my students in order for them to practice pronunciation and generally expand their vocabularies. So far, we've listened to: "Suddenly I See," by the indomitable KT Tunstall; "Do You Realize," by the Flaming Lips; "Take Me Out," by Franz Ferdinand; and, finally, "Big, Big World," by none other than Emilia. That last one was a concession made to one of my more demanding classes, as they did not care for "Suddenly I See."Teaching a song does make you think a little harder about what its saying. It also makes you stretch as much as possible for some kind of meaning. For instance, here's what I came up with for "Take Me Out" (which I picked only because it was a fun rock song):It was a common belief in Europe up through the Elizabethan Era that when a person orgasmed, they lost a little bit of their "life energy." Subsequently, another way of saying "to orgasm" was "to die." Now. Looking at the lyrics ("So if you're lonely/You know I'm here waiting for you/I'm just a crosshair/I'm just a shot away from you/And if you leave here/You leave me broken, shattered, I lied/I'm just a crosshair/I'm just a shot, then we can die/I know I won't be leaving here with you"), I picture a guy standing at a bar in a disco, getting a drink and scoping out the ladies. He spots one and he beckons to her, telling her that he's here if she's lonely. He tells her he's a crosshair, a shot away from her, meaning (as I see it) that if she would just look at him she would see how close he is. He jokes a little about Romantic notions of love (being "broken" or "shattered" when you're love leaves) to this complete stranger. Then he says "I'm just a shot, then we can die." So here's where the Elizabethan "death" comes in (heh . . . comes in (hey-ohhhhhhhhh!)). He's saying point your guns at me, baby, and we can "die." Ohhhhhhh yeah . . .Now, not wanting to explain what an "orgasm" is to my students, who are possibly the most sexually naive people on the planet (they know nothing about sex, they aren't allowed to date in high school, they rarely date in college . . . when I even mention Christina in class, they all go "OooooOOOooh"--not unlike a studio audience watching Kelly Kapowski peck Zack Morris on the cheek), I told them instead that it was believed in Europe that you died a little bit when you fell in love. For my later classes I made up some BS about how your souls came together and it was your lonely soul that died and was reborn together with the soul of your love. Whatever. So "Take Me Out" became not a song about some dude trying to get laid, but a man searching for love . . . at a dance club. He's not confident ("I know I won't be leaving her with you") but he's persistent (why the lyrics repeat so much in the second part of the song). Thus, the "take me out" of the song becomes both: "Take me out on a date" and take me out--as in, kill me--so we can fall in love (or . . . have orgasms, whichever you want to believe). So all of this was fine until I wrote out the lyrics to "Big, Big World," which, by the by, is, like, one of the vaguest songs about love ever. I hit a bit of a snag on the chorus. "But I do, do feel that I do, do will miss you much." I do will miss you much? Nevermind the "do will" part. Is "miss you much" right? I guess you can miss a person very much . . . "I miss you very much" . . . That's grammatical, right? But to just miss someone much? . . . They all knew the song, which didn't help. How do you tell a group of students that they're learning a song that doesn't use standard grammar and break their spoony little hearts? Well, I could not.So now I'm lying to my students about European beliefs and teaching them non-standard grammar. I am clearly the greatest teacher alive!

A smelly rotten-egg gas in farts controls blood pressure in mice, a new study finds. The unpleasant aroma of the gas, called hydrogen sulfide (H2S), can be a little too familiar, as it is expelled by bacteria living in the human colon and eventually makes its way, well, out.The new research found that cells lining mice’s blood vessels naturally make the gas and this action can help keep the rodents’ blood pressure low by relaxing the blood vessels to prevent hypertension (high blood pressure). This gas is “no doubt” produced in cells lining human blood vessels too, the researchers said. “Now that we know hydrogen sulfide’s role in regulating blood pressure, it may be possible to design drug therapies that enhance its formation as an alternative to the current methods of treatment for hypertension,” said Johns Hopkins neuroscientist Solomon H. Snyder, M.D., a co-author of the study detailed in the Oct. 24th issue of the journal Science. more...

Teenager Sam Holt's behaviour would leave most parents in despair - drinking, smoking, taking drugs and having sex.But the 13-year-old's mother thinks it is 'sweet' rather than shocking. Tracy Holt even rewards her daughter with cigarettes on the rare occasions when she does behave. Miss Holt, 43, knows Sam drinks but is just relieved that it's not more than a couple of cans of lager a night. And she decided not to get angry about her daughter losing her virginity at 12, instead insisting that Sam uses contraception. Miss Holt, a jobless single mother with two other adult children, told Closer magazine: 'I don't see the point in punishing her.'If I ground her, I'm just punishing myself because I have to put up with her in the house. Instead, I reward her good behaviour by giving her cigarettes. If she's bad, she goes without.'She's a little comedian. I let her get away with a lot of cheek. It's sweet.' Giving out cigarettes as a reward 'works', she insisted.Miss Holt said: 'There are a lot worse things she could be doing. 'We've all got to die sometime. I haven't got cancer from smoking so she'll probably be all right anyway.' more...

Former US Air Force fighter pilot Milton Torres is convinced he had an encounter with an alien spaceship in the skies over England in the 1950s.He was warned to keep quiet about the incident, but eventually talked about it 31 years later, the newly-released Ministry of Defence files show.On the night of May 20 1957, Dr Torres, then aged 25, was on standby at RAF Manston in Kent when he received an urgent order to scramble. He was told to intercept a UFO with "very unusual flight patterns" over East Anglia that ground radar operators had been tracking for some time.It was so cloudy he could not see anything, but the object showed up clearly on his radar as similar in size to a B-52 bomber. He was then ordered to fire a full salvo of 24 rockets at the object - something that came as a sobering shock to him. But before he could carry out this instruction the UFO suddenly darted off and disappeared from his scope in a matter of seconds. The next day a man claiming to be from the US National Security Agency threatened him with losing his flying status if he told anyone what happened. Dr Torres, now 77 and living in Miami, Florida, said he was flying at about Mach 0.92, while the UFO was travelling at over Mach 10 (1 mach = speed of sound / 1,225 km per hour).more...

Plants are an integral part of our society. They provide the vital oxygen during photosynthesis, but mankind has always has taken a callous approach towards these live-giving members. Researchers of Chonnam National University have developed a robotic plant that has humidifying, oxygen-producing, aroma-emitting, and kinetic functions. It measures 130 cm tall and 40 cm in diameter and consists of a pot, a stem, and five buds of a flower. The plant can also respond to stimulus. When you come within the 40 cm radius of the flower, the sonic sensors respond by bending the stem towards you and the bud blooms. When left alone, the plant retrieves to the original state. If a person's voice becomes louder than a certain level, the flower buds will come into bloom, and the stem shakes slightly to suggest a greeting. When the room lights up, the buds open and close, and when music is played, the plant dances.

Dressed in ancient mariner's clothes, Josh, a maritime history fan, did not even get his feet wet as he cruised among the yachts and the ferries crossing the harbour.Once filming has been finished Josh plans to auction the boat for charity.

Are new conceptual questions such as, "What does the Constitution do?" more difficult than old queries like "What is the Constitution?"Is a question with a range of acceptable answers, such as the new "What is one reason colonists came to America?" preferable to the old "Why did the Pilgrims come to America?"Many preferred the new test, which the government says includes more meaningful questions, such as those that involve a concept of, or critical thinking about, civics or history. The new civics list, a pool of 100 possible questions for a test of up to 10, omits the old "How many stars are there on our flag?" and "Name the amendments that guarantee or address voting rights." Taking their place are questions like: "There are four amendments to the Constitution about who can vote. As the economic might of Japan faces up to the global banking crisis, a single cat has boosted the finances of a small Japanese city by millions of dollars, according to a study. It is rather Tama's irresistible charm which has brought tourists flocking in their thousands to the western city of Kinokawa to see the feline worker patrolling in the uniform of her office - a Wakayama Electric Railway cap. With 55,000 more people having used the Kishigawa Line than would normally be expected, Tama's contribution to the local economy is calculated to have reached as much as Y1.1 billion ($A13.5 million) in 2007 alone, according to a study announced last week.Katsuhiro Miyamoto, a professor at Kansai University's School of Accountancy, said picture books and other merchandise featuring the feline stationmaster also produced significant economic effects.A television appearance and other publicity surrounding Tama - who receives cat food in lieu of a salary - was worth Y280 million ($A3.4 million), according to Miyamoto. Tama was born from a stray cat brought to the station by a cleaner and kept by Toshiko Koyama, a local who runs a grocery store next door. The station went unmanned in April 2006 as the line was losing money. But Tama turned this around. She rose to national stardom in January 2007 as the railway company formally appointed her as "stationmaster".

A 28-year-old Russian female, who visited Dubai on a tourist visa, and a 30-year-old male citizen of Lebanon, a salesman in a local store, were put on trial for drinking juice in a public place in the daytime during Muslim fasting. The police caught the two people red-handed at a gas station in Dubai, Emirat.ru reports with reference to Gulf News.In accordance with the Federal Penal Code of the United Arab Emirates, a public intake of food and beverages during daytime hours of the month of Ramadan is forbidden by Article 313. The article stipulates the punishment in the form of either a monetary penalty – up to 2,000 dirhems ($555) – or even a term of up to one month in prison. The young people told the court that they were not Muslims and were thus unaware of the fact that their actions could be punishable. The court took the mitigating circumstances into consideration, but found the defendants guilty, since ignorance did not exclude responsibility. The court ruled that the young people must pay the fine of 1,000 dirhems ($278) each. The case became the first one in Dubai in violation of Article 313 since the beginning of the month of Ramadan on September 1.Thousands of foreigners from Europe and Asia reside in the emirate of Dubai, the major tourist center of the Persian Gulf . Dubai is known as a relatively liberal region in comparison with other territories of the UAE. Tourists can be seen in the streets wearing shorts, whereas alcoholic beverages can often be available in bars and hotels. This year, however, the authorities intend to remind all residents and guests of the emirate that they are staying on the territory of a Muslim country. There have been quite a number of incidents recently when the local police in plain clothes arrested women sunbathing topless, nudists and other violators of public order.

Along with wild salmon and steelhead trout, the Pacific Northwest soon may have another endangered species — the driveway carwash.Washing your car or boat in the driveway or street is a residential ritual as American as backyard barbecues. But the state of Washington is telling its local governments they must prohibit home car washing unless residents divert the wash water away from storm drains, where they say it causes water pollution. Unlike public sanitary sewer systems that clean wastes from water, storm drain systems in most communities empty straight into streams and eventually rivers and oceans."Clearly you cannot dump your bucket of wash water, or as you are hosing down your car, you're not supposed to allow that into a storm drain," says Kim Schmanke, spokeswoman for the department. Washington state environmental officials insist they aren't banning home car washing — just the runoff into storm drains, Moore and Schmanke say. They say residents will still be able to wash cars on lawns or gravel driveways where water will soak in the ground. Residents can wash on pavement if they install barriers to prevent wash water from going into storm sewers.more...

Police worried about the video questioned him on Monday but took no action because he had the appropriate gun licence. Just 24 hours later, Saari entered the hall in Finland with an automatic weapon and explosive devices which were used to start a fire.He killed ten, burning some of the bodies beyond recognition. Two others were injured. If we could shrink the earth's population to a village of precisely 100 people, with all the exsting human ratios remaining the same, it would look something like the following:There would be:57 Asians21 Europeans10 from the Western Hemisphere, both north and south8 Africans52 would be female48 would be male70 would be non-while30 would be whitewould be non-christian30 would be Christian89 would be heterosexual11 would be homosexual6 people would possess 59％ of the entire world's wealthand all 6 would be from the United States.80 would live in substandard housing70 would be unable to read50 would suffer from malnutrition1 would be near death; 1 would be near birth1(yes, only 1) would have a college education１ would own a computerWhen one considers our world from such a compressed perspective, the need for acceptance, understanding and education becomes glaringly apparent. The following is also something to ponder...If you woke pup this morning with more health than illness...you are more blessed than the illion who will not survive this week.If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation...you are ahead of 500 million people in the world. If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep... you are richer than 75％ of this world. If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in dish someplace...you are among the top 8％ of the world's wealth. If your parents are still alive and still married...you are very rare, even in the United Stated and Canada.Someone once said: What goes around comes around.So...Work live you don't need the money.Love like you've never been hurt.Dance like nobody's watching.Sing like nobody's listening.Live like it's Heaven on Earth

Meet the Aye-Aye, the animals many believe to be the ugliest on the planet. Unfortunately for this creature, it is also one of the most endangered. It is one of those animals that always gets on to top ten lists of the world's ugliest creatures and sure enough, this native of Madagascar is unlikely to win any beauty contests. It is incredibly rare and becoming even more so for a number of reasons. It is the sole member of its genus family, Daubentoniidae, although there seems to have been another species as recently as one thousand years ago.Unfortunately, the Aye-Aye is viewed with great superstition by the indigenous inhabitants of Madagascar and is often killed on sight. There are very few breeding programs of the Aye-Aye in the world. Most successful among the few, however, is the Duke Lemur Center in the USA which has twenty two and there are several programs in the United Kingdom. However, there is no real idea how many Aye-Aye's still exist in the wild and it is considered highly endangered as a species, with a pessimistic forecast predicted for its survival in its indigenous surroundings.

The Space Shuttle Atlantis is scheduled to launch next month (October 8th), carrying new instruments, batteries and gyroscopes to the Hubble Space Telescope. This will be the final servicing mission to Hubble, the 30th flight of the 23-year old Atlantis, and one of the final 10 flights of the Space Shuttle program, which will be retired in 2010. Even though Shuttle launches may seem to have become commonplace, their preparation and execution is still a months-long process, requiring the work and diligence of thousands to make sure the aging, complex systems are all in perfect condition for launch. Here are some photos of the ongoing preparations for the launch of this mission, STS-125, some of the people involved in making it work, and the crew, who will assume the risks to help keep Hubble alive.see more pictures...

Belt-driven bikes, which were introduced by boutique bike makers a couple of years ago, are just starting to hit the mainstream. Trek has introduced two new urban bikes for 2009 with belt drives rather than chains, and they look pretty sweet. The benefit to a belt drive system over a chain and shifters system is that it won't stretch and break over time like a chain, weighs significantly less, stays clean (and keeps your cuffs clean) and is quiet. The downside? It's more expensive. The two bikes Trek has unveiled, the District and the Soho, will run you $930 and $990, respectively. But as with all new tech, the prices are always highest right when it starts hitting the mainstream. Look for bikes with belt drives to start coming from many more big bike companies for much less in the coming years.

We are not all made to be so perfect. We commit mistakes and we tend to keep...

We are not all made to be so perfect. We commit mistakes and we tend to keep doing them. But being a not-so-perfect person is not an excuse for all your wrongdoings. You should realize that you can stop those bad things if you yourself is willing to stop them. The only way to do that is to change. You are strong if you had the power to change. Why?First, only few people can control themselves from doing this and that. The rest, they can’t control themselves leading to crimes that bring consequences to them. They are the real cause of the bad things happening in their lives.Secondly, it’s not easy for someone to change in a short period of time. Changes take place in a long time. Within that long time, there were tendencies that influences may remind you of the things you want to change and do it again. Therefore, the long wait of changing yourself becomes very useless. But if you’re really determined to do it, you can overcome the obstacles you will face. You can now go to the finish line you’d ever wanted.Lastly, many people wouldn’t want to give seats for chances to change. Meaning, many people are not allowing those chances to enter their lives. Does it mean that they do not want to change?Hence, changing takes time to happen. It may not be as easy as you thought but it will be a great help in making your life worthy. It is also a matter of who the beholder is. If you don’t allow the changes into your life, your life can be miserable someday.

11,000-year-old painting surprisingly modernist in styleDAMASCUS -- French archeologists have discovered an 11,000-year-old wall painting underground in northern Syria that they believe is the oldest in the world. The two square-metre painting, in red, black and white, was found at the neolithic settlement of Djade al-Mughara on the Euphrates, northeast of the city of Aleppo, team leader Eric Coqueugniot told Reuters."It looks like a modernist painting. Some of those who saw it have likened it to work by (Paul) Klee. Through carbon dating we established it is from around 9,000 BC," Coqueugniot said.Mustafa Ali, a leading Syrian artist, said similar geometric design to that in the Djade al-Mughara painting found its way into art throughout the Levant and Persia, and can even be seen in carpets and kilims (rugs)."We must not lose sight that the painting is archeological, but in a way it's also modern," he said.France is an important contributor to excavation efforts in Syria, where 120 teams are at work.
Acne-Skin-Care-ProductsB-Vitamin-Hype-With-Ambitions-of-Fighting-Acne-Rosacea-and-Tumors-What-Can-This-Vitamin-Really-Do-For-YouWhat-Is-Acne--A-Brief-Users-Guide-For-Parents-Teens-And-The-Rest-Of-Us
Syria was at the crossroads of the ancient world and has thousands of mostly unexcavated archeological sites.

Wooaahh!!! Now that's what's called an India-Pakistan match! Till the last ball it was not sure who would win. 6 runs from 4 balls was what it was stuck at... and it seemed India would loose for sure (looking at Misbah's great innings). Misbah tried to play a great shot but unfortunately lacked the energy... and drove the ball into Shreesanth's hands.

That was the most exciting match one would have witnessed for a long time now. It also marked the perfect end to the World Cup. Both the teams put up as world champions with India stealing the Cup by the breadth of a hair.

Ok now thats a really relaxing news. 'India can beat Australia' is now a fact. Wonderful batting by Yuvraj Singh once again. He pulled 70 of 30 balls. Shreesanth was the baller of the day. Managed to keep the runs low and took important wickets. Ok maybe i m reporting what the news sites already speak...

Let's get ready for our head-on with Pakistan for the World Twenty20 finals. The two tough teams that made an early exit in WorldCup 2007 end up in the finals of Twenty20. So far so good...

I don’t smoke. But today, i felt a need to. The weather was extremely nice, i was just looking through the window and smoking a cigarette. I turned the music loud...very loud. Listening to some lyrics telling “Some poeple live for the fortune, some people live just for the pain, some people live for the power...some poeple live just to play the game...”. I whispered then to the cigarette: i’m here...you are there. Here is morning, somewhere is night. Some poeple are working, while others are sleeping. I’m bored, some poeple are having fun. Some people are crying, while other are laughing. I’m tired, others may be excited. I’m at home, some are homeless. I’m in good health, others are disabled. Some of you may have birthday party, others may have funeral. Some of you are flying in the sky on a plane, others are underground, in a subway. U may be stuck in traffic, others may be speeding on highway. Some of you may be making love, others may dream and make fantasy of it. Some of you may be singing, while others are just listening. I may be writing, while some are just reading. Some poeple are living in war, others are enjoying peace. Some may be naked, others may be dressed. The cigarette was about to finish while the list has been too long yet. But it didn’t stop me to think more... in the following minutes, i displayed all the eventual situations of all people in the world right on that moment. It is strange, but weired is what make us different...Strange world, strange life...

So as i thought, Italy beat France to become the World Champions! That was a perfect match, anyone could think for a World Cup Final!

First, France got the lead, with the help of Zidane, only in the seventh minute of the game! but the Italians were not behind, they levelled the score just ten minutes later. On seeing the score 1-1 tied just after 17 minutes of the game, i thought its gonna be a high scoring match, but the remaining time was filled with attacking, defending, tackling, falling, bruising, (Some HeadButting...) but no goal was scored even in the extra time and another match was stretched to the penalty shoot-outs!

Now, after seeing Zidane going out on using his head (as a missile, not for thinking!) it was almost a dreaded task for France to win, at that point of time, i was beginning to see Italy as the Champions then! And the same happened!
Italians kept their cool and beat the French men 5-3 in penalties.

Frankly I wasnt expecting that kind of behaviour by Zidane. This is your last match and you are doing that kinda things, one should expect from a rookie!

So another World Cup came to an end, will look forward to English Premier League now which is coming in august :)

REY!

So, we see a lot of surprise results lately in the FIFA World Cup!

First, Brazil, the biggest of them all, lost to France, thanx to Zidane. That is acceptable, but Portugal beating England is completely surprising, i mean didnt they know how to kick the ball during penalty shoot-outs?? They missed 3 out of 5 penalty kicks, horrible!

And now Italy beat Germany in the extra time! But in that match, Germany was ill fated, they got many chances which can be turned into goals but they missed out somewhere! Ballack and Klose almost got their team lead, but they just missed out, the Italian defence was great.

Anyway, Lets see what happen in todays match - Portugal vs France.
I wont be surprised if Portugal beats the French men, but my bet will be on France!

REY!

russians are supporting america and free world's enemies again, first nukes for iran, then missiles for syria, now invitation for hamas. hamas didn't kill russians so mr putin never considered it a terror organization, our friend in kremlin is just brilliant. hey mr putin, what do you say if rest of the world all support chechnya rebels? they didn't murder my people so they are freedom fighters, not terrorists, right?
